These corevalues are easily stripped into three basicprinciples: an almost-unanimous endorsement ofthe pursuit of excellence in all things, includingathletics; universal identification of athletics as anintegral part of the educational mission of theinstitution and citation of the intrinsic value toeach of the participants, including personal andsocial maturation, the education of the wholeperson, the development of a healthy lifestyle andlearning the value of the pursuit of goals in acollective context; and identification of athletics asone of the best ways to develop and foster asense of community. The universal benefits ofathletics are conferred alike on the quarterback atOhio State playing in front of 100,000 spectatorsand the Ohio Wesleyan field hockey playerplaying in front of a small weekday crowd.2006-07 Ohio Wesleyan Golf3

The campaign is focused on both athletics and recreation, andit is estimated that at least 80 percent of the student body uses these facilities on a regularbasis. The upgrades to the Selby field and track, especially the artificial turf installation, willextend the use of this facility seasonally, and it will allow teams to share the fields evenduring the individual team seasons. Incoming student-athletes have reported theirexcitement over the propect of playing in renovated and new facilities. For example, our verystrong softball program will soon benefit from its own new field, now being constructed southof the baseball diamond. Student-athlete recruiting has benefitted not only from the obvious ongoingimprovement, but also from the planned upgrades and new facilities that will come on line as we continue toreceive contributions to the Remembering Mr. Rickey campaign.2006-07 Ohio Wesleyan Golf11

The goals of theAlumni "W" Association are to improvecommunications with alumni athletes, improve thecurrent athletic program and raise funds to supportannual operations of the current athletic program.Through the efforts of this group, individual teamalumni gatherings are held yearly, such as a men’s soccer golf outing andalumni game to celebrate 50 years of men’s soccer at OWU. Also, usinge-mail, OWU keeps alumni informed about the current teams’ activitiesand upcoming events. Each of OWU's 22 varsity teams has acorresponding alumni group called the Committee for Excellence. Thesegroups have programs to support the current coaches’ needs, mostlyrecruiting assistance. Another item is the annual Dale J. Bruce Scholar-Athlete Awards Dinner, at which time the University’s top scholar-athletesare honored. Through Team OWU, the principal athletic fundraisingprogram, and other special events, the Alumni "W" Association raisesabout $140,000 annually. We know of no other Division III universitywhich raises as much money annually to support its athletic programs.142006-07 Ohio Wesleyan Golf

Remembering Mr. Rickey CampaignOhio Wesleyan University is well into its first-ever campaigndirected at fulfilling the needs of the University’s athletic andrecreation programs as well as the physical education department.Named “Remembering Mr. Rickey,” the $22 million campaignwill have a profound impact on all aspects of Ohio Wesleyanathletics. The campaign was announced at Ohio Wesleyan’sCommencement in 2004, the 100th anniversary of Rickey’s graduationfrom Ohio Wesleyan. At that event, Rickey’s grandson,Branch Rickey III ’67, and Jackie Robinson’s daughter, Sharon, together addressed the graduating seniors. As of July, 2006, campaign fundraising had surpassed $5million and portions of the vision have become reality.Work has commenced on Margaret Sagan Field, the completionof which will bring Battling Bishop softball back on campus forthe first time since it was reinstated as a varsity sport in 2000.Work also has begun at Selby Field, where an OmniGrassartificial playing surface has been installed and the GeorgeGauthier Track has been rebuilt with an Ameritan FP surface.Among the new facilities to be constructed is an aquaticsfacility featuring a 25-yard, 8-lane pool with a diving area.
