Comment
I
wanted to officially welcome everyone in
North America to the spring season. With the
winter behind us and the new rental order
being delivered, it is important to remember a few
things around our operation:
• Safety is a top priority for our Employees and Customers.
• In-Service new units as soon as possible and if you have problems with
licensing, please escalate to your RM immediately.
• Monitor all No Longer Earning units- this should be a review with the SM and
your RM to get units to work.
• Make sure all locations are stocked with water bottles and all refrigerators are
customer facing.
• Help all customers to the video boards to explain how to use the rental unitsnew
automatic transmission video and reefer video.
• Verify all contact information is correct in the agreement on all transactions.
• All new customers must be called to verify the driver is authorized to pick up
unit.
Thank you for a great 1st Quarter and looking forward to much success for
the remainder of the year.
In order to keep our clients fully informed of all potential costs around purchasing our services we will be starting a new
automated communication. This communication will inform our valued clients of their liability if they have rented an
IFTA liable unit and have not submitted adequate fuel receipts. The trigger for this automated e-mail will be the close out
of a contract. This communication coupled with our centralized efforts to collect fuel receipts , trip records and Rydesmart data
is intended to reduce financial exposure to both Ryder and our valued clients.
Please keep in mind as you discuss this with your clients that from a convenience and liability stand point the best scenario
is to get our clients on 100% Ryder fuel when appropriate and coupled with our Rydesmart devices we can make this very
seamless. So, like many situations selling more products is always a good thing. I know this goes against everything we have
done for 20 years, but now is the time to have the conversation and inform our customers.
Mississippi - State Spotlight
Melany Hennington, Sean Russell, Phillip Moix
Mississippi is located in the southeastern region of the United States. It encompasses over 48,000 square miles that include
the beaches of the Gulf Coast, the flatlands of the Delta, and the hills of the northern portion of the state. Approximately 2.9
million people call the Magnolia State home.
Mississippi’s Gulf Coast region is a popular tourist destination because of its numerous casinos and white sandy beaches. The Gulf
Coast has 26 miles of beautiful coastal beaches, which have barrier islands scattered along the coast. In addition to its eleven casinos, the
Gulf Coast also has twenty-two golf courses that tourists and residents enjoy. The Mississippi Gulf Coast also features a wide variety of
fishing. There are freshwater, brackish water, and saltwater fishing areas to choose from. Fishing enthusiasts have the option of inshore
fishing, pier fishing, and deep sea fishing.
The last masonry coastal fortification built in the United States is located on a barrier island on the Gulf Coast. Fort Massachusetts sits
on West Ship Island which is twelve miles from the coast. Fort Massachusetts is now a tourist attraction for visitors that go on the Ship
Island Excursion. Ship Island was originally a single island but was split into two islands by Hurricane Camille’s tidal surge in 1969.
The Mississippi Gulf Coast is also home to the Stennis Space Center and Keesler Air Force Base. Stennis Space Center is located on the
western portion of the Mississippi Gulf Coast. This facility is the largest rocket engine testing facility that NASA curretly has operating.
Keesler Air Force base is located in Biloxi, MS. The base is home to the Second Air Force and the 81st Training Wing of the Air Education
and Training Command.
Hattiesburg
Hattiesburg, also known as “The Hub City,” is the home to The University of Southern Missisissippi. Southern Miss was founded in 1910
as a teacher-training college with an enrollment of 876 students. In the years since that time, the University has greatly expanded and
now boasts a student body population of over 15,000. The football program has claimed two national titles and eight conference titles.
Brett Farve is the most notable football player to come from Southern Miss. Favre went on to play for the Green Bay Packers and the
Minnesota Vikings. After playing in the NFL for ninteen years Favre retired to Hattiesburg, MS where he helps coach a local high school
football team.
Hattiesburg is also home of the largest National Guard training base east of the Mississippi River. Camp Shelby, which was established
in 1917. The base covers 136,000 acres. The facitlity was established during World War I.
Jackson
Jackson is the capital and is also the largest city in the state. The Jackson metro area has a population of around 540,000 residents in five
counties. Industries in the area include automotive manufacturing, food, electrical machinery and equipment, and agriculture.
Jackson is home to several colleges and universities including the University of Mississippi Medical Center and Jackson State University.
The world’s first heart and lung transplants were performed at UMMC as well as the first kidney auto-transplant. One of JSU’s most
notable alumni was Walter Payton, who set multiple NFL records as a running back for the Chicago Bears in the late 1970s and early
1980s. The campus recreation center is named for him.
