Dear CenterFriends, photo by Jonathan’s PortraitsA year in the life at The Center for EnrichedLiving can be summed up in three words,“community, life-long growth, and happiness.”In this report, we have attempted to illustrate whatthose three words mean to the quality of life for ourmembers. You will read about Becky, a shy youngwoman nearly a decade out of school, who foundher confidence and her independence throughparticipation in our REACH day program. There’sMegan, the high school student, who discovered newhobbies and interests and a well-rounded social lifein one of our neighborhood after-school programs. And Jay, a sociable man who has made many goodfriends at CEL and thrives on learning and havingnew experiences here and in the community. At CEL, we believe that learning is a life-longprocess that does not end when school ends. We alsobelieve in the strength and impact of community– connection to each other is what gives our livesmeaning, purpose and joy. We also know that“disability” is a label that should not define nor limitan individual’s potential. We keep raising the bar sothat our members can see that opportunities for arich and full life are within their grasp.communities. You’ll see in our financial statementthat our day to day operations are supportedprimarily through your generosity – not throughstate or federal funds. We manage and stretch everydollar to accommodate the needs of a demographicthat has few, if any, resources. Financialimpoverishment should not be the indicator for animpoverished life. In fact just the opposite occursat CEL. Your support brings a richness of life toBecky, Megan, Jay and all who come to CEL.We hope CEL’s 2011 Annual Report conveysthe impact you have made possible. We invite youto make an appointment to visit CEL – we wouldbe delighted to show you around and answer anyquestions you have about the important work thatyou help us do.We thank you on behalf of Becky, Megan and Jayfor your generous support that drives our mission.photo by Jonathan’s PortraitsAs you read through this report you will alsofind that CEL’s reach extends to more than 47Noel ElfantPresident, CEL Board of DirectorsHarriet LevyExecutive Director“We also know that ‘disability’define nor limit anis a label that should notindividual’s potential.”4 2011 Annual Report Letter from the President & Executive Director 5

Our AccomplishmentsPrograms during the 2010-2011 year continued to bedriven by our strategic plan and year three saw thecontinued development of our satellite after-schoolprograms and the ongoing growth of the REACH adultday program, among many other accomplishments. It has become clear that providing locallybasedafter-school programs is an optionthat families prefer. While most of our afterschoolsatellites involve high school students,we have also been successful in conductingthem for elementary and junior high schoolstudents. In 2011 we expanded our servicearea with the creation of a satellite servingthe Round Lake Area Schools. With start-upfunding from the Lake County CommunityFoundation and matching funds from localsources, we brought desperately neededafter-school support to 14 students and theirfamilies (our largest satellite yet). We continueto grow this program with a new satellitelocation beginning in the spring of 2012.Safety is our number onepriority. We have memberswith a wide range of abilities.CEL staff constantly evaluatesstaff-to-member ratios to bestmeet the needs of the members, especially those who requiremore support. As a result wehave added staff to programswhere that additional supportis needed. The economic climatehas significantly impactedmember families. It is themost common reasongiven for reducing theirparticipation in CEL activitiesor not re-registering forprograms. The requests forscholarships increased by14% from the previous year.Without turning anyonedown, we provided 200scholarships to individualstotaling $44,000, bothsignificant increases fromFY10 and increased to$50,000 in FY12.The Center on Wheels, in which we send staff into small grouphomes of residential agencies to conduct programs in the “house,”became a reality in 2011. This program allows us to serve themore severely disabled adults who – for physical, behavioral,or integrative reasons – are unable to be part of regular CELprograms. One outcome for the Center on Wheels has been totransition some of these participants into programming at CEL.8 2011 Annual Report Our Accomplishments 9

The Support Services Manager position was createdin 2010 resulting in development and implementationof quality assurance, customer service, stafftraining (including training on autism), outcomemeasurements, volunteers, outreach, accessibletransportation, disabilities training and safety. The Healthy Lifestyles programming continued to developthanks to a grant from The Baxter International Foundation. This exciting program features exercise and nutritioncoaching for members and staff. With consultation and stafftraining from fitness and nutrition experts, the programkicked-off in fall 2011.The REACH program experienced tremendous growth during itssecond year of operation. REACH saw a 45% increase to 16 participantsper 5-hour day, 5 days per week. REACH maximizes involvement inthe community. Participation has moved at a much faster pace than weinitially anticipated. The Wednesday evening program was designatedas “Agency Night” to provide lower costprogramming for adults living in residential facilities. Thanks to a grant from the Chicago CommunityTrust, Agency Night enabled CEL to provide theseresidents with life enrichment activities otherwiseunavailable to them.10 2011 Annual Report Our Accomplishments 11

