Getting your message across<br />
The growing use <strong>of</strong> electronic marketing can help<br />
recruiters to get their message across to students. We<br />
encourage companies to use their websites to convey<br />
the messages they wish regarding their company’s<br />
image as a student gathers information. Students<br />
also review a company’s activity via the media, thus<br />
companies may find benefit in paying attention to the<br />
coverage <strong>of</strong> your organization in the media.<br />
Electronic marketing can never take the place <strong>of</strong> a human<br />
face to fully portray what it would be like to work for<br />
a company. Thus we encourage companies to visit<br />
students on campus, and to take advantage <strong>of</strong> RSM’s<br />
summer project program, inviting students into their<br />
companies for an eight-to 12-week period. We would<br />
also encourage companies to invite students in prior to<br />
their summer project for a day’s work shadowing with a<br />
member <strong>of</strong> your organization. Companies may also<br />
benefit utilizing their staff who are RSM graduates.<br />
Reviewing on-campus company presentations in<br />
particular, we are delighted at the increased interest in<br />
these, as well as attendance at the annual RSM Careers<br />
Fair. But we must stress that companies need to ensure<br />
that their employees who are presenting on campus are<br />
well-trained; it is too easy for students to be put <strong>of</strong>f<br />
companies when those presenting are unsure <strong>of</strong><br />
themselves.<br />
Compensation<br />
While salaries show a cross-industry average increase<br />
<strong>of</strong> over 10% on the corresponding figure for 1999, it is<br />
interesting to note the bigger increase in the range and<br />
value <strong>of</strong> fringe benefits <strong>of</strong>fered. Companies need to be<br />
aware that they can be more imaginative in their <strong>of</strong>fer<br />
packages to attract students, over and above a base<br />
salary. It is anticipated that this trend may well continue.
