Following a massive renovation of the oldBuffaloes Club building by J.D Wetherspoon, theWild Boar honours Houghton’s venerable past withframed photographs of Old Houghton, a HoughtonFeast photograph montage, as well as speciallycommissioned paintings of Houghton Colliery andHoughton Feast by artist Nikki Jones. The building actually dates from the 1960s when itwas constructed on the corner of Frederick Placeand 13 Sunderland Street, following massdemolition in the area for the A690 dualcarriageway. The original property was a butchers shop andstore, however this was replaced with a purposebuilt clubhouse for the Royal Antediluvian Order ofBuffaloes, known locally as the Buffs (the originalBuffs Club had been located opposite but met itsfate at the hands of the developers of the A690dual-carriageway). Houghton Buffs ceased tradingon Tuesday September 14 th 2010 and the WildBoar opened on Tuesday April 19 th 2011.COPYRIGHT © PAUL LANAGAN 2011
