Boost for tourism businesses The latest initiative from the Small Business Development Corporation (SBDC) is Tourism BOOST, a program designed for tourism businesses in Western Australia. With the high value of the Australian dollar making overseas travel more attractive for locals and impacting on the flow of incoming tourists, the SBDC has responded to the Following Government approval to proceed with work on site, City East Alliance held a ground breaking ceremony for the Great Eastern Highway upgrade project on Saturday, 25 June 2011. The ceremony was attended by Federal Infrastructure and Transport Minister Anthony Albanese, Western Australian Transport Minister Troy Buswell and City of Belmont Mayor Glenys Godfrey, as well as various project participants. The Alliance commenced site establishment works soon after and has since made solid progress in a number of construction areas. The majority of works have taken place in the area between Kooyong Road and Belmont Avenue, with fencing and barriers now installed and clearing nearing completion. These particular works are progressing throughout 6 Belmont Business Talk need for some practical, low cost ways for tourism businesses to make the most of all their opportunities. According to SBDC, having good knowledge of the industry, knowing how to make your business stand out from the crowd and knowing how to market your business online are the key components of a successful tourism business. Tourism BOOST was launched in August 2011 with workshops held in Perth, Fremantle and the Swan Valley. A full program of events will be held around the State over the coming months. Great Eastern Highway Upgrade the project site and are currently as far as Belgravia Street. The existing lighting between Kooyong Road and Belgravia Street needs to be removed and 69 temporary light poles have been installed. The wiring for this provisional lighting is currently underway and ties in with other service works at the western end of the site. In coming weeks the lighting between Belgravia Street and Tonkin Highway will be replaced in the same fashion. The existing lighting had to be removed as part of the road widening and the new lighting will be placed in the median later in the construction program. Services relocation works are progressing well with trenching and underboring taking place, as well as minor earthworks for the services corridor, around Brighton Road, heading east. An interactive, online guide for Tourism BOOST is also available on the SBDC website, so those who are unable to attend a workshop in person, can still benefit from the program. The project’s urban design has progressed significantly with the preferred options for noise walls and footpath paving now selected with stakeholder input. The wall and footpath designs will tie in with the overall theme, which was developed around the local Indigenous significance, specifically the Wagyl or Serpent. Earthworks recently commenced to the east of Brighton Road, for the new eastbound (river side) carriageway. Retaining walls will start to be erected at various locations over the coming months. Save our water with the EMRC Water Efficiency Auditing Service Looking for ways to save water and money in your organisation? You might be surprised how much you can save with just a good strategy in place. Since early 2011 Eastern Metropolitan Regional Council (EMRC) has undertaken water efficiency audits for various Councils, including City of Belmont, Shire of Mundaring and City of South Perth. EMRC would now like to extend this service to other interested organisations. With the current water shortage in Perth, water conservation and water use efficiency is a high profile issue. A water efficiency audit assesses water using appliances and practices, both indoor and outdoor and develops recommendations for improving water use efficiency. It provides: • An on site survey and assessment of water use sectors and management practices • Recommendations for improving water use efficiency • A range of practical and cost effective measures for reducing consumption, including cost benefit analysis and payback periods. EMRC Environmental Consultants have undertaken a Department of Water, Water Corporation and Curtin University accredited Water Efficiency Auditing course and achieved Water Corporation ‘Waterwise Auditor’ accreditation. Belmont Community Bank project seeking committee members Over 275 communities around Australia have a Community Bank branch and combined these branches have returned more than $58 million to their local communities. Belmont has the opportunity to be a part of this story. An active Steering Committee of business owners, association leaders and keen community members have been working on making the dream of opening a Community Bank branch in Belmont a reality. Under the Franchise Agreement, Bendigo Bank will provide the products and services, operating systems, marketing support, staff training and coverage of its banking license. Bendigo Bank will make the credit decisions assumes the risk and protects individual customer privacy. The local Directors of the new Community Bank Company will have no access to individuals’ records. The local Community Bank Company and Bendigo Bank will share the revenue equally from the banking business of the local branch. After operating expenses the remaining revenue will be available to distribute to local shareholders as dividends and to support local community outcomes in Belmont. Minister for Small Business visit - A win for small business suffering natural disasters Small Business Minister Senator the Hon Nick Sherry, officially launched the My business incubator ONLINE Natural Disaster Assistance Project at the Belmont Business Enterprise Centre (Belmont BEC) on Monday, 25 July 2011. A grant of $100,000 was offered to Belmont BEC under the Small Business Advisory Services – National Disaster Assistance (SBAS- NDA) program. Belmont BEC will provide the national assistance online through My business incubator which will deliver support via oneon-one telephone assistance, email, mentoring through web meetings and group training webinars. All services will be provided free or at a low cost by specialist business advisors in the creative industry, with assistance from specialist industry professionals. The SBAS-NDA program was set up to provide support to small businesses directly or indirectly impacted by the natural disasters that have occurred in Australia since October 2010. Webinars will be offered in disciplines such as business planning, finance, marketing, ecommerce, HR, websites and social media. Legal and accounting support will also be available to those needing specialist advice. The Belmont BEC is one of 25 not-for-profit business advisory organisations that have received Australian Government funding totaling $2.5 Million to assist small businesses affected by recent natural disasters across Australia. Small Business Minister, Senator the Hon Nick Sherry said, ”Belmont BEC was chosen to provide advisory services under the SBAS- NDA program because it is in the unique position of being able to provide its services online. No matter where small businesses are located, they will be able to access much needed help if they have been directly or indirectly affected by some of the tragic natural disasters that have occurred in the last 12 months.
