Q. What happens if I put other wasteinto the green bin?Non-recyclable materials in green bins contaminate recyclablematerials. Black bin waste in a green bin can contaminatean entire wagon-load. The recycling facility will not accept itand we have to take it to a landfill site. This means two lots oftransportation and charges that are costly, both financially andenvironmentally.Contaminated bins will not be emptied. We’ll leave a stickerasking you to remove these items before the next collection day.Q. If I’m receiving fewer collections, wilI I get a reduction in my council tax?We cannot make any reductions as your council tax paymentsare not actually a direct payment for specific services youreceive, but a contribution towards the cost of all councilservices. These include Adult Social Care, Children’s Services, education, highways, street lighting, waste disposal, parks, leisure centres and libraries. Your payments also partially fundthe police, fire and rescue services and public transport. If morepeople recycle correctly, more of your council tax can be spenton valuable services rather than expensive landfill charges.Q. Does every resident have to recycle?Recycling is everybody’s responsibility! It is simply not practicaland the council cannot afford to sort every household’s waste.By making small changes - which soon become a routine - wecan reduce the amount of waste we throw away. This will helpthe environment and save money on landfill charges – which willbenefit Leeds.10
