We want your stay with us to be as pleasant as possible. With around 100 learners in Hall, weneed to make some rules to ensure that everyone is treated fairly. All <strong>Boston</strong> <strong>College</strong> learnersare treated as adults so mature behaviour is expected .1. PAYMENT OF FEESRents are due termly in advance with a deposit payable for damages (at present £150). These includeChristmas, Easter and half term holidays but a charge of £450 is payable for anyone wishing to staythrough the Summer holiday (1.7.14 – 31.8.14).2. LICENCEEvery person will be required to sign a Licence which will be for one academic year. Anyone wishing to bereleased from this contract may be allowed to do so, if a suitable replacement tenant can be found, oncondition that all the rooms in the Hall of Residence are already occupied and a fee of £150 will becharged to cover administration and cleaning costs. Where no replacement tenant can be found thetenancy agreement will stand and rent remain payable under it even if the room is vacated.3. ROOMSTo assist the <strong>House</strong>keepers, please keep your room as tidy as possible. Your cleaner will tell you whichday your room will be cleaned. All residents must keep their room in a clean and tidy state. Any damageor maintenance problems should be reported to the Warden, <strong>House</strong>keepers or <strong>Accommodation</strong> Officeras soon as possible.4. CATERED ACCOMMODATION - MEALSFood vouchers are distributed each half term and the amount provided, around £6 available to spendeach day. Food vouchers may be used to buy food available from:Monday to Friday onlyRochford Diner The Bistro, Rochford Coffee Shop, Rochford Peter Paine Performance CentreSaturday and SundayThere will be no food available from the <strong>College</strong> during weekends, so catered residents will need to buyand prepare their own food at weekends and during <strong>College</strong> holidays.FOOD VOUCHERSFood vouchers will not be refunded for cash. If, after the first payment term, you do not wish to continueto have food vouchers, then you can pay for the room only. If you have paid in advance for the year, thena refund can be given for the full amount of payment term 2 if permission is given by parents/guardians. HOUSE RULES & GENERAL INFORMATION5. KITCHENSPlease help the <strong>House</strong>keepers by washing dishes and switching off and wiping down the cooker after use,and placing all food in cupboards or refrigerator. All dishes/pans etc. must be washed, dried and putaway into cupboards. Any left out will be thrown away.6. MISCELLANEOUS ITEMSToilet tissue, light bulbs and rubbish bags are available from <strong>House</strong>keepers or Wardens or Security Office.7. HEATERSIf switched on, room heaters will operate automatically between the hours of 7am and 1am. Please switchoff when heat not required, and do not leave windows open with heaters on. Please note that NOportable heaters are allowed, any found will be confiscated.


8. NOISELoud noise is NOT allowed. Music players, televisions, etc. must be kept to a low level. Music may only beplayed through headphones between 11 pm and 8 am. The <strong>College</strong> Security Officer and Warden willmonitor noise levels, and disciplinary warnings may be given. Anyone in breach of their Agreement will gothrough the disciplinary procedure, which may result in equipment being removed.9. PARTIESParties are NOT allowed in the Hall of Residence. Disciplinary action may be taken against anyone involvedin a party.10. GUESTSThere may be rooms available for overnight visitors at a low charge. Please ask the <strong>Accommodation</strong> Officer.You are NOT allowed to have overnight guests in your room. Do not give your keys to anyone and allowthem to stay in your room while you are away, as they will be asked to leave immediately. All visitors mustleave by 11.00pm Sunday - Thursday and 12.30pm on Friday and Saturday.11. CAR PARKINGAny resident or their visitors wishing to bring a car onto Campus must use the main car park.12. FIRE/EMERGENCYYou will find a notice concerning fire regulations in your room. Please read it carefully and note emergencyexits and assembly points. All fire doors must be kept closed.13. FIRE EXTINGUISHERSPlaying with fire extinguishers is costly and dangerous. They are to be used only in cases of fire. If the tagand/or pin is removed at any other time the person responsible will be charged £25. If no-one admitsresponsibility, then the cost will be shared between everyone living in the flat.14. MOVING ROOMSIf you wish to change rooms, please speak with the <strong>Accommodation</strong> Officer. The exchange of rooms isNOT allowed without permission. The sub-letting of rooms is strictly prohibited.15. HOLIDAY ARRANGEMENTSLearners wishing to stay in the Hall or leave their possessions in their room during Christmas, Easter and halfterm holidays will be allowed to do so. Storage during Summer holidays is available for learners who plan tocontinue to study at the <strong>College</strong>.16. LAUNDRYLaundry facilities are available on site. The costs are £2.40 for washing and £1.00 (45 mins) for drying. Thecode for the laundry room is C47890. The laundry will be locked every evening at 11 pm.17. ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENTAll personal items of electrical equipment brought into the Hall must be in a safe condition. Unauthorisedcooking stoves, ovens, heating rings of any description or heating appliances are NOT allowed. Electricaladaptors are available to buy from the <strong>Accommodation</strong> Office at around £3.18. PINBOARDSA pinboard is supplied. DO NOT use the walls for posters etc. as sellotape and Blu-tak etc. will damage thepaintwork.19. CHECKING YOUR OWN ROOM (ON ARRIVAL)When you move in you should complete the form ‘Inventory & Room Checklist’ and return it to the<strong>Accommodation</strong> Officer.


