..Classnotes 1966-2, page 7Seigle, Murray, and Helkie on Hand toWitness Coach K's Historic 904 th WinBobby Seigle sent an inspiring report of his visitto Duke for Coach K's 904 th basketball victory.Dan Schrage, '67, Bill Helkie, Dick Murray, and Bobby Seigle as well as later yeargraduates had center court seats in the “benchsection.” Matt Brown, '79, from Mike's (CoachK) first team at West Point, along with TomValero, '76, and team captain; Vernon Crocker,'76, Dan Keefe, '76, and Joe Barto, '78, wereDan Schrage, Bill Helkie, Dick Murray, and there to present Mike with a game ball fromBobby Seigle attend Duke/Georgia Tech Victory #1 at Army (Army 56, Lehigh 29) andFootball on day after Coach K's 904 th win Mike's Duke team had a matching ball (whatelse?) from Victory #903 in Madison Square Garden on November 15, 2011. Tommy Valerowas the first team captain for Mike at West Point, and the Duke co-captains were Seth Curryand Ryan Kelly. The celebration took place at center court following the game where thePresident of Duke, Richard Broadhead, related several superlatives that defined Mike'sperformance to this point in coaching. “You can do things well; exceedingly well; better thanothers; and then the best there ever has been in achieving, now, 904 wins—but rememberthat you achieved this goal and never won a single one of those games yourself—it was yourplayers that won the games; certainly, it is obvious that they would not have won so many hadyou not been so accomplished at what you chose to do with your life. We would like toremember you for all this success; and for being a leaderamong leaders in today's world; but most of all, here atDuke, we remember you because you are a great teacherat a great university. Tom Butters, the AD who hired Mikeand stuck with him through those first three seasons of a37-48 record was introduced, and Mike actually got out ofhis chair and bowed toward him in a replay of how theCameron Crazies reacted to Mike as he was introducedafter the game. The crowd went wild! Mike recognized thatTom Butters believed in him more than Mike believed inhimself during those first couple of years.”

..Classnotes 1966-2, page 8The stunning time for all of us old guys there was when Mike told the crowd that there weresome special people in the crowd that had a huge impact on his development. He pointed towhere we were sitting and called out Bobby Seigle, Bill Helkie, Dick Murray, and DanSchrage, all upperclassmen at West Point when he entered as a Plebe. “These guys savedme a lot of trouble as a cadet and all the crowd laughed at how he described those earlydays; but when Mike pointed out that all of us served our country in combat, the crowd wentwild and gave us a lengthy standing ovation! Yes, even at Duke, they recognized the oldveterans in the crowd!” The former players then went to the locker room for a specialpresentation of letters written to Mike from several members of his teams at West Point. Mikewas on a roll and explained how close he felt to the “Brotherhood” from West Point; how thatinstitution defined him as a person and player; his relationship with Knight and how touching itwas in Madison Square Garden to have Coach Knight hug his neck and tell him, “Hey, Boy,you've done pretty well for a kid that couldn't shoot.” Mike went on to say that even coachingback at West Point had a toughening impact on his life—you represented an institution largerthan your team and were defined by theintangibles of selflessness and sacrifice forothers; and you tried to do that whilebuilding a basketball family within a welldefinedbureaucracy. He loves Duke butalways reminds himself that his first 73wins came at Army, and he wondered whyno one mentions that in all the hype overthis record. “He appreciated all of uscoming to Duke; wanted us to come backmore often and hugged and thanked eachof us individually for being there. It was atotally impromptu gathering for the four ofus and it was inspiring to listen to those“young grads” recount their days withCoach K.”Mike Cragg, Duke Assoc AD, BB Legacy-------->Fund, Matt Brown, WP '79 and wife, Jamie(don't have names of two younger men)
