A Kid, A Cow, A Community5Mary Smith; Cooper the Cow; and Dylan Macha,son of Patty and Dan MachaSince GratiotCounty Fairfor Youth hasbeen experiencingsteady growthwith increasedfair projectsand exhibitors,the need for anew livestockbarn in Almabecame acute.The Foundationwas able toaward a grant of$5,000 towardconstruction of thenew barn.Fair Manager Brian Gardner said excitement built as volunteers and exhibitorswatched the Livestock Exhibition Barn go up. It was completed in time for the 2011fair in August. He pointed out that the new facility will allow exhibitors to bettercare for their large animals,and it can be used for learningexperiences at various timesin the year. The Gratiot CountyCommunity Foundation granthelped add another new buildingto the fair complex.Gratiot County Fair for YouthLivestock Exhibition Barn5
About ten years ago,the Gratiot CountyPlayers upgraded the soundsystem in their theatreto better distribute thesound of performances.Despite this improvement,some patrons who hada degree of hearingimpairment could not hearperformances.I Heard Every Word6Thanks to a grant from theFoundation, the Playerswere able to purchase andinstall an assisted listeningsystem with four listeningunits for its 2011-2012 season.Sue Goffnett (left), Stephanie Leppien (right)demonstrating the assisted listening devicePlayers President Doug Ballard said, “The assisted listening devices havebeen used at every performance since installation. As time goes on, morepeople will become aware of them, and their use will increase. Those whohave not been able to hear everything from the stage will now havethe opportunity to hear what therest of us hear. Live theater is avisual and auditory experience,and now everyone can have thebest of both.”Gratiot County Players6
