EASTSYDNEYBULLDOGSPlayersDELWYN, LEON, STORMBOY,WINSTON, GALVESTON &DARCYThis year we welcome back to EastSydney Bulldogs Delwyn, Leon,Stormboy and our latest recruits,Winston, Galveston and Darcy.East Sydney Bulldogs are lucky enough to have6 very culturally special players on our books.Delywn Wunungmurra, Leon Wunungmurra,Winston Yunupingu, Stormboy Mununggurr,Galveston Gannembarr and Darcy Hookerwho all live in Arnhem land, in the far North-East of the Northern Territory. A place whereEnglish is the second language and communityand culture is paramount. Whilst Winston or‘Winny’ hails from the Gove Peninsula whichhas the area’s main airport and has a populationof about 4000 people, Del, Leon, Stormboy,Galveston and Darcy come from a smallcommunity named Gapuwiyak. Gapuwiyak is acommunity about 2 hours from Gove, home toabout 1000 people. Once a week it is servicedby a barge from Darwin that replenishes thelocal shop as well as provides equipmentneeded for the school and community centre.Whilst these communities are a world awayfrom Paddington, the boys are all boarders atThe Scots College on Indigenous Scholarships.Mentor families such as the Sprys and Harapinstake care of the boys and ensure they feel athome and have a family to rely on.Whilst the city lifestyle was hard at first, theboys have settled in extremely well and partakein school sports such as Rugby and Basketballand are valued members of our Bulldogscommunity. Delwyn and Stormboy are both intheir second year at the Dogs, Delwyn havingplayed in the successful Under 17’s GrandFinal. In the game he made a game saving‘bonecruncher’ of a tackle and set up one ofthe winning goals. Whilst Leon only played 3games for the Under 15’s due to his Glengarrycommitments (Stormboy is there this year), heand Winston have both made a large impacton the Under 17’s team. Winston has caughtthe eye of the UNSW Under 19’s coach withhis strength and speed and Leon’s skill andcharisma made his selected as captain of theside in a one-off trial against Waverley College.Galveston and Darcy are experiencing their firstyear with the Bulldogs in the Under 14s andare certainly adding adding plenty of excitingfootball to the season. These indigenousplayers have added flair, skill and a great dealof excitement to both the Under 17’s, Under15’s and Under 14s age groups for the pasttwo years and they are brilliant to watch. Itcouldn’t be done without the assistance of theMentor families, the organisation of Marelleand the help of team parents and coaches whotransport the boys to and from training andgames. If you get a chance to watch the under17’s play in 2015, keep an eye out for Winny,Del or Leon and prepare to be amazed!
