M. Celeste Simon, Ph.D., is an expert in vascular biology and angiogenesis.
Her lab focuses on how oxygen regulates cancer progression.
To turn our scientific breakthroughs into innovative treatments as quickly as possible, our researchers
and physicians work in comprehensive teams based on disease. Basic scientists, surgeons, medical
oncologists — they all work together on the complex steps of turning discoveries into treatments that
will benefit cancer patients throughout the world.
National leaders in basic research such as Drs. Lewis Chodosh, James Alwine, Brian Keith and
others lead our efforts in cell death, tumor microenvironment and other areas of biology to better
understand cancer.
Researchers at the Abramson Family Cancer Research Institute are testing a simple peptide vaccine
in advanced breast cancer patients. They hope to expand the use to prevent reccurrence in patients
treated for early-stage cancer at the Rena Rowan Breast Center and beyond. Other collaborations at
the Abramson Cancer Center focus on regenerative medicine through gene and cell-based therapies,
particularly stem cells. One team hopes to identify how oxygen regulates stem cell and tumor growth.
A genetics investigator recently published findings identifying a gene that leads to the loss of both
stem cells and DNA repair genes.
Garrett M. Brodeur, M.D., leads the pediatric oncology research program and focuses
on understanding and creating targeted therapies for neuroblastoma, the fourth most common
malignancy in children.
Roger Greenberg, M.D., Ph.D., was recently recruited to the Abramson Family Cancer Research
Institute, where his research focuses on the genetics of breast and ovarian cancers.
At the Abramson Cancer Center, our commitment
to patients extends to helping them understand,
address and control the medical and psychosocial
effects of a cancer diagnosis and treatment.
In January 2007, we joined the select company of only
six other cancer centers as part of Lance Armstrong
Foundation’s LIVESTRONG Survivorship Center of
Excellence Network. Started by a grant from the foundation
in 2000, our renowned program works in conjunction with
three of our network community hospitals to meet the needs
of diverse community members. The program coordinators
work to address medical, personal, social and economic
concerns as well as to develop strategies for maintaining long-term health. We recently
expanded our award-winning Website OncoLinkTM — the first program of its kind — to launch
OncoLifeTM . OncoLifeTM provides individual comprehensive plans for survivorship care.
Penn also leads the way in research that allows patients to survive cancer with a high quality
of life. Our bone marrow and stem cell transplant program turned myeloma into a chronic,
rather than fatal, disease by pioneering treatments minimizing the use of chemotherapy.
Joseph Carver, M.D., chief of staff at the Abramson Cancer Center, has won national recognition for his expertise
in the treatment of cardiac disease during and following cancer therapy.
David L. Porter, M.D., broke new ground in the field of “mini-transplants” for blood cancer
patients. Mini-transplants lead to fewer side effects for survivors and require lower
doses of chemotherapy or radiation.
Katherine Staub, R.N., met Dr. Porter during her son’s experience with leukemia.
Inspired by the compassion of her son’s medical team, she became a nurse and now
works on the same floor where her son was treated.

PENN Medicine is beginning construction of the Roberts Proton Therapy Center – the world’s first fully integrated
proton therapy facility. The Roberts Proton Therapy Center is named in honor of Ralph J. and Suzanne Roberts
and Brian L. and Aileen Roberts, who generously pledged $15 million to help create this facility that will treat up
to 3,000 patients a year. Ralph J. Roberts and his son, Brian L. Roberts are both University of Pennsylvania alumni.

“Suzanne and I are delighted to have the opportunity to give back to these two communities that have meant so

