The 1925football team, under George Gauthier, “The Little Giant,” went 7-1-1. Its only loss came to Ohio State by a 10-3 score, and it tiedSyracuse, 3-3, en route to winning Ohio Conference and Big Sixchampionships.

2007 Bishop OutlookOhio Wesleyan head coach Sean Ryan and his BattlingBishop squad will seek to celebrate the 50th season of men’slacrosse at Ohio Wesleyan by reclaiming the North Coast AthleticConference championship and not only returning to the NCAADivision III playoffs, but advancing in the playoffs.“We feel we have the talent to advance to the next level,” Ryansaid. “We have to take it one game at a time and not look down theroad to the bigger-name opponents. With the structure of theNCAA tournament, it’s important that we win each game, and theone-game-at-a-time approach will be important to the success ofthe 2007 season.”The Bishop attack returns a pair of lettermen in sophomoresKarl Zimmerman (20 goals, 14 assists in 2006) and Eric Turner (14-8). Zimmerman was a first-team All-NCAC selection last year, while Turner moves to his natural position after starting 5 games inthe midfield a year ago.The third starting spot is up for grabs between sophomore DanCastignola, a high school All-American who did not play at Fairfieldin 2006; and freshmen Chris Ehlinger, Chaz Narwicz, DanRichards and Rob Young. Narwicz and Richards each were allstatepicks in high school, while Ehlinger and Young were allleaguehonorees. Freshmen Gavin Cunningham and JamesMcCready, both all-league picks in high school, also are in the mix.“They are all quality players who bring different assets to thegame and our overall offensive scheme,” Ryan said. The Bishop midfield returns a potent top line in juniors ChrisEccles (37-23), Steve Fowler (11-6) and Harrison Iuliano (12-3).Eccles was named NCAC Player of the Year and was an honorablemention All-America pick last season. Fowler ranked secondamong Bishop midfielders in scoring, while Iuliano’s 12 goals wereone off the team lead when a back injury shelved him for 5 gamesand most of a sixth.Senior B.C. Shrader wasan All-Midwest pick in high school, while Scheetz was an all-districtselection.Freshmen Peter Boucher, Dane Frank, Andy Princehorn, AlexRazzolini and Riker Vermilye also will battle for playing time.Princehorn was an all-state pick in high school, while Razzolinireceived all-region honors and Frank and Vermilye were allconferencechoices.Senior Chad Pouliot (1-1) returns as the Bishops’ faceoffspecialist and will be joined by freshman Craig Aronoff, an allconferenceselection in high school.Juniors Nate Mauro (0-1) and Lee Roberson (0-1) are back asthe short-stick defensive midfielders, along with senior AshahNelms, who lettered as a freshman but has not played since, andfreshman Chris Ready, who was an all-state pick last year.Junior Andres McAlister (2-0) returns at the long-stick defensivemidfielder spot, with juniors Brian Test and Grant Ditty andfreshman Pat Williams also seeking to contribute.Close defense should the Bishops’ strong point this season, with 3 senior starters returning. Senior Peter Hargrove was a firstteamAll-NCAC selection last year, while classmate Adam Guy was2Senior Chad Pouliot has handled most of the Bishops’ faceoffs forthe past 2 seasons.a second-team all-conference selection. These corevalues are easily stripped into three basicprinciples: an almost-unanimous endorsement ofthe pursuit of excellence in all things, includingathletics; universal identification of athletics as anintegral part of the educational mission of theinstitution and citation of the intrinsic value toeach of the participants, including personal andsocial maturation, the education of the wholeperson, the development of a healthy lifestyle andlearning the value of the pursuit of goals in acollective context; and identification of athletics asone of the best ways to develop and foster asense of community. The universal benefits ofathletics are conferred alike on the quarterback atOhio State playing in front of 100,000 spectatorsand the Ohio Wesleyan field hockey playerplaying in front of a small weekday crowd.42007 Ohio Wesleyan Men's Lacrosse

