Getting your message across
The growing use of electronic marketing can help
recruiters to get their message across to students. We
encourage companies to use their websites to convey
the messages they wish regarding their company’s
image as a student gathers information. Students
also review a company’s activity via the media, thus
companies may find benefit in paying attention to the
coverage of your organization in the media.
Electronic marketing can never take the place of a human
face to fully portray what it would be like to work for
a company. Thus we encourage companies to visit
students on campus, and to take advantage of RSM’s
summer project program, inviting students into their
companies for an eight-to 12-week period. We would
also encourage companies to invite students in prior to
their summer project for a day’s work shadowing with a
member of your organization. Companies may also
benefit utilizing their staff who are RSM graduates.
Reviewing on-campus company presentations in
particular, we are delighted at the increased interest in
these, as well as attendance at the annual RSM Careers
Fair. But we must stress that companies need to ensure
that their employees who are presenting on campus are
well-trained; it is too easy for students to be put off
companies when those presenting are unsure of
themselves.
Compensation
While salaries show a cross-industry average increase
of over 10% on the corresponding figure for 1999, it is
interesting to note the bigger increase in the range and
value of fringe benefits offered. Companies need to be
aware that they can be more imaginative in their offer
packages to attract students, over and above a base
salary. It is anticipated that this trend may well continue.