Like the rest of the state, the Jackson metro area has made and
continues to make its contributions to the arts. Jackson is home to
the International Ballet Competition, which takes place every four
years in Jackson’s Thalia Mara Hall. Jackson was Pulitzer Prize
and Presidential Medal of Freedom winner Eudora Welty’s life-long
home. Richard Wright, winner of several literary awards, spent
much of his childhood in Jackson. Jackson is also home to Malaco
Records and has produced many well- known musicians.
The Delta
The area of Mississippi commonly referred to as the Delta lies
between the Yazoo and Mississippi rivers. Author David L. Cohn
once said that the Delta “begins in the lobby of the Peabody Hotel
in Memphis and ends on Catfish Row in Vicksburg”. However you
define it, the Delta is best known for agriculture, appliances, and,
more interestingly, as the birthplace of the blues.
The Mississippi Delta is home of “the crossroads” where, according
to legend, renowned Mississippi blues man Robert Johnson sold
his soul to the devil in exchange for the ability to play guitar.
The “King of the Blues”, the late great B. B. King was also born
and raised in the Delta. King is credited with bringing the blues
from the Delta to a wider, more mainstream audience. He was
awarded many honors during his nearly 70 year career including 15
Grammy awards and the Presidential Medal of Freedom. The B.B.
King Museum and Delta Interpretive Center is located in King’s
hometown of Indianola and is where King will be buried this
month. The Delta produced many other well- known blues artists
such as Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, Pinetop Perkins, and
David Honeyboy Edwards, just to name a few.
North Mississippi/Tupelo
The northern part of the state is home to two major universities, the
University of Mississippi and Mississippi State University.
The University of Mississippi, also known as Ole Miss, is located
in Oxford. New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning and his
father, former New Orleans Saints quarterback Archie Manning,
are both Ole Miss graduates. Author John Grisham is a graduate
of the University of Mississippi Law School and is still a part time
resident of Oxford. Nobel Prize laureate William Faulkner briefly
attended the university and called Oxford home for most of his life.
The university owns Faulkner’s home, Rowan Oak, which is now a
museum.
Mississippi State University is located in Starkville. It is the largest
university in the state. A number of MSU athletes have gone on
to the pros. Notable alumni include long time senator John C.
Stennis, for whom Stennis Space Center is named and Hartley
Peavey, founder of Peavey Electronics which is located in Meridian,
MS. Author John Grisham received his undergraduate degree from
MSU.
No discussion of north Mississippi would be complete without
mentioning its most famous son, the “King of Rock n Roll”, Elvis
Presley. Presley was born in Tupelo in 1935 and lived there until
moving to Memphis at the age of 13. The shotgun house where he
was born is now a museum toured by thousands of devoted fans
every year.
Heat Hazards, The Dangers of Hot Environments
Joe Vanleunen – Safety and Loss Prevention Manager
A
hot job, a hot day and high humidity – it all adds up
to heat stress. Too much heat stress can lead to a heat
illness, the body’s way of saying it can’t take the heat.
There are several types of heat disorders – heatstroke, heat
exhaustion, heat cramps, heat collapse (fainting), heat rashes, and
heat fatigue. They can occur separately or in combination.
When the Body Loses Salt, Cramps Occur
Heat cramps are painful muscle spasms. The arms, legs and abdomen
are usually affected first, but any muscle is susceptible. Heat
cramps strike those who sweat profusely and drink a lot of water
but fail to replace body salt lost through sweating. Low salt content
in the muscles causes painful cramping during or after activity.
2015 Blitz Recap
The Blitz Recap Form is ready on RIDE. We still have some BU’s that are not sharing their success.
Please make sure that you go on RIDE and fill out your blitz activity each month.
RAM’s must have their recap entered by the 25th day of the month
RIDE —Rental Folder —RAM Tool Box —Rental Blitz Recap – new
The Blitz Recap Summary, seen below is also now available on RIDE
Other factors can contribute to or provoke heat stress include age,
weight, degree of physical fitness, medical conditions, prior heat
conditions, and even types of clothing.
Heatstroke Happens When Sweating Stops
Heatstroke occurs when the body’s heat-regulating system
breaks down under stress and sweating stops. There may be
little warning, and it is a medical emergency. A heatstroke victim
usually has red or spotted skin, lack of sweating and a high
body temperature. The victim may also suffer from confusion,
convulsions or delirium before losing consciousness. Unless the
victim receives treatment, death can occur.
If you encounter someone suffering from heat stroke, call an
ambulance and move the victim to a cool place. Thoroughly soak
the person’s clothing with cool water (do not add ice). When the
victim’s temperature has dropped, dry him or her off. If body
temperature rises again, repeat the cooling process.
