Rehabilitation of an egg-shapedinterceptor in HildesheimBerlin-Steglitzstorm sewerThe first sewers were built in thenorth German town of Hildesheim in1860. Given that the municipal networkwas designed as a combinedsewer, egg-shaped pipes were theoptimum solution for many sections. The interceptor requiring rehabilitationin the Langer Garten road was installedin 1906 and made of concretewith a bottom lining. An egg-shapedpipe with a cross-section of DN 800/1200, its bottom depths ranged from4.42 m to 9.34 m. It is primarily usedas a storm sewer for an industrial area, but wastewater from a paper mill isalso discharged into the pipe at times.Following sewer inspection, thedamage was classified as „old pipecondition II“ to ATV M 127.A groundwater level of 2.60 m abovethe bottom of the old sewer also hadto be taken into consideration for thestructural dimensioning of the liner.Egg-shaped DN 680/1050 pipes witha wall thickness of 10 mm wereselected for rehabilitation. They wereinserted separately into the oldsewer through a short shaft at theend of the relining section. Afterbeing joined, each pipe was preventedfrom floating at the crown ofthe old sewer. The lengths of 2.0 m and 3.0 mcombined with the simple jointingsystem enabled the liner pipes to belaid rapidly. As a result, installationwas completed within six days. Thestorm sewers from the variousproperties were connected to theinterceptor with laminate hand layup. To check leak tightness, the linerwas then filled with water. Finally, theremaining annulus between the linerpipe and old sewer was completelyfilled with special cement (grout).Intensive use and high traffic loadsin the Berlin district of Steglitz-Lichterfelde Ost resulted indeterioration of a concrete stormwatersewer (hood cross-section1560x1770 mm). In view of thedamage detected and the loadconditions, the HOBAS NC Line Pipeswere calculated on the basis of „oldpipe condition II“ to ATV M 127 Part2. They were then manufacturedusing a calibration template that wasa replica of the old pipe shape. Twometerlengths were laid in the straightsections of the sewer and one-meterlengths in the curved sections.HOBAS NC Line Products DN 680/1050 forRelining stored in front of the access shaftHOBAS NC Line pipe installationThe HOBAS pipes were joined withpush-on couplings bonded in place bylaminate hand lay-up. Precautionswere also taken during installation toprevent flotation. After tightnesstesting to DIN EN 1610 procedure„W“, grout was injected section bysection.View into the rehabilitated sewerRehabilitated sewer with DN 200 laminatedinlet5
