2 - Any comments and/or background informati<strong>on</strong><br />

During <strong>the</strong> reporting period 932 samples c<strong>on</strong>taining 61 different a.i. from all pesticide classes and<br />

formulati<strong>on</strong> types were analyzed. 336 <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se samples were analyzed as part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> m<strong>on</strong>itoring<br />

programme. Methods used for <strong>the</strong> determinati<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> active ingredient c<strong>on</strong>tent are <str<strong>on</strong>g>CIPAC</str<strong>on</strong>g> and in-house


<str<strong>on</strong>g>CIPAC</str<strong>on</strong>g> xxx<br />

methods. GC-FID and HPLC –UV are <strong>the</strong> main techniques used for <strong>the</strong> analysis <strong>of</strong> pesticides. LC-<br />

MS-MS and GC-MS-MS techniques were used for <strong>the</strong> identificati<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> illegal and counterfeit<br />

pesticides, for parallel import pesticides and spraying soluti<strong>on</strong>s. Optical microscopy was also<br />

employed for <strong>the</strong> inspecti<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> parallel import pesticides c<strong>on</strong>taining microspheres.<br />

596 samples were treated seeds and analyzed for floating dust (Heubach test) and loading.<br />

The Laboratory <strong>of</strong> <strong>Quality</strong> C<strong>on</strong>trol <strong>of</strong> Pesticides, <strong>of</strong> Benaki Phytopathological Institute is <strong>the</strong><br />

Central Official Laboratory in Greece, designated for <strong>the</strong> quality c<strong>on</strong>trol <strong>of</strong> plant protecti<strong>on</strong> products.<br />

Analysis <strong>of</strong> envir<strong>on</strong>mental samples (soil and sediment) with LC-MS-MS, GC-MS-MS and GC-ECD,<br />

for <strong>the</strong> determinati<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> pesticide residues is also <strong>on</strong>e <strong>of</strong> its resp<strong>on</strong>sibilities. The laboratory is also<br />

resp<strong>on</strong>sible for <strong>the</strong> evaluati<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> identity, physical and chemical properties, method <strong>of</strong> analysis (ppps,<br />

residues) and fate and behaviour for registrati<strong>on</strong> purposes under nati<strong>on</strong>al and EU legislati<strong>on</strong>.<br />

The laboratory is accredited in accordance to ELOT EN ISO/IEC 17025:2005, by <strong>the</strong><br />

Hellenic Accreditati<strong>on</strong> System SA<br />

last audit: 31-01-2012) in:<br />

1. Determinati<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> active ingredient c<strong>on</strong>tent <strong>of</strong> plant protecti<strong>on</strong> products by HPLC-<br />

UV technique (according to <strong>the</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>CIPAC</str<strong>on</strong>g> methods <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> current issue).<br />

2. Determinati<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> active ingredient c<strong>on</strong>tent <strong>of</strong> plant protecti<strong>on</strong> products by GC-FID<br />

technique (according to <strong>the</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>CIPAC</str<strong>on</strong>g> methods <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> current issue).<br />

3. Determinati<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> emulsi<strong>on</strong> characteristics and <strong>the</strong> re-emulsi<strong>on</strong> ability (according to<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>CIPAC</str<strong>on</strong>g>).<br />

The Laboratory was inspected in 8 th May 2012 by <strong>the</strong> Food and Veterinary Office<br />

(FVO) <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> European Commissi<strong>on</strong>. The results <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> inspecti<strong>on</strong> will be published <strong>on</strong>line in<br />

due time.<br />

Federal Agency for <strong>the</strong> Food Safety –AFSCA (Gembloux-Belgium) for <strong>the</strong> determinati<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

active ingredient c<strong>on</strong>tent and physical properties.
