369.05 MATERIALS369.05.01 SealantsSealants shall be either liquid or preformed compression seals. Liquid sealants shall be according toOPSS 1212. Preformed compression seals shall meet the manufacturers’ requirements according toASTM D 2628.369.06 EQUIPMENT369.06.01 Diamond SawA reservoir shall be created using a diamond bladed saw. Routers shall not be used for creating thereservoir.369.06.02 Heating KettleWhere required, the heating kettle shall be designed and operated to ensure uniform heat, and to agitateand prevent overheating of the sealant.369.06.03 Compressed Air LanceThe hot compressed air lance shall have a discharge air temperature greater than 1000°C and an airvelocity greater than 1000 metres per second.369.07 CONSTRUCTION369.07.01 Removal of Existing SealantExisting sealant shall be removed without damaging the adjacent joint or crack faces. Residual sealantshall be removed by sawcutting to create clean faces to the required reservoir dimensions.369.07.02 ReservoirSaw cutting shall be used to create a cavity of specific dimensions designed to receive sealant.369.07.03 CleaningImmediately after the sawing operation, reservoirs shall be flushed with water in one direction to removethe slurry. Immediately prior to sealing operations, all joint faces shall be abrasive blast cleanedaccording to OPSS 929. The reservoir shall be blown clean and dried using an oil free hot compressedair lance.369.07.04 Backer Rod InstallationBacker rods shall have a minimum diameter of 25% greater than the reservoir width. They shall beinstalled immediately after cleaning and before sealant installation. Backer rods are inserted uniformly tothe required depth to achieve the required shape factor. The backer rod shall not be punctured or stretched during the installation process.Page 3 Rev. 369.07.05 Sealant Installation369.07.05.01 GeneralTransverse joints and cracks shall be filled prior to longitudinal joints. Sealant shall be installed accordingto the manufacturers’ recommendations.Grinding and milling operations shall be completed prior to sealant placement.Sealant shall be placed according to the manufacturers' specifications.369.07.05.02 Liquid SealantThe sealant shall be placed following the hot lance treatment by a manual pouring cone, or hose andwand fitted with proper size tip from a low pressure pump connected to the heating kettle. The tip of the cone or wand shall be placed to the top of the backer rod to ensure uniform application. The reservoir shall be filled with sealant so that upon cooling, the sealant shall be 3 to 6 mm recessedbelow the adjacent pavement surface. If after the initial placement, the material subsides below the required recess depths, additional sealantshall be placed.Sealant damaged by construction traffic or Contractor's operations shall be replaced by the Contractor atthe Contractor's expense.Any spilled material or excess material in the joints or cracks shall be removed immediately and thepavement surface cleaned.369.07.05.03 Compression SealAfter final cleaning of the reservoir, the lubricant adhesive shall be applied to the seal and the seal shallbe installed according to the manufacturers' specifications. During installation, twisting, nicking or otherdamage to the seal shall be avoided.369.07.06 Management and Disposal of Excess MaterialManagement and disposal of excess material shall be according to OPSS 180.369.08 QUALITY ASSURANCEDuring the process of placement the Contractor shall, upon request by the Contract Administrator, provide a sample of the seal or sealant for testing.Page 4 Rev.
