CLOSEDJan. 5- School Begins- 2 nd SemesterJan. 9- After School Program ResumesINs and OUTsLearning to GiveLast week I met the 7 th and 8 th graders at Wal-Mart togo on a “shopping spree”. I had agreed to be achaperone for this field trip and was looking forward tospending some time with my favorite age-group ofstudents. This was not a shopping spree. The students, guidedexpertly by their teachers, had raised money to helpfamilies in need. The shopping was not an all-outbuying frenzy, but carefully thought-out purchaseswith the intent of providing some basic food itemswhile also giving some fun to children. The groupthat I was assisting split into two groups with oneheading for household items and toys while theother tackled the grocery aisles.Immediately the checklists and the calculators cameout. The group knew they had $100 to spend, whichcould go as high as $110, since Wal-Mart had agreedto grant them a 10% discount on their purchases. Iwas so impressed how the middle schoolers debatedeach purchase with cost and effect in mind. Theydidn’t want to waste money on name brand items, but they also thought through how the gift wouldbe received and perceived by the recipients. This isnot only high level thinking – but critical feeling. These young people were empathizing and puttingthemselves in the shoes of a needy family – sayingthings like, “Well if they are really hungry and shorton food, then they won’t really need a jar of pickles, they need a bag of potatoes – or better yet a bunchof flour!” Then the diet banter continued as theywanted to get the best nutritional bang for the buck.A number of other customers noticed thecalculators, overheard the deliberations & asked mewhere we came from and what we were doing. Icould proudly respond, “They are from RehobothChristian Middle School, they raised money to helplocal families and are making sure that money getsspent wisely and goes as far as possible.”There are countless ways that teachers at RCS areguiding our children into a spirit of giving. Youshould be proud of this school and proud of yourchildren. I certainly am.Carol Bremer-Bennett, Managing DirectorBUILDING BRIDGES