Thecampaign is focused on both athletics andrecreation, and it is estimated that at least 80percent of the student body uses these facilities ona regular basis. The upgrades to the Selby fieldand track, especially the artificial turf installation, will extend the use of this facility seasonally, and itwill allow teams to share the fields even during theindividual team seasons. Incoming studentathleteshave reported their excitement over theprospect of playing in renovated and new facilities. For example, our very strong softball program willsoon benefit from its own new field, now beingconstructed south of the baseball diamond.Student-athlete recruiting has benefitted not onlyfrom the obvious ongoing improvement, but alsofrom the planned upgrades and new facilities thatwill come on line as we continue to receivecontributions to the Remembering Mr. Rickeycampaign.2007 Ohio Wesleyan Men's Lacrosse19

The goals of the Alumni "W" Association are toimprove communications with alumni athletes, improvethe current athletic program and raise funds to supportannual operations of the current athletic program. Throughthe efforts of this group, individual team alumni gatheringsare held yearly, such as a men’s soccer golf outing andalumni game to celebrate 50 years of men’s soccer atOWU. Also, using e-mail, OWU keeps alumni informed about the current teams’activities and upcoming events. Each of OWU's 22 varsity teams has acorresponding alumni group called the Committee for Excellence. These groupshave programs to support the current coaches’ needs, mostly recruitingassistance. Another item is the annual Dale J. Bruce Scholar-Athlete AwardsDinner, at which time the University’s top scholar-athletes are honored. ThroughTeam OWU, the principal athletic fundraising program, and other special events, the Alumni "W" Association raises about $140,000 annually. We know of noother Division III university which raises as much money annually to support itsathletic programs.302007 Ohio Wesleyan Men's Lacrosse

Remembering Mr. Rickey CampaignOhio Wesleyan University is well into its first-ever campaigndirected at fulfilling the needs of the University’s athletic andrecreation programs as well as the physical education department.Named “Remembering Mr. Rickey,” the $22 million campaignwill have a profound impact on all aspects of Ohio Wesleyanathletics. The campaign was announced at Ohio Wesleyan’sCommencement in 2004, the 100th anniversary of Rickey’s graduationfrom Ohio Wesleyan. At that event, Rickey’s grandson,Branch Rickey III ’67, and Jackie Robinson’s daughter, Sharon, together addressed the graduating seniors. As of July, 2006, campaign fundraising had surpassed $5million and portions of the vision have become reality.Work has commenced on Margaret Sagan Field, the completionof which will bring Battling Bishop softball back on campus forthe first time since it was reinstated as a varsity sport in 2000.Work also has begun at Selby Field, where an OmniGrassartificial playing surface has been installed and the GeorgeGauthier Track has been rebuilt with an Ameritan FP surface.Among the new facilities to be constructed is an aquaticsfacility featuring a 25-yard, 8-lane pool with a diving area. An indoorturf facility also will be built, allowing unprecedented freedom andflexibility in scheduling practices for virtually every Battling Bishopteam. The turf facility will house a field of approximately 45 yardsby 70 yards, or about three-quarters the size of a regulation footballfield.Enhancements to all existing facilities are a significant portionof the campaign as well. Major enhancements include:• Branch Rickey Arenawill receive a new, glassed-inlobby and entrance on theeast side of the existing building, featuring additional seating, space dedicated to All-America and Athletics Hall ofFame honorees and providingeasier access to seatingand parking;• Gordon Field Housewill receive a new floor andsubsurface, new netting anda brightened interior;• Selby Field will receive a refurbishing of the press box andexisting concrete walls surrounding the field;• The field hockey field will be expanded to meet regulationsize requirements for both field hockey and women’s lacrosse;• Edwards Gym, which celebrated its centennial during thecampaign, will undergo extensive remodeling to include moreoffices and classrooms, as well as new locker rooms and conferenceareas. The existing weight room will be fully renovated andfurnished with new equipment.Tying the facilities together will be a gateway concept that willbridge the north and south athletics areas. This gateway willfeature green space and be integrated with the city of Delaware’supcoming bike path projects. An overview of Ohio Wesleyan's athletics facilities. For more information on the Remembering Mr. Rickey campaign, visit the campaign Web site at http://mrrickey.owu.edu orcall 740-368-3300.362007 Ohio Wesleyan Men's Lacrosse

