At present, Washington's early<br />
learning programs (including<br />
Head start and the state's<br />
early childhood education and<br />
Assistance Program) serve only half of eligible low-income<br />
children, leaving more than 14,000 children un-served each<br />

When I read this statistic, I was both saddened and energized. Sad because I<br />
know from raising my own children the importance of excellent early learning<br />
programs; energized because I know <strong>Camp</strong> <strong>Fire</strong> <strong>USA</strong> is helping to fill the void and<br />
provide these critical services to our community.<br />
<strong>Camp</strong> <strong>Fire</strong> <strong>USA</strong>’s broad array of programs and services is impressive; just take a<br />
look at the following list:<br />
• Environmental Education<br />
• Group programs for all ages that are fully inclusive<br />
• Community Family Clubs<br />
• Day <strong>Camp</strong><br />
• Summer <strong>Camp</strong><br />
• Saturday Clubs for families with children with disabilities<br />

• Licensed Child Care<br />
• Little Stars<br />
What is more striking, however, is the quality of <strong>Camp</strong> <strong>Fire</strong>’s services. I<br />
believe <strong>Camp</strong> <strong>Fire</strong> <strong>USA</strong> is unparalleled in their levels of care, concern, passion<br />
and excellence.<br />
This is the reason why I have committed my time and effort to ensuring that <strong>Camp</strong><br />
<strong>Fire</strong> <strong>USA</strong> <strong>Central</strong> <strong>Puget</strong> <strong>Sound</strong> Chapter succeeds. It has been my pleasure to<br />
work alongside the 32 other dedicated members of the board—engaged citizens<br />
representing the best of our city. Fund development, financial stewardship and<br />
program excellence are at the forefront of all our activity. We could not do this<br />
without you—our donors and friends. While this Annual Report is meant to inform,<br />

Did you know that, “Less than half of the<br />
state’s incoming kindergarteners are adequately<br />
prepared to succeed in school, and students in<br />
lower income communities tend to be even less<br />
prepared?” (League of Education Voters, 2006)<br />
This and other information regarding the health<br />
and welfare of Washington State children are<br />
on the pages of our <strong>2007</strong> Annual Report. We<br />
have provided these quotes for two reasons.<br />
First, to keep you informed of why our goal—We Build More Than <strong>Camp</strong>fires—is so<br />
important for our young people. And second, to let you know that as supporters of<br />
<strong>Camp</strong> <strong>Fire</strong>’s mission, you can take pride in having made a real difference in the lives<br />
of children and families.<br />
We can say with pride that <strong>2007</strong> was another stellar year for <strong>Camp</strong> <strong>Fire</strong> <strong>USA</strong><br />
<strong>Central</strong> <strong>Puget</strong> <strong>Sound</strong> <strong>Council</strong>. Below, we share a few highlights of <strong>2007</strong> programs<br />
and services.<br />
In <strong>2007</strong>, <strong>Camp</strong> <strong>Fire</strong> engaged 1,231 youth, ages 11-18, through the Youth Volunteer<br />
corps (YVc). They gave their communities 10,098 hours of service through 221<br />
different projects. This team-based community service program provides future<br />
citizens a positive learning experience while they help others. Participants designed<br />
projects that help the homeless, the elderly, and the environment, and partnered<br />
with a whole host of community organizations.<br />
In our 19 community family clubs, families join together to share dinner,<br />
conversation, and fun. The warm and caring interactions fostered by the Community<br />
Family Club carry enormous potential for children’s success in school and in<br />
life. During the Club meetings adults and children have a unique opportunity to<br />
participate in a positive, support group for family interaction and problem solving.<br />
Studies show that a caring and supportive family and community are critical to a<br />
child’s success in school.<br />
Every year, we touch the lives of hundreds of children through resident camp.<br />
<strong>Camp</strong> <strong>Fire</strong> Resident <strong>Camp</strong>s are exceptional because they are incredibly inclusive – it<br />
is our priority to extend the camp experience to children from families with limited<br />
resources, foster care, and children with developmental disabilities. <strong>Camp</strong>ers have<br />
time to play, make friends, explore, and learn without being judged or singled out.<br />
Everyone gets on the same ferry (“Da Boata”), sleeps in the same cabins, and<br />
hikes the same trails. <strong>Camp</strong>ers experience positive interaction with the whole<br />
community of children, not just the few who live in their neighborhood. Everyone<br />
benefits. Everyone learns.<br />
