Thanks Paul!________________________________________________________________Drs Simon Armstrong & Paul Evans: A New Orthotic Breast ProtectionDevice - 17th October 2012From our Roving Report – Don SweeneyThis week we were treated to an amazing presentation. I don't think any of usrealised we had an inventor amongst our Rotary team - and it looks like he’s wellon his way to success with an amazing new product. Its technical tern is called a"breast laxity orthosis" – the public “name” for the product and graphic images arestill commercial-in-confidence.RCBHC Rotarian, Dr Paul Evans, is an Osteopath and a past President of theOsteopathy Association. He lives locally and his rooms are in Burwood. Paul’sinvention is mainly targeted at therapists who treat women who have had surgery

such as breast augmentation or breast cancer related treatments such as a lumpectomy or reconstructions - but in factthe orthotic also has relevance to many women not undergoing treatment and Paul anticipates that his invention will beavailable for sale to individuals as well as therapists.Paul explained to us that Clinicians who treat women in the prone position i.e. face down, for example, for back orshoulder therapy, could potentially damage recent surgical work to the breasts or displace implants - or at the very leastcause severe pain. The cause is simple to understand - the weight of their torso plus the pressure applied by theclinician compresses the breasts.Up until now the only strategies in common use were for patients and practitioners to haphazardly resort to the use ofrolled towels and bolsters/pillows and modified tables with holes for the breasts to ‘be received’ into.Paul’s invention, the orthotic is a cross-shaped orthotic which fits under the chest while the patient is in the proneposition and allows the weight of the patient’s torso and any applied pressure by the clinician to be transferred directlyto the therapy table rather than through the breasts.Paul has partnered with Dr Simon Armstrong from the National Institute of Integrative Medicine and they haveconducted clinical trials to test the orthotic and have verified the benefits. The trials involved sophisticated MRI studiesto examine internal tissue displacement and sensors to measure the resulting mechanical stresses. Apart fromconfirming that the orthotic reduced the mechanical stress on breast tissue and implants, another major outcome of thetrials was that women reported major reductions in pain during treatment through the use of the orthotic. In terms of its use by women outside the target market, i.e. not related to breast surgery, it is clear that it can be usefulin many normal daily activities such as sleeping, sun-tanning, lounging and undergoing therapeutic procedures andexaminations such as medical examinations, massage, acupuncture, osteopathic, chiropractic and physiotherapy. We wish Paul all the best with his invention and await news of manufacturing and distribution contracts.Don SweeneyOur next BIG Event: Phil Ruthven of IBISWorldJoin us on Wednesday November 21 st when well-know media and businesscommentator, Phil Ruthven, shares his current insights on economics and thebusiness world.Phil Ruthven is the founder and Chairman of IBISWorld, an international corporationproviding online business information, forecasting and strategicservices.Phil is widely considered as the nation’s most respected strategist and futuriston business, social and economic matters and is a regular speaker at conferences. He is currently a board member of CEDA, the Melbourne Institute andChairman of Open Family Australia.Phil is a science graduate with post graduate qualifications in management andeconomics.
