HARLEYSVILLE RISK SERVICESYour Partner in Preventing Losses SMFire Protection System ImpairmentWhenever a fire protection system cannot operate properly, it is said tobe impaired. The likelihood of a large loss due to a fire or explosion increasessignificantly if there is an outage of a fire protection system, alarm system, water supply or components of these systems. Your insurance agreementrequires you to notify Harleysville if your fire protection systems are impaired. All employees and contractors should follow the Harleysville ImpairmentProgram when it is necessary to disable a fire protection system. What’s the problem?Impairment is defined as a shutdown (in whole or in part) ofa fire protection system. Fire protection systems includesprinkler systems, standpipe/hose systems, fire pumps, fireprotection water supplies, fire mains, fire detection and alarmsystems.Impairment can be caused by many events and may beplanned, unplanned or unknown.A planned impairment is one that is scheduled and mayoccur during routine preventive maintenance, facilityrenovation or new construction. (For example, during aroutine inspection, you find that you need to shut off thewater supply temporarily to replace a broken sprinkler head.)An unplanned impairment occurs when an unexpectedevent impairs the normal function of the protection system. These “emergency-type” impairments may result from a fire incident, damage to the sprinklersystem (such as a ruptured or leaking pipe), mechanical damage, or an interruption of thewater supply (possibly due to a frozen or broken water main). An unknown (or hidden) impairment is the most serious type. It could occur when a fireprotection system is inadvertently left out of service upon completion of work, a system isshut down without proper notification, or a system is maliciously shut down. Regularinspection and testing of your systems can help reduce most hidden impairments.Your partner’s advice to stay safe!Whether the impairment is planned or accidental, you musttake precautions to minimize the duration and extent of theoutage, ensure prompt restoration, provide temporaryprotection and supervision, and reduce hazards in theaffected area. During impairments, it is your responsibility tonotify Harleysville and your agent, as well as your alarmcompany and local fire department.See other side >>Scan to learn the many waysHarleysville Risk Services can beYour Partner in Preventing Losses SM .Or, visit www.harleysvillegroup.com andclick on Policyholders > Risk services.
