Viacalle San Jerónimo, we reachCALLE 31 DE AGOSTO [3],the only street still standingafter the devastating fire of1813 and recently chosenby the New York Times asone of the top streets inEurope in terms of beautyand cuisine. It hides thePlaza de la Trinidad, a regularhaunt for traditional sportscontests and concerts.Inside the Old Town, streetsbrim with life, as an endlessflow of people pass through.As the sun goes down, barsand restaurants fill up withpeople. This isthe most popular hillside in thecity. It is an essential part ofSan Sebastián’s physiognomyand its urban singularity. It isboth a natural wall thatprotects the city against theelements and a maze of paths,alleys and charming spots.Right on the top, you’ll find LaMota Castle built in the 12century, a basic part of thetown’s defences. On thesummit, the Sacred Heartmonument is the only placefrom which you can see allthree of the city’s beaches.That alone is worth the climb.SAN TELMO MUSEUMDropping down the stepsinto the Plaza de Zuloaga,you’ll come across the SANTELMO MUSEUM [8], aformer 16th centuryDominican convent,renovated and extended in2011 with an avant-gardebuilding.The Old Town is home to aMARKET CALLED “LABRETXA” [9]. As an easygoing,wide beach shelteredfrom the big waves, it’s ideal fora peaceful family day out. Ithas all the services you’ll need,with rocks for kids to search forcrabs and is swimming distancefrom the island of Santa Clara.MOUNTIGELDO1 4ANTIGUOROYAL BOAT CLUBIsland ofSanta ClaraOndarretabeach2MiramarPalaceMIRAMAR PARK [3] perhaps hasthe most extraordinary view of thecity. Hundreds andthousands of visitors lean onthe famous promenaderailings for a photo with thesea behind them, unhurriedlystaring at this hypnotic bay,protected by Mount Igeldoand Urgull and by the Islandof Santa Clara. Then theytake a seat at an open aircafé to enjoy the view or godown on the sand to strollalong 1300 metres of beach,enjoying the breeze and itsfine, white sand.The end of the port leads onto the PASEO NUEVO [7],circumnavigating MountUrgull, closed in bad weatheras the amazing waves usuallycome right over the sea walls.You’ll soon come to theCONSTRUCCIÓN VACÍA (TheEmpty Building) [8], by JorgeOteiza.Paseo Nuevo finishes up atthe River Urumea that wecross using the ZURRIOLABRIDGE [9], in the front line ofthis eternal war between SanSebastián and the strongtides. Waves break against itspillars and splash its moderniststreet lamps.ZURRIOLA BEACH FROM MONPÁSOpposite there is theCONFERENCE HALL ANDAUDITORIUM KURSAAL [10].The architect, Rafael Moneo,designed it as two rocks juttingout to sea.The ZURRIOLA PROMENADE runsalongside the beach [11]hugging the Gros neighbourhoodand reaching Monpás Point, atthe eastern end of the city. Thisis a lively beach with a younger,non conformist vibe. This iswhere surfers come to catchtheir waves every day of the year,never mind the weather. Thewaves never tire and neither dothe surfers.The sculpture by NéstorBasterretxea, PALOMA DE LA PAZ(Dove of Peace)[12] stands herethereby completing the city’sthird sculptural axis, in line withthe works by Chillida and Oteiza.3from ElpeinedelVientoto MonpásHuman beings walkat a speed of 6 kmper hour. Let’s go!BASQUE COASTGEOPARKThe flysch on the cliffs between Debaand Zumaia shows us 60 million years ofgeological evolution.THE BASQUEMATTERHORN ANDBIPOLAR MEADOWSARALARThe Aralar mountain range lies in the southeast of Gipuzkoa stretching out into Navarra.At the prow of this rock, the majestic shapeof Txindoki (1,331 m) represents the mosteasily recognised picture postcard view ofthe Gipuzkoa mountain, just like theMatterhorn in the Alps, and it symbolisesthe untamed geography of this land.Despite its undeniable dominance, behindTxindoki there are enormous rangesreaching sometimes even greater heights,held up by rock buttresses in all directions. Itis a singular, diaphanous, sublime place withtwo personalities: its white and inhospitableranges in winter contrasting with their fresh,green counterparts in summer. Tens ofwalkers go up the valleys and cross thismegalithic and pastoral plateau wherehorses and sheep graze. Mountaineers andwalkers greet each other as they crosspaths. Clouds drift by overhead. It is the onlygranite range in all of the Basque Country andthe first natural element that emerged fromthe water 300 million years ago. Although itmight not seem so simple, you can actuallytrek along its summit ridge following a normalroute. The three gigantic humps are calledIrumugarrieta, Txurrumurru and Erroilbide,which is the highest at 832m. You can alsowalk out to the megalithic monument atOieleku.At the foot of the rock, we find the Arditurrimines that were intensely active from the IronAge onwards, reaching a peak in the Romanperiod. Silver, lead and fluorite were minedhere until it closed in 1984. This amazing routeruns 800 m below sea level.THE SILENCE OFTHE BEECH TREESPAGOETAThe ancient beech trees that carpet thePagoeta summits gave their name to thisnatural park you can enter via Aia,between Orio and Zarautz. The Iturranhomestead, a beautiful 14 th centurybuilding made entirely out of oak, marksthe park’s entrance and you’ll find abotanical garden there with 5000 plantspecies from different corners of theglobe.
