The Primary Sources for the LessonThe Primary SourcesDocument 1Information on the source: John Louis O’Sullivan, editor of The United States Magazine <strong>and</strong>Democratic Review, coined the phrase “manifest destiny” in 1845. Even earlier, however, he had begunexpressing the idea in very similar terms, as he does in these passages from “The Great Nation ofFuturity,” from The United States Magazine <strong>and</strong> Democratic Review, November 1839.The American people having derived their originfrom many other nations, <strong>and</strong> the Declaration ofNational Independence being entirely based onthe great principle of human equality, these factsdemonstrate at once our disconnected position asregards any other nation; that we have, in reality, butlittle connection with the past history of any of them,<strong>and</strong> still less with all antiquity, its glories, or its crimes.On the contrary, our national birth was the beginningof a new history…<strong>and</strong> so far as regards the entiredevelopment of the natural rights of man, in moral,political, <strong>and</strong> national life, we may confidently assumethat our country is destined to be the great nationof futurity…We have no interest in the scenes of antiquity, onlyas lessons of avoidance of nearly all their examples.The expansive future is our arena, <strong>and</strong> for our history.We are entering on its untrodden space, with thetruths of God in our minds, beneficent objects inour hearts, <strong>and</strong> with a clear conscience unsullied bythe past. We are the nation of human progress, <strong>and</strong>who will, what can, set limits to our onward march?Providence is with us, <strong>and</strong> no earthly power can. Wepoint to the everlasting truth on the first page of ournational declaration, <strong>and</strong> we proclaim to the millionsof other l<strong>and</strong>s, that “the gates of hell”—the powersof aristocracy <strong>and</strong> monarchy—“shall not prevailagainst it.”The far-reaching, the boundless future will be theera of American greatness.
