FOR OPENERS | DAVID PERLMANIn Syncopated TımeOne of the oddities of 17 years of seeing The WholeNotesafely to bed is a chronic state of never knowing quite whatmonth it is. This may seem odd to the reader, given thatthe backbone of what we do month in and month out isto break the world of music down into its constituent daily instances. If anyone should know what day it is, you’dthink it would be someone who spends halftheir working life compiling calendars of events. But therein lies the problem: on June 20,for example, the focus of my work was siftingthrough concert listings covering the periodJuly 1 to September 7, not just in our usual “GTA”and “Beyond GTA” contexts but over the wholevast canvas of Ontario and beyond, following themusic as it runs with the summer sun into everyimaginable corner of the region, indoor and out, urban and rural. And every so often I would find myself so taken withthe idea of some concert in, say, Stratford in mid-August that I wouldin my mind’s eye be a month or so further into the future than I am.No time of the year is this time warp more disconcerting than in thepreparation of this summer double issue. Imagine the slight chill, dearreader, on finding myself reading on June 20, the longest day of theyear, the very last listing in our GTA section, for a concert in the SummerMusic in the Garden series at the foot of Spadina Avenue, statingthat the concert will be shorter than normal “due to the early sunset.”Discombobulating as all this is, I can tell you that its obverse is farworse — namely the number of times in a typical year that I find myselfrealizing that I have only just missed some great concert, the nightbefore, because I thought it was long gone, having encountered it firsta whole month previously, sifting through the listings, waiting to putThe WholeNote to bed. “Should have read theblasted magazine,” I grumble to myself, butoften I don’t because the one I am “reading” isthe one that you, dear reader, will read not thistime round but the next.As I write this, my excuse for July’s concertsvanishing without a trace from my personalconcert going calendar is somewhat different. It is June 26 as I write, somewhere high overthe Atlantic, about to arc south of Lisbon andthen Algiers, to the horn of Africa, and then onagain, on one of those “maybe too late” journeys that each of us takesonce or twice in a lifetime. And so it is that instead of saying at this point, as I usually would, that I hope we cross paths during this summer, I say, instead, I hopeto see you sometime on its other side, a season of earlier sunsets thanthis one promises to be.And a nod to The WholeNote team for getting this magazine safelyto bed in my absence, as your reading this proves they have done.—David Perlman, publisher@thewholenote.comThe WholeNote The Toronto Concert-Goer’s GuideVOLUME 17 NO 10 | JULY 1 – SEPT 7, 2012720 Bathurst St., Suite 503Toronto ON M5S 2R4MAIN TELEPHONE 416-323-2232FAX 416-603-4791SWITCHBOARD & GENERAL INQUIRIES Ext 21Chairman of the Board | Allan Pulkerdirectors@thewholenote.comPublisher/Editor In Chief | David Perlmanpublisher@thewholenote.comCD Editor | David Oldsdiscoveries@thewholenote.comEvent Advertising/MembershipKaren Ages | members@thewholenote.comAdvertising/Production Support/OperationsJack Buell | adart@thewholenote.comDirector of MarketingGarry Page | marketing@thewholenote.comListings DepartmentSharna Searle | Listings Editorlistings@thewholenote.comOri Dagan | Associate Editor: Jazz, The ETCeterasjazz@thewholenote.com, etc@thewholenote.comWebsiteBryson Winchester | systems@thewholenote.comCirculation, Display Stands & SubscriptionsChris Malcolm | circulation@thewholenote.comPatrick Slimmon | patrick@thewholenote.comOMDC AND THE ONTARIO ARTS COUNCILARE AGENCIES OF THE GOVERNMENT OF ONTARIOTHANKS TO THIS MONTH’S CONTRIBUTORSBeat ColumnistsART OF SONG | Hans de GrootBANDSTAND | Jack MacQuarrieBOOK SHELF | Pamela MarglesCLASSICAL & BEYOND | Sharna SearleCHORAL SCENE | Benjamin SteinDISCOVERIES | David OldsEARLY MUSIC | Simone DesiletsIN THE CLUBS | Ori DaganIN WITH THE NEW | David PerlmanJAZZ NOTES | Jim GallowayMUSICAL LIFE | mJ buellMUSIC THEATRE | Robert WallaceOPERA | Christopher HoileWORLD MUSIC | Andrew TimarFeaturesRebecca Chua, Ori DaganCD ReviewersStuart Broomer, Lesley Mitchell-Clarke,Duncan Chisholm, Daniel Foley,Janos Gardonyi, Richard Haskell, Tiina Kiik,Alison Melville, Christina Petrowska Quilico,Ivana Popović, Bruce Surtees, Robert Tomas,Ken Waxman, Dianne WellsProofreadingSharna Searle, Ori Dagan,Karen Ages, Adam WeinmannListingsOri Dagan, Richard Haskell,Sharna Searle, Adam WeinmannLayout & DesignUno RamatCover Photo StylistLIZPRSUBSCRIPTIONS $30 per year + HST (10 issues)Upcoming Dates & DeadlinesFree Event Listings Deadline6pm Wednesday August 15Display Ad Reservations Deadline6pm Wednesday August 15Advertising Materials Due6pm Friday August 17Publication DateFriday August 31Next issue, Volume 18 No 1is the start of our 18th season and coversSeptember 1 to October 7, 2012WholeNote Media Inc. accepts no responsibility orliability for claims made for any product or servicereported on or advertised in this issue.Printed in CanadaCouto Printing & Publishing ServicesCirculation StatementMay 2012: 30,000 printed & distributed.Canadian Publication Product Sales Agreement1263846ISSN 14888-8785 WHOLENOTEPublications Mail Agreement #40026682Return undeliverable Canadian addresses to:WholeNote Media Inc.503–720 Bathurst StreetToronto ON M5S 2R4COPYRIGHT © 2012 WHOLENOTE MEDIA INCthewholenote.com6 thewholenote.comJuly 1 – September 7, 2012
