UNIVERSITY FARM - continuedDairy cows waiting to be milkedrevenue from milk sales for the year was E 803,907.40, thisindicates a decrease of 16.5% compared to the previousyear, and was a result of the following factors:The increasing number of Animal Science students whouse the milking cows for their research projects bydoing feed trials, this affects the cow’s milk production;Climate change that brings about the high temperatureswhich affect the cows as they favor low temperaturesfor maximum milk production; andFarm pastures which were not in good state due to thedry spell and poor irrigation infrastructure.Piggery EnterpriseRevenue from the piggery enterprise for the year was E99,635.00. This amount represents a 16% decline from theprevious year’s sales. Due to feeds shortages, the numberof animals had to be quickly reduced and this resulted inlow sales.Revenue generated from dairy cattle sales amounted toE174, 220.00. Total revenue from the dairy unit cattle plusmilk sales was E 1,015,383.78, indicating an increase fromthe E944 379.30 that was generated the previous year.The Beef EnterpriseThere were no major sales from this enterprise during theyear under review. There were 14 cows with a calving rateof 95%. Only two animals were sold to the University andthe revenue stood at E 10,575.00.A sow with its pigletsOther livestockThe small stock herd comprises three sheep and fifteengoats.
