Cure MechanismSikaflex ® -291 cures by reaction withatmospheric moisture. At lowtemperatures the water content ofthe air is generally lower and thecuring reaction proceeds somewhatslower (see diagram).Thickness of cure (mm)128423°C / 50% r.h10°C / 50% r.h00 2 4 6Time (days)10Diagram 1: Curing speed Sikaflex ® -291Chemical ResistanceSikaflex ® -291 is resistant to freshwater, seawater, limewater, sewageeffluent, diluted acids and causticsolutions; temporarily resistant tofuels, mineral oils, vegetable andanimal fats and oils; not resistant toorganic acids, alcohol, concentratedmineral acids and caustic solutionsor solvents. The above information is offered forgeneral guidance only. Advice onspecific applications will be given onrequest. Contact the TechnicalService Department of Sika Industryat 888-832-7452.Method of ApplicationSurface preparationSurfaces must be clean, dry, free ofoil and grease, and of sound quality.Thoroughly remove all looseparticles such as residues of color, splashes, etc. Clean surface with astrong jet of compressed air, sandblast, solvent.Pretest substrates for adhesion.Cleaners and/or primers may berequired to achieve optimaladhesion. Please refer to theSurface Preparation Guidelines forspecific application information.Advice on specific applications isavailable from the Technical ServiceDepartment of Sika Industry.ApplicationRecommended applicationtemperatures: 41 o F-104 o F (5-40C).For cold-weather application, storeunits at approximately 70 o F; removejust prior to using. Make sure joint isfrost free. Cut tip of plastic nozzle tojoint size. Puncture air tight seal.Install with hand or power operatedcaulking gun. For bestperformance, Sikaflex ® -291 shouldbe gunned into joint when joint slotis mid-point of its designedexpansion and contraction. Tofacilitate tooling, wet pointing tool orfinger with soap solution. For adviceon selecting and setting up asuitable pump system please contactthe System Engineering Departmentof Sika Industry at 888-832-7452.2hFigure 1:bRecommended beadconfigurationTooling and finishingTooling and finishing must becarried out within the tack free timeof the sealant. We recommend theuse of Sika ® -Slick Cutout Lubricantand Tooling Agent. Other finishingagents or lubricants must be testedfor suitability/compatibility.RemovalUncured Sikaflex ® -291 may beremoved from tools and equipmentwith mineral spirit or an othersuitable solvent. Once cured, thematerial can only be removedmechanically. Hands and exposedskin should be washed immediatelyusing a suitable industrial handcleanser and water. Do not usesolvents on hands!OverpaintingSikaflex ® -291 can be overpaintedwhen tack-free. The paint and paintprocess must be tested forcompatibility by carrying outpreliminary trials. Sikaflex ® -291bhshould not be exposed to bakingtemperatures until it has attained fullcure. It should be understood thatthe hardness and film thickness ofthe paint may impair the elasticity ofthe sealant and lead to cracking ofthe paint film with time.Limitations- Do not apply on frozen surface orthrough standing water.- Do not apply over silicones or inthe presence of curing silicones.- Avoid contact with alcohol andalcohol containing solvents duringcure.- Allow minimum of 1 week full cureprior to total water immersionsituations.- Maximum chlorine exposure 2.5ppm.- Do not use as a deck seamsealant.CAUTION: IRRITANT.Irritant;Sensitizer:ContainsPolyisocyanate pre- polymer, xylene. May cause skin / eye /respiratory irritation. May causeskin and/or respiratory sensitizationafter prolonged or repeated contact.Avoid contact. Xylene may causeheadaches, dizziness or other CNSeffects; and may cause liver orkidney effects. Use only withadequate ventilation. Use of safetygoggles and chemical resistantgloves is recommended.