Our ProgramsCEL is about social connections which are importantto the emotional and physical well-being for all of us.Recent studies have shown that social and humaninteractions have a direct correlation to a happier, longer, and healthier life. It is this social relevance that providesgreater meaning and purpose to our lives. The above holds true for people with developmental disabilities. Yet they have the greatestbarriers to enjoying a full life – experiencing isolation and exclusion that all too often leadsto regression of life skills, depression, poor health and overall poor quality of life.Young Adult & Adult ProgramsYoung adults and adults go bowling on Monday evenings, and participate in socialprograms on Wednesday and Friday evenings and Saturdays and Sundays. Our Wednesdaynight programs have been responsive to the needs of members in light of the fundingcuts that so many other non-profit organizations have experienced. In the summer,CEL members spend every weekend in and around the Chicago area – at Summerfest inMilwaukee, Ravinia, Millennium Park, ballgames, concerts in the park, Great America, areawater parks, fireworks by the lake, and the ever-popular mini-golf and ice cream.Meet JayIt is for this reason that CEL was founded more than 44 years ago and continues to flourishtoday. We are a “social and community connector” for nearly 500 youth and adults, ages 13to 75, with developmental disabilities from throughout the Chicago-area.A balanced, active and full life, within the community, provides that all important sense ofbelonging for people of all ages with developmental disabilities.Program OverviewCEL programs bring people together to develop new interests, strengthen skills, providesupports for navigating their community, and establish a strong social circle. Our membersare active participants in the planning of programs – after all, these programs are “personcentered”and reflect our members’ interests and curiosity. We realize that our members only “know what they know,” with some having a limited rangeof experiences. Our role in expanding their horizons is to offer a broad range of activitiesso when asked to plan programs, they have knowledge and experience on which to base theirchoices. For many members, CEL may be their only “social and community” conduit. We take thatrole very seriously and make every effort to optimize the connections our members have sothey continue to build those relationships beyond CEL – at home, in school, at work, andin the community. An obvious extrovert, CEL is a place where Jay can be a leader and help his fellow membersbecome more engaged and excited about activities.Jay attends the Wednesday night programs at CEL as well as many other special programsand outings. He loves coming to CEL because he makes new friends and tries new things. Hewants to keep busy and to be challenged as much as possible. Shooting hoops in the gym withhis friends and doing art projects are two of his favorite things to do at CEL.No one who meets Jay could imagine him being nervous or shy. He has an infectious smile andgreat sense of humor which gets everyone around him laughing. Yet, Jay says that when hefirst came to CEL in 2007 he was nervous and scared because he didn’t know anyone. He soonmade some good friends, like his friend Jeff, and now feels that CEL is like family.14 2011 Annual Report Programs 15

Day ProgramsOur fastest growing programs address the need for day programs for adults who havegraduated high school or are 22 years old and older. For these adults there are few optionsfor continued learning, life skills, recreation, enrichment, and socialization. Realizingthe need for day programs, CEL partnered with NSSRA 6 years ago to establish its firstday program – ELA (Enriched Lifestyles for Adults). Today, ELA is near capacity, and our3 year old REACH program has doubled in daily attendance. REACH participants spendmuch of their time in the community developing work and volunteer skills, learning skillsfor greater independence and healthier lives, strengthening peer and social groups, andtaking the steps to achieve their life goals.Meet Becky“The Center has beenvery good for Becky...With The Center we got awhole package of support.”After graduating high school, Becky spent a lot of time at home, bored and watching TV withonly her dog to keep her company. When she started attending the REACH program, Beckywas very quiet and didn’t feel confident in herself.Becky says, “At first it was extremely hard for me to get to know people.” But soon Beckystarted having fun and making friends. She discovered a love of horses when riding withREACH at Horsefeathers Therapeutic Riding Center. She now volunteers there three times aweek after REACH. She also volunteers at the Kohl Children’s Museum, helping prepare artprojects for children.Becky credits REACH and her new passion for horses for why she now is more outgoing, positive and busy! Her favorite activities with REACH are organizing shelves at Hobby Lobby,Book Club and our fitness program Club Fit. Becky loves to be challenged through REACH.She is now more independent and likes to figure out how to do things on her own. She likesthat the REACH staff let her try things for herself but are there if she needs them.Becky’s dad says, “The Center has been very good for Becky. It not only helps her be moreindependent, but The Center helped connect her to other resources like taking the Pace busor volunteering at Horsefeathers. With The Center we got a whole package of support.”16 2011 Annual Report Programs 17

School Age ProgramsSchool age youth (up to age 22) attend our community based After-school Clubs, staffed byCEL, at schools in the members’ neighborhoods, so that the youth don’t have to travel farto enjoy the social activities that others their age enjoy near home. In the summer, we offerCEL Adventure Camp with specialty camp options such as horseback riding, drama, andcreative arts along with an exciting post-camp program.Meet Megan“I learn new thingsat the After-school Club. It’s fun!”Although Megan is a very happy 16 year old high school student, her mom says that she isextra excited on After-school Club days. Like most teenagers, Megan craves social interaction. The school day can be very structured and offers limited opportunity for socializing but in theAfter-school Club at our Round Lake Beach area satellite, Megan can spend time with kids inher classes as well as kids she might not get to see much during the school day. She can makenew friends and strengthen existing bonds. For a girl who loves people, this time is truly invaluable. She very much wants to be around people and there are not many opportunities for herto do this during the week.In addition to the social opportunities the After-school Club provides, Megan loves getting achance to help out and be a leader. One of her favorite parts of the program is making a snack. The program activities are always changing, which keeps it interesting and is important forMegan since she sometimes has trouble concentrating. Program activities include arts & crafts,cooking/nutrition, music, exercise and special events and are developed by staff based on atheme selected by the participants.Megan’s mom says that she was so excited about the program because there hasn’t beenanything offered to them like this before. She feels confident that CEL staff take good careof Megan and she said, “I could tell that they cared about my child.” Megan is just happy toget to socialize and have fun with her friends. She says, “I learn new things at the After-schoolClub. It’s fun!”18 2011 Annual Report Programs 19

She metwith another organization before visiting The Center but, as she states, “Once I got here, mydecision was made. I knew I would like it.”Betty volunteers two days a week in the REACH program where she assists with activities suchas cooking and baking, one of her favorite pastimes. “I love talking to the members, beingwith them, and helping if I can.