Home of the BishopsThe Battling Bishop men’s lacrosse teamplays its home games at Selby Field, located onSouth Henry Street on the eastern edge ofcampus. An OmniGrass artificial playing surfacewas installed for the 2006-07 academic year, making Selby one of the most impressive venuesamong NCAA Division III institutions.Built in 1929, Selby boasts a natural grassfield and a seating capacity of 9100. It hostedthe 1988 NCAA Division III championshipgame and has been the site of numerousplayoff contests.Designed by George Gauthier, OhioWesleyan’s Hall of Fame football coach andathletic director, and constructed by theOsborn Engineering Company (who also builtYankee Stadium), the complex was namedafter George D. Selby, who served the OhioWesleyan board of trustees for 24 years. His sons, Mark, Homer,Pearl and Roger donated $100,000 of the project’s $160,000 cost.Selby Field recently underwent a restoration project thatincluded a new, 2-level press box, new bleacher seats and refurbishedlocker rooms. Selby also houses the George GauthierTrack, an Ameritan FP surface installed in 2006.From 1965 through 1984, the Bishops played their homegames at Roy Rike Field, also home of the soccer teams. Duringthe spring of 1985, field maintenance at Roy Rike forced thelacrosse team to move to Selby for a year, but the relocation workedout so well it became permanent. Prior to obtaining Roy Rike Field,Ohio Wesleyan home games were played at South Field, whichwas located on Henry Street south of Selby Field, approximatelywhere the Bishops’ practice field is today.Athletic FacilitiesThe crown jewel of Ohio Wesleyan’s athletic facilities is SelbyField, which is the home of the Bishop football, field hockey, track& field and men’s lacrosse contingents. An OmniGrass artificial playing surface was installed for the2006-07 academic year, making Selby one of the most impressivevenues among NCAA Division III institutions. Constructed in 1929,Selby received a new, fully-enclosed 2-level press box and newbleacher seats in the first part of a 3-phase restoration program andrefurbished locker rooms in the program’s second phase. Thefacility, which seats 9100 and is the fourth-largest college-ownedfield in NCAA Division III, was the site of the 1988 Division III men’slacrosse championship game.Selby also houses the George Gauthier Track, an AmeritanFP surface installed for the 2006-07 academic year. The site of 15of the first 22 NCAC outdoor track & field championships, Selby isbelieved to be the oldest facility in the nation constructed toOlympic specifications and remaining in its original configuration.Across campus, Roy Rike Field hosts soccer, primarily underthe lights. Widely regarded as one of the Midwest’s finest facilitiesfor the sport, Roy Rike Field was the site of the NCAA Division IIIsemifinals and championship game for men in 1990 and 1998 andfor women in 2001. Roy Rike also serves as the home field for thewomen’s lacrosse team. The centerpiece of Ohio Wesleyan’s athletic facilities is theBranch Rickey Physical Education Center, prized for both its sizeand versatility. Its Richard Gordon Field House, with a 5-lane, 200-meter track, annually hosted the Ohio Athletic Conference Championshipsand the women’s state title meet as well as the first 9North Coast Athletic Conference championships. Indoor practicefor fall and spring sports can be handled there as well: floor spaceis larger than a football field, accommodating 6 courts for basketball, volleyball and tennis.Branch Rickey Arena, seating 2300, hosts varsity basketballand volleyball contests. Its backboards and standards were firstGordon Field Houseused in the 1976 Olympic Games. Also in the Center are 5 handball/racquetball courts, a squash court, offices, locker rooms andlounges.Offices and locker rooms also are part of Edwards Gymnasium, which is connected by tunnel to the Rickey Center and in turnadjoins Pfeiffer Natatorium, home of the Bishop swimming teams.Remodeling in Edwards has recently included an expandedstrength facility.Baseball is played at Littick Field, site of the 2003 NCAADivision III Mideast Regional; and tennis at the Tennis Centre, acomplex of 12 outdoor courts where the 1978 NCAA Division IIIchampionships were held. The cross country teams run at nearby Methodist TheologicalSchool and Dornoch Golf Club, which hosted the NCAA Division IIImen’s and women’s championships in 1984 and 2005 and annuallyplays host to the All-Ohio Intercollegiate championship meet.
