Signs for Safety4The Ithaca Police Department and Ithaca PublicSchools have a longstanding partnership toprovide crossing guards at key crosswalks neareach school building. For years, the crossingguards have been equipped with handheldstop signs and reflective, high-visibility vests. However, there were still occasional “close calls,”where drivers would not notice the crossingguard until the last second, or would zoom bywithout ever seeing them.Teresa King, who has served as a crossingguard since 2009, saw her life flash beforeher eyes multiple times while standing in themiddle of Business Route US-127 on the northside of Ithaca. “There were many times whenI would see a car coming straight at me, notTeresa King,Crossing Guardslowing down, and I would just have to step out of its path. On a couple ofoccasions, I had a car side-mirror brush my arm. It was scary for me, andfor the kids I am out there to protect.”The Ithaca Police Department sought assistance from the Gratiot CountyCommunity Foundation to secure high-visibility, LED-lighted, superreflectivehandheld stop signs. The flashing, high-intensity lights catch theeye of motorists much earlier, and the energy efficient technology meansfewer battery changes.“I love our new stop sign. It makes me feel much more secure to walk outinto the street and know most drivers will notice it long before they get tooclose,” says Teresa. All five of Ithaca’s crossing guards are now equipped with the LED stopsigns, keeping dozens of Ithaca Public Schools students safe each day ontheir commute to school.4