STEPHEN M. HAHN, M.D.
As a radiation and medical oncologist, as well as an NIH-funded researcher, Stephen
M. Hahn, M.D., brings his many skills and talents to lead one of the nation’s
foremost academic radiation oncology departments. As Chairman,
and previously Vice Chair for Research for the Department
of Radiation Oncology, Hahn has led the expansion of the
department’s research base, which has consistently ranked
first or second in NIH funding. Penn’s Abramson Cancer
Center is dedicated to comprehensive care and innovative
treatment options. Adding the Roberts Proton Therapy Center to
our repertoire of leading-edge treatments will offer hope and improve
the long-term quality of life for thousands of kids and adults with cancer.
THE RAYMOND
AND RUTH PERELMAN
CENTER FOR
ADVANCED MEDICINE
The Raymond and Ruth Perelman Center
for Advanced Medicine continues to remain
on schedule for a summer 2008 opening as
the new outpatient facility for the Abramson Cancer
Center. The changes in the past few months have been dramatic, and
watching the building come to life has been a wonderful experience
for patients, families and staff alike.
In April, the “topping out” of the building occurred as the final beam
was welded into place. Facing Civic Center Boulevard, this beam will
be a visible reminder of the hard work and dedication that have made
the Perelman Center possible.
Due to the incredible naming gift of $25 million by Raymond and
Ruth Perelman and the support shown by other donors, our shared
vision to create the most patient-centered, advanced medical facility
possible today is being accomplished. It is incredibly inspiring to see
this emerging building and realize that one day soon this will be the
place people from around the world will come to be cured.
Alliance for Cancer Gene Therapy
Barbara and Edward Netter (Penn ‘53) co-founded
Alliance for Cancer Gene Therapy (ACGT), the only
public charity dedicated exclusively to cancer gene
therapy research. In six years, ACGT has awarded
30 national grants ($18+ million), including support
for innovative research conducted by Drs. George
Coukos, Carl June and Robert Vonderheide.
Canary Foundation
Don Listwin founded the Canary Foundation in
2004 with a commitment to assisting the next
generation of cancer fighters on the frontlines
of early detection research. The University of
Pennsylvania is proud to be one of eight research
partners, and the Foundation has generously
supported the research efforts of Dr. George Coukos
on the early detection of ovarian cancer.

Since 1993, BCRF has raised

Independence Blue Cross
Independence Blue Cross (IBC) made a generous
gift to support an endowed chair named in honor
of John H. Glick, M.D. This gift reflects IBC’s deep
appreciation for the care given to G. Fred DiBona,
the former CEO of IBC, who bravely battled renal
cancer. The Glick Chair will bolster Penn’s ability
to continue to recruit top oncologists.

Saks Fifth Avenue’s KEY TO THE CURE
The Abramson Cancer Center is honored to partner
annually with Saks Fifth Avenue for KEY TO THE
CURE, a shopping event that benefits women’s
cancer research and patient programs. Events with
Saks Fifth Avenue have raised over $100,000 for our
women’s cancer programs over the past six years.
Teal Ribbon Ovarian Cancer
Research Foundation, Inc.
The Abramson Cancer Center is honored to be a
recipient of funding by The Teal Ribbon Ovarian
Cancer Research Foundation, Inc. (TROCRF).
TROCRF has provided crucial funding for Dr. George
Coukos and his team’s research on developing
better detection methods of ovarian cancer.
THE ABRAMSONS
In the ten years since the Abramson family’s gift
of $100 million established the Abramson Family
Cancer Research Institute at the University of
Pennsylvania, the Institute has been recognized as one
of the elite cancer research programs in the country. Their
gift has transformed the culture of clinical care at the Abramson
Cancer Center to a patient-centered approach.
Due to the vision and support of Madlyn and Leonard Abramson, the
Institute has evolved from a handful of newly recruited investigators to an
internationally recognized and respected group of physician scientists.
Nationally renowned cancer investigators have been recruited and retained;
currently, the Institute has 33 faculty members, including Dr. Celeste Simon,
the new Scientific Director. Dr. Simon, Professor of Cell and Developmental
Biology, was recently re-appointed as a Howard Hughes Medical Institute
Investigator, one of the highest recognitions of scientific excellence in the
United States.
The Abramson Cancer Center encompasses an institute for scientific inquiry
working alongside a cutting-edge clinical care operation. The interactions
between the Institute and the Abramson Cancer Center have accelerated basic
and translational research initiated through the Institute into new prevention,
diagnosis, and treatment programs at the Cancer Center. With the planned
construction projects at PENN Medicine, the symbiosis between the Institute
and the Cancer Center will be even further enhanced as they are united
within a physical structure embodying their integrative philosophy.
JOHN H. GLICK, M.D.
Nearly 20 years ago, soon after being appointed as the
Director of the Abramson Cancer Center, John H. Glick, M.D.
was named The Madlyn and Leonard Abramson Professor in
Clinical Oncology. Created through the generosity of the Abramson family,
the Abramson Professorship has enabled Dr. Glick to devote considerably
more time to each individual patient and to clinical research.
In recent months, the John H. Glick, M.D., Director’s Professorship was
established by multiple grateful patients and donors to honor Dr. Glick.
The Glick Professorship will be an important resource for the current and
future Directors of the Abramson Cancer Center.
