TEACHER OF PE AND GAMES (AND GENERAL SUBJECTS)JOB DESCRIPTIONTo support the Head of Games and the Heads of Departments with a view toimplementing agreed policy, which reflects the ethos of the whole school.To promote the good name of <strong>Priory</strong> Prep <strong>School</strong> in the community.Attitudes and preparedness• To keep the daily register in accordance with the latest DfSE policy asrequired• To inform the school office of regular absences, late arrivals• As a class teacher, to be aware of the teaching/learning in which thechildren are being involved• To have appropriate regard to the abilities and needs of all children in theclass• To have a working knowledge of the school’s aims and objectives and tobe prepared to make a contribution to the development of curriculumguidelines• To work with all members of the school staff as a team member• To be willing to apply different approaches in structuring learningopportunities for children in your class, in line with the agreed priorities fordevelopment within the school• To be prepared to teach a wide range of subjects in the curriculum, ifnecessary• To undertake lunchroom and play duties as requested and cover forabsent colleagues• To ensure that the Homework policy is adhered to• To plan and review all lessons effectivelyClassroom organization, display and planning• To organize the classroom in a way that is conducive to an effectivelearning process resulting in a well-ordered, stimulating and attractiveenvironment• Appropriate equipment available• Equipment should be neatly stored and labelled enabling a visiting teacherto cope easily with the class


• Learning resources grouped, clearly labelled and stored in a way thatensures their accessibility to children• Working displays, which reflect the tasks in hand, presented in a variety offorms• Evidence of children who have been trained to fetch and return their ownequipment• Involvement in ordering books and materials• To establish a good working relationship with all class assistants and toensure that they make a full and useful contribution to the school• Children’s work should be displayed and regularly changed• Regular use of audio-visual materials should be reflected in generalclassroom organization and provision of ICT• Particular care should be given to the readiness of the classroom at thebeginning of the school day and the tidiness of the classroom at the end ofthe day• Plan effectively for the class as part of a team, to include assessments ofchildren’s development in order to record and report their progress.• To submit six weekly plans (medium term) to Heads of Department/DOS• To submit short term plans, evaluations and assessments to Heads ofDepartment/DOS weeklyPastoral careIt is a prima facie requirement of all teachers that their major responsibility is forthe academic and social welfare of children in their care. It is the duty of allteachers to ensure that the academic and pastoral care of the children is of thehighest standard, i.e. to provide a well-balanced and happy education so thateach child reaches his full potential in all areas and to ensure that the childrenare well-disciplined, well-mannered and considerate.Certain facets require emphasis, e.g.• Ensuring each child reaches his academic potential• Looking for signs of stress and/or emotional imbalance• Liaising regularly with parents• Keeping the Head of Department (and where necessary, the Headmaster)informed of concern over any individual children, academic, social,pastoral, medical, etc.• To enable children to develop the right attitudes, skills and concepts in allaspects of the curriculum within integrated learning situations as and whenappropriate, matched to age, aptitude and ability• To organize children appropriately in class and small group activities inkeeping with the immediate objects• To ensure children are given opportunities of group work, i.e. they worktogether at a specific task which facilitates interactive learning, thesharing of ideas with the need to arrive at conclusions


• To plan patterns of working in such a way that is likely to increase theirindependence and efficiency• To develop attitudes of care, control and co-operation relevant tochildren’s corporate responsibility for the environment and its resources;to delegate responsibilities appropriately to children• To maintain a standard of discipline in line with the wishes of the Head ofDepartment• To safeguard the health and safety of the children in the class andassume pastoral responsibility for them• To encourage children to value themselves and others in the quality andnature of their learning• To administer medication when required e.g. Epi-Pen, diazepam.Reports and teacher standards• To monitor and evaluate children’s progress by keeping an appropriatesystematic record of their achievements over a week/term/year dependingon context, thus ensuring continuity and progression• To ensure that he/she is up to date in terms of current curriculumdevelopment and professional practice• To attend all staff meetings and events deemed necessary for thesuccessful functioning of the school (parents’ sessions, sports days,concerts etc.)• To co-operate fully with the school’s appraisal system, accepting that it willact as a vehicle for professional self-development.
