Get your daily dose of grains - 6 to11 servings of grain foods each day. Ex.: bagels, breads, cereals,tortillas, crackers, rice, barley & pasta.2. Fiber each day. It keeps your digestive tract running smoothly, can lower your cholesterol, improveblood sugar levels, and may protect against cancer. Ex: fruits, veggies, all grains orfoods made from grains.3. Sneak exercise into your daily life - take walks with friends, or family, park a little further awaywhen looking for a parking spot. Even if you walk short distances, every bit helps.4. Folic acid can reduce stroke risk. Good sources include cereal, enriched breads, bagels, enrichedpasta, orange juice, spinach, strawberries, peas, and lettuce.5. Listen to the American Heart Assoc. and say “NO” to diets that advocate: miracle foods,rapid weight lose with no exercise, specific food combinations, bizarre quantities, or rigidmenus.6. Enjoy your food even if you’re in a hurry.Chew slowly and focus on the meal, notwhat’s waiting for you. Do not gulp downyour food for you will be more apt to consumemore than you need.7. Make your food portions sensible.8. If you want a brownie for desert, go aheadand enjoy it. Treat yourself right; just rememberto make healthful trade offs during theday.9. Snack only when you are hungry and watchportion sizes. Avoid emotional snacking! Ifyou are bored, depressed or stressed; call afriend, read a book or go for a walk insteadof snacking. Keep healthy snacks on handso they are ready when you are.10. Grab grapes, graham crackers or cereal tosatisfy those munchies.11. Try a glass of water before reaching for asnack.
