<strong>report</strong>. In it we recognize<br />
the Super Super Volunteers<br />
Volunteers<br />
and<br />
Super Donors who helped<br />
make <strong>2011</strong> one for the record<br />
books. We have much to<br />
celebrate, including:<br />
▰Record-breaking food<br />
drives, including the Church<br />
of Latter-day Saints doorto-door<br />
drive that collected<br />
more than 24,000 pounds of food;<br />
▰Increased grant support from Kaiser Permanente and the San Manuel Band of<br />
Mission Indians;<br />
▰And our Super Hero Campaign which attracted $125,000 of support—a new<br />
record!<br />
We are awed and gratified.<br />
If only all the news was as good.<br />
The families we serve continue to suffer from layoffs and foreclosures as the economy<br />
recovers more slowly in our area than in many others. Unfortunately, funding to help<br />
those facing homelessness has been severely cut. As you can see from our Statement<br />
of Fiscal Responsibility, only 18% of funds expended came from government grants<br />
last year—a reduction of more than $200,000 from 2010. New sources of revenue<br />
will have to be developed to replace this lost income in 2012.<br />
Although the year ahead will be a challenge, we will succeed with the help of our<br />
loyal donors and volunteers. Thank you for providing “a a hand up, not just a hand<br />
out” out to local families in desperate need. Your generosity truly makes a difference.<br />

<strong>Family</strong> <strong>Service</strong> rescued us. When my nine year-old daughter and I were<br />
hungry, you fed us. When we needed shelter, you helped us fi nd housing.<br />
Because of <strong>Family</strong> <strong>Service</strong>, my child laughs and is happy again.<br />

SPOTLIGHT ON SUPER DONORS:<br />
JERRY & BRENDA BEAN<br />
WHEN Jerry and Brenda Bean heard that <strong>Family</strong><br />
<strong>Service</strong> was struggling to meet the increased<br />
need in the community--with far fewer resources<br />
than in the past--they decided to do whatever<br />
they could to help. Jerry agreed to join the board,<br />
and the couple donated an unexpected major<br />
gift at the end of <strong>2011</strong>.<br />
The Beans, who have lived in Redlands for 29<br />
years, are longtime supporters of <strong>Family</strong> <strong>Service</strong>.<br />
A lifelong newspaperman, owner of Century<br />
Group Newspapers, and a Redlands City Council<br />
member, Jerry joined the board because he felt<br />
he could make a difference. <strong>Family</strong> <strong>Service</strong>’s<br />
philosophy of providing “a hand up, not just Jerry Bean helps out in <strong>Family</strong> <strong>Service</strong>'s<br />
food pantry.<br />
a hand out,” by giving emergency assistance<br />
while addressing the underlying problems contributing to family homelessness and<br />
poverty, was one he could endorse. “<strong>Family</strong> <strong>Service</strong> has been meeting the needs of<br />
our community for more than a hundred years,” said Jerry. “It’s a great organization. I’m<br />
honored to be part of it.”<br />
SPOTLIGHT ON SUPER VOLUNTEER:<br />
ROSE PALMER<br />
ROSE PALMER learned from her mother at a young<br />
age the joy of serving others. A mother of six herself<br />
and a devout member of the Church of Jesus Christ<br />
of Latter-day Saints, Rose’s enthusiasm and “can-do”<br />
attitude contribute to her success as a Super Volunteer.<br />
Rose joined the Board of Directors in 2006. She served<br />
six years on the board, much of that time as Second Vice<br />
President chairing the Events and Volunteers Committee.<br />
Her main contribution has been harnessing people’s<br />
desire to serve by creating organized opportunities that<br />
make contributing simple.<br />
Her accomplishments include leadership of the Easter<br />
and Thanksgiving Food Box programs, and coordination<br />
with chairs Janell and Terry Vines of the incredible<br />
Rose Palmer<br />
Thanksgiving LDS door-to-door food drive in November<br />
<strong>2011</strong>. That drive collected over 24,000 lbs. of food for <strong>Family</strong> <strong>Service</strong> clients. “We<br />
heard over and over how those who had little gave full bags of groceries during that<br />
food drive,” Rose said. “People are so generous. <strong>Family</strong> <strong>Service</strong> inspires that sort of<br />
dedication. I’m so proud to serve as a <strong>Family</strong> <strong>Service</strong> volunteer."
Case Management<br />
is the Answer<br />
Everyone needs help sometimes.<br />
At <strong>Family</strong> <strong>Family</strong> <strong>Service</strong><br />
<strong>Service</strong>, <strong>Service</strong> help is provided by a dedicated group of case<br />
managers and professional staff. Each family is assigned a case<br />
manager who works with adult family members to create a plan for<br />
returning the family to self-sufficiency. Our case managers truly offer<br />
a hand up, not just a hand out to families in need.<br />
<strong>Family</strong> <strong>Service</strong> provides support services to assist families back onto<br />
their feet after a financial crisis. These services include:<br />

FAMILY SERVICE TAPS RESERVES TO SUSTAIN MISSION<br />
We met the needs of a record number of families in <strong>2011</strong>—but at a price.<br />
▰PUBLIC FUNDING FOR HOUSING ASSISTANCE DECLINED.<br />
In 2010, 33% of <strong>Family</strong> <strong>Service</strong>’s budget was provided by government<br />
reimbursements that helped alleviate and prevent family homelessness.<br />
In <strong>2011</strong>, that number fell to 18%. 18% <strong>Family</strong> <strong>Service</strong> continued to help those in<br />
need despite the loss in funding.<br />
▰INCOME FROM INDIVIDUALS & PRIVATE FUNDERS INCREASED--BUT NOT<br />
ENOUGH. Many of our fundraising campaigns and events produced more<br />
revenue for <strong>Family</strong> <strong>Service</strong>’s programs last year. However, the increase did<br />
not make up for the loss in government grants and reimbursements. As a<br />
result, <strong>Family</strong> <strong>Service</strong> tapped financial reserves for an unprecedented—and<br />
unsustainable—third year.<br />
THE THE BOTTOM BOTTOM LINE LINE: We will continue to work to increase revenue in 2012 while<br />
maintaining <strong>Family</strong> <strong>Service</strong>’s financial health.<br />
We remain committed to our mission to alleviate poverty, encourage selfsufficiency,<br />
and promote the dignity of all people.<br />
