Wow, and what about breakinga 35 year old record for the lowest high temp of 50 degrees? We crushed the old record by 5 degrees and withjust a little rain! We did that here in Portland at least twice in the last few weeks. Crazy weather or not it's time to getout and ride. With the Season Opener, Summer Scorcher, Maupin Madness, Baker City, and plenty of local day rides there are plentyof opportunities to get out and enjoy your motorcycles this summer. Continue to be careful of road conditions like sand, gravel, dirt, oils, fuel spills, or those vehicles that want to turn or pull out in front of you like you do not exist! Just beaware and be careful. Remember that low road surface temps effect how well your tires work, so check your motorcycleover, make sure your lights work and the tire pressures are correct. Get it into the shop if needed and get ready!See you around at breakfast, the shop, and on rides!Bye For Now and Be Safe!

P a g e 4w w w . r a t - p a c k . c o mO N THE ROAD AGAINP U T T ING M Y FOOT DOW Nby Will AmmuttI was having lunch with a couple of riding buddies at ourlocal McMenamin’s and the topic of controlled intersectionscame up. Steve was talking about being in a left turn laneon the stem of a T-intersection. He said that he waited for along time and the light never changed so he looked allaround to make sure he wasn’t being suckered and then hetreated the intersection like a stop sign and went ahead.Young Brian nodded enthusiastically and agreed. Theylooked at me to see what I’d say. There was a time that Iwould have agreed as well but not any longer. I think mysolution would have been toturn right and find a place toreverse direction legally. While Steve nodded inagreement, Brian was a littlebit harder to convince. This isnot to say I have not doneexactly what Steve did. Timeof day and the accompanyingtraffic load are considerationsbut ignoring the letterof the law (red light) mightget you an award, or atleast a warning, from thepolice. My concern was basedaround more than a citationor contact with law enforcement. How many times haveyou read accounts ofmotorcycle vs. automobile accidents where the driver sayshe or she didn’t see the bike? I worry about the same thingin reverse. What if you pulled out into the traffic lane andhad not spotted an on-coming vehicle, maybe evenanother motorcycle? Scoff if you will, but the consequenceof being wrong is a potential disaster and the legalramifications may be the least of your problems. We sipped our sodas and munched more artery hardeningfood. I swallowed and then offered another hypothetical.Let’s say you come up to a four-way stop with no othervehicles in sight. Do you come to a complete stop and putyour foot down or do you almost stop and then go? Brianquickly answered that he would be checking the otherstreets as he slowed and then, if there was no traffic, he’dgo ahead and go. We both looked at him for a momentand then he quickly added that he would have been going“less than one mile per hour” and would not have blownthrough. I said I would always stop. The difference it wouldmake in any trip would be insignificant. We both looked atSteve. “You know” he said, “I can completely stop mymotorcycle for a second or two without putting down afoot.” I knew that Steve had some experience riding trialsbikes but I wondered if he actually could do that on hisdual purpose scooter. Brian nodded and said he could too.Steve looked at me and smiled. I sure as heck know that Icouldn’t.After lunch we mounted up and prepared to ride back tothe neighborhood. On the way there is an empty grocerystore building and parkinglot and so I signaled andturned off onto the adjacentstreet. The guys followedme into the lot. Wedefined an imaginary stopsign and then I led off, trying to see if I could stopwithout putting my feetdown. I slowed to a snail’space and tried twice butwas unsuccessful despitestanding on the pegs andworking the forks. In fact Ispent many extra secondstrying to balance at zeromiles per hour than I wouldhave if I had just stoppedwith my foot down andstarted again. Steve thenrode to the line slowly andstopped. It wasn’t for more than a second or two but it wasa complete stop and his foot never touched the ground.Brian was next up and, with much revving of engine andcreeping of clutch, he almost dropped his bike. I’m sure thatriders more skilled than Brian or I could have probablymanaged it. Maybe if we had that trials riding experiencethat Steve did we could have pulled it off. On the otherhand it was much safer and much quicker to just roll up andstop completely. As we approach the summer riding seasonit is good to remember that practicing skills like slow speedmaneuvering and panic stops hone your riding abilities. It isalso worth your while to obey traffic control devices. Stop, really stop, at stop signs and don’t compromise stalesignals. The consequence of doing so may be a traffic citationor, God forbid, something more painful and expensive.

P a g e 10w w w . r a t - p a c k . c o mI N THE NEWSIn MotorcycleUSA’s 2013 Urban Cruiser Shootout, theTriumph Bonneville was declared the clear winnerover the Harley Sportster Iron 883 and the new StarBolt. “It left the other two competitors in the dust, both on the straights and in the turns. It has thestrongest brakes of the bunch and the smoothesttranny, too,” the review praised. “The Bonneville hasthe widest, most usable spread of power and allowsriders to wind it out more between shifts. Thisbecomes immediately evident right from first gear asthe Bonneville doesn’t sign off until just over 50 mph,”concluded the review. In a video accompanying thearticle, the editors expound on how much theBonneville stands out from the others. Madson’s final thoughts on the 2013 TriumphBonneville sums it up well. “I was actually quite impressed with the Triumph. It had been acouple years since I’ve ridden the Bonnie, and it’s a great standard/urban bike. HoughGroovy Surpriseswww.rideinoregon.us 503-614-0240pnw.motosport@gmail.comA Pavement Groove Can Instantly Wrest Balance Out of Your ControlYou’re out for a spin on a sunny afternoon. You head for your favorite scenic back road, eagerto get away from traffic and have a spirited ride through the countryside. You know that ridingin the city is dangerous for motorcyclists, so you watch the street far ahead to spot potential leftturners,an scrutinize driveways and alleyways for hidden cars about to pull out. It’s a relief tofinally get far away and be able to concentrate on the curves. You discover, however, that thepavement has taken a beating over the winter and you have to constantly dodge grooves andpotholes. You’re also surprised to find so many other vehicles on the road. A lot of other sightseers apparently had the sameidea as you. There isn’t a lot of distance between curves for passing but by closing up your following distance at the exits ofcorners, you can pass the gawkers quickly if there’s no oncoming traffic. At the moment, you’re anxious to get around theslow-moving minivan ahead, so you move up close, shift down to prepare for a quick pass, and focus on the oncoming laneas it comes into view. Suddenly, your front wheel swerves to the right and you instinctively wrestle the handlebars towardthe left. Before you can recover balance, the bike smashes onto its left side and you slam into the pavement. You can’t believethat two seconds ago you were in control of the bike and now youare sliding down the asphalt. Apparently your front tire locked onto theedge of a pavement groove and you lost control of balance. It is smart to watch for traffic and avoid passing until you can see there isno oncoming traffic, but whether in city traffic or on the back roads, youmust always maintain your awareness of surface hazards. If you observethat a rod is in need of repair, you should keep some distance between youand the car in front of you – even if it is a slow mover – to maintain yourview of the road surface.(Printed with permission of the author)
