He wrotethe music for three ballets: Swan Lake (1877),The Sleeping Beauty (1890) and The Nutcracker(1892) and to this day these remain the mostpopular ballet scores of all time.LEV IVANOVICH IVANOV became achoreographer by command of his superiors, withthe terms of his agreement such that his choreographywas always subject to Petipa’s final approval. Hisbest-known contributions to ballet are The Nutcracker(1892) and the ‘white’ acts of Swan Lake (1894-95);amongst others he also choreographed versions of LaFille mal Gardée and Coppélia.2PAGEMARIUS PETIPA began his legendary career asa choreographer after he moved to St Petersburgin 1847. Arguably the most influentialchoreographer of 19th century classical ballet, hecreated Swan Lake, The Sleeping Beauty, Don Quixote,La Bayadère and The Nutcracker amongst others. Hechoreographed some 50 ballets for the ImperialTheatres in Russia and also re-staged Paquita,Coppelia, Giselle and Le Corsaire from the Frenchrepertoire; his versions of these classics continueto form the basis of international productionsthat we know today.References: Ballet Notes, Ballet Metropolitan, Ohio USA (www.balletmet.org). SWAN LAKE - THE GRADUATE COLLEGE OF DANCE 2009Swan LakeTanja Graafland with Lara Kuhlenthaland Letita Muller, PACT Ballet 1993.Dawn Weller in Swan Lake Act IV. PACT Ballet, Civic Theatre 1983.Natalia Makarova as Odette and Anthony Dowell asPrince Siegfried in PACT Ballet’s Swan Lake, 1976.theBalletSWAN LAKE is arguably the most famous and one of the more frequently performedballets in the world. Based on German folk tale elements, it tells the story of the magicianVon Rothbart turning Princess Odette into a swan. She can only be returned to humanform when a man swears true love for her. Prince Siegfried meets her at the lake onenight, falls in love and vows to rescue her. However Von Rothbart, disguised as aSpanish Prince, tricks Siegfried into asking to marry his beguiling daughter Odile. On discoveringthis trickery, Siegfried rushes off to the lake to beg Odette’s forgiveness. When the evil VonRothbart arrives at the lake, Siegfried tears a wing from him and breaks the spell. Odette resumesher human form and is reunited with Siegfried.Swan Lake, choreographed by Reisinger and with music by Tchaikovsky, premiered in 1877 atthe Bolshoi Theatre. The ballet was extensively reworked by Petipa and Ivanov during 1894-95 forTchaikovsky’s memorial performances at the Maryinsky Theatre, becoming the definitive versionthat we know today. In most productions, the roles of Odette and Odile are played by the same ballerina – theextreme contrast between Odette’s romantic purity and Odile’s seductive virtuosity makes this dualrole one of the most challenging in a ballerina’s repertory.THIS PRODUCTIONACT II Prince Siegfried comes across the swans on the shores of a lake. He does not know that theyare maidens transformed by the Von Rothbart, but as he watches they regain their human form. PrincessOdette tells him the secret of the spell: they are maidens only at midnight and only the love anddevotion of a man can give them their freedom. The Prince falls in love with Odette and vows he willrelease her from the magician’s spell. Von Rothbart, watching from the shadows, is determined to forceSiegfried to break his vow.ACT III The Queen’s court gathers to celebrate Siegfried’s coming of age. His mother bids her sonto choose a bride, but due to his love for Odette and his promise to her, he refuses. Von Rothbart, disguised as a Spanish Prince, appears accompanied by his daughter Odile, whom he has transformed toresemble Odette. Believing her to be the Swan Princess, Siegfried tells his mother that he has chosen heras a bride. Von Rothbart is jubilant; Siegfried has broken his promise to Odette. Realising that he hasbeen deceived, the Prince rushes in despair to the lake.Reference: PACT Ballet, Swan Lake 1996 programme compiled by Jonathan Hurwitz.3PAGE