20. DAMAGES DEPOSITYou will have paid a £150 deposit, which will be held by the <strong>College</strong> and returned to you at the end of the<strong>College</strong> year. This deposit will be used against any damage from misuse which may occur to furnishings andfittings in your accommodation.21. SMOKINGThe Hall of Residence is a strictly NO SMOKING AREA. Disciplinary action will be taken against anyone foundsmoking inside or around the outside areas including staircases. The designated smoking area is opposite theDiner.22. ALCOHOLAlcohol is banned at the Hall of Residence. Disciplinary action will be taken against any resident found drinkingin or around the Hall of Residence or found drunk on <strong>College</strong> premises.23. ILLEGAL SUBSTANCES (DRUGS)Anyone found in possession of or using illegal substances (drugs) will be in breach of their licence and subjectto the disciplinary procedure which may lead to eviction from Hall of Residence, expulsion from their course ofstudy and possible Police prosecution. <strong>Boston</strong> <strong>College</strong> has an arrangement with the Police for them to bring intheir sniffer dogs into the Hall of Residence for training purposes.24. WEAPONSResidents are not permitted to keep weapons of any kind, whether real or replica. This includes items such asguns, knives, swords etc.25. SECURITYPlease note that <strong>Boston</strong> <strong>College</strong> will not take responsibility for any loss of or damage to personal items. Youshould lock windows and doors. Personal insurance is recommended and details can be obtained from the<strong>Accommodation</strong> Office.26. BICYCLESBicycles are easily stolen. If you buy a bicycle you need to ensure that it is locked, preferably with astrong ‘D’ lock (see picture). Bicycle storage is available in the Hall of Residence. Please ask for a keyfrom the <strong>Accommodation</strong> Office.27. TELEVISIONSIt is the responsibility of each individual owning/renting a television to ensure he/she has an up-to-datetelevision licence.28. INTERNET2 GB Download and 750 MB Upload is allowed per day. Once you have reached your daily limit you willbe disconnected until midnight.You can pay for additional upload/download (to 5 GB and 2 GB) at a cost of £10 per month.You should NOT use P2P programs such as bittorrent, emule, kazaa etc.You MUST leave your network setting to ‘AUTOMATIC’ and NOT fix your IP address.You MUST install a virus scanner and antispyware. Recommend: www.eset.com and www.safernetworking.orgIf you try and bypass these rules this may result in permanent disconnection.To obtain connection to the Hall of Residence internet system, please take your computer to the ComputerTechnicians in Rochford main building with a completed copy of the ‘Internet Access ApplicationForm’.Residents should only plug in their PCs/laptops. Routers will stop the service from working. If you arefound to misuse the equipment/service, your connection will be terminated/removed. Internet cables are available from the <strong>Accommodation</strong> Office for around £3.


29. COMMON ROOMThe Common Room will be open each evening from 5.30pm – 11.00pm.30. MEDICAL/ILLNESSThe <strong>College</strong> will arrange for all learners new to the area to register with a local Doctors' surgery. This is Stuart<strong>House</strong> Surgery, Sleaford Road Medical Centre, Sleaford Road, <strong>Boston</strong> PE21 8EG. You can make an appointmentto see the Nurse or Doctor on phone number 01205 362173 or the <strong>Accommodation</strong> Officer will make an appointmentfor you.If you are ill and cannot leave your room, then you must tell someone.During normal <strong>College</strong> hours ask a friend or flatmate to find a member of staff in the <strong>Accommodation</strong> or<strong>International</strong> Office; or phone the <strong>Accommodation</strong> Office (01205 365701 ext. 3225 or 3238) or email sueh@boston.ac.ukand someone will come and see you. During the evenings/weekends the Warden or SecurityOfficer should be found. If you cannot find them, phone the emergency number given below.If you need some medical advice over the phone you can contact NHS Advice on 111 or if you need to see aDoctor outside normal <strong>College</strong> hours, then you should call a taxi to take you to the Pilgrim Hospital. The SecurityOfficer or Warden can help you to call a taxi, however, you will be responsible for the cost. Only if you have anabsolute medical EMERGENCY should you phone 999 for an ambulance.31.