Heat Exhaustion Occurs With Fluid Loss
Heat exhaustion develops when the body loses more fluid through
sweating than is taken in by drinking water. A victim of heat
exhaustion sweats profusely but becomes extremely weak or giddy.
In more serious cases, the victim may vomit or faint. The skin
becomes clammy and the complexion pale, but body temperature
stays fairly normal.
To treat a victim of heat exhaustion, have the person sip water for
about an hour while laying down. Loosen any clothing and raise
the victim’s feet 8 to 12 inches. Then, apply cool, wet cloths and
fan the victim. If vomiting occurs, discontinue fluids and take the
person to the hospital where an intravenous solution can be given.
Tips To Beat The Heat
The best way to fight heat illness is to
prevent it. Here are some tips to help you
through the hot times on and off the job:
• Drink lots of water. Sweating is one way
your body cools itself. Since sweating
results in water loss, the only way to
replace the water is to drink more of
it. Drink at least eight ounces of water
every 20-30 minutes while working in a
hot environment.
• Avoid alcohol and carbonated drinks,
which can cause cramps.
• Choose proper clothing. Light weight
and light colors are typically best.
• Watch out for others to promptly
identify any symptoms of heat related
illnesses.
Communicating in Today’s Business Environment
Dan Johnson, Field Asset Manager - South East Region
Did you know that minority purchasing power from 2000 to 2045 is projected to grow
from 1 Trillion to 5 Trillion dollars? The question is how Ryder can capture some of
this market?
Ryder Vehicle Sales is building Customer Loyalty in a global market with customers whose
primary language is not English. In 2014, RVS partnered with Language Select, a company that
provides translating services in over 200 languages which allows our sales team to speak the
customers language thru a translator. By being able to speak the customer’s language, RVS has
been able to sell trucks to customers that otherwise we would not have been able to communicate
with.
“If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you
talk to him in his language, that goes to his heart” ~ Nelson Mandela
While you may speak a second language, one person cannot speak over 200 different languages alone. Now with the use of Language
Select you can. The VSM’s that attended the sales meeting had the opportunity to see how easy it was to use the service.
If you are in a market where there are multiple languages spoken, Language Select is your answer to penetrating untapped potential.
Customer and prospects want to do business in local markets and communicate in a language they are comfortable speaking. With the
ever so changing diverse business climate, choosing Language Select as our business partner has allowed us to reach customers that we
otherwise would not have been able to communicate with.
Ryder advertises on the RVS website that we have the ability to communicate in more than 200 languages, something our competitors are
not able to do. This would be another differentiator on why to do business with Ryder, a company that reaches out to those of all languages.
National Rental Spotlight
The majority of our national rental customers have seasonal rental needs so it’s important that we anticipate when their peak season is
and reach out to these customers and encourage them to place their rental reservations early. Some of the industries that have seasonal
needs are construction, agricultural, food & beverage, fireworks and delivery/courier. If you have a National Rental customer in one of
these industries that rents, please reach out to other National Rental customers that are in that same industry to ask if they have a need as
well (if PepsiCo is renting, reach out to Coca-Cola, etc…) If your customers are hesitant to place a reservation, remind them that we are
anticipating high rental utilization and we want to assure a vehicle will be available for them.
Current National Rental customers and their peak season:
PepsiCo (New Bern, Frito-Lay, Tropicana, Naked Juice)—Memorial
Day through Labor Day
Edible Arrangements—Valentine’s Day
1-800-Flowers—Valentine’s Day
Honey Baked Ham—Easter
Party City—Summer
Superior Service is the Goal
I wish Don and Mike could solve all of my life’s
problems as quickly and efficiently as they solve any
problems I have regarding truck rentals.
I was in need of a van for an important business event and
Ryder, and more specifically; Robert@ The Rohnert Park
branch came through! I was treated as a valued customer and
found this lacking at times with other well known name
rental companies. I will be a customer again thanks to the
professional attitude and customer skills from Robert and
Ryder
service!
Customer service is exceptionally important to our business. We want to make sure that our customers have the best
experience when renting from us. Asking the question, “Was there anything we could have done better?” at the end of
every rental gives us an opportunity to ensure that we have done everything in our power to give our customers the best
experience. CSI is a huge focus for us this year. Let’s make sure that we are making our follow up calls and also getting
our customers to tell us about their experience by taking the survey. We can learn a lot from our customers, and in turn,
give them the best service possible.
Please don’t hesitate to contact the marketing team for more information on our CSI campaign.
