Letter From The EditorStyle… a word synonymous with the Hamptons. There are many styles: fashion style; writing style; but mostimportantly, lifestyle. We the fortunate ones have access to a way of life not known by many. From vineyardhopping to beach combing and driving with the top down, our dogs are along for the ride. One of my greatest missions with this magazine is to portray an authentic, healthy, Hamptons lifestyle of dogsand their owners. I also aim to bring readers only that which is beneficial to dogs and edit out the rest. I am toldI am picky, saying no to advertisers as often as I say yes. I am! As a dog trainer and editor of this magazine I havea distinct point of view of how dogs should live and be treated. I’m discerning. That’s my style. So whether your lifestyle is heading to Pierre’s or The Golden Pear for coffee with your best friend or jetting offto Palm Beach, we got you covered. That’s our style. Hamptons residents and their pets rejoice as thesummer weather continues to heat up. Visits to thebeach, jaunts through town and days spent barbequingin the backyard by the pool; these are a few of ourfavorite things. However, a threat is looming–thethreat of tick-borne illness. As East Enders, we allknow to check ourselves for ticks routinely but areyou taking the necessary steps to also protect yourpets? Symptoms of tick-borne illness in animals canbe difficult to recognize and many pet owners areunaware that their animal is suffering until it’s toolate. Let’s not forget, it’s also important to protect ouranimals in order to prevent them from carrying ticksinto the home and spreading them to humans.Because ticks are most abundant in heavily woodedareas, keeping pets contained on the lawn and out ofthe woods is the easiest way to protect them. At EastEnd Tick Control, we recommend It’s also a good ideato take care when choosing plants for your landscapingor garden. There are many plants that will attract deerand the deer is an essential part of the life cycle forticks and the diseases they carry. But the yard isn’t theonly place where pets are at risk. Beach grass is fullof ticks and dogs that go to the beach should be keptaway from dunes. It’s also a good idea to keep youranimal’s fur shorter in the summer to make it easierto spot ticks.Applying products such as Frontline and K9 Advantixto your animal’s fur also helps by killing any ticks thatcome in contact with them for a full 30 days. Kellysuggests using these products often. Tick collars areanother option and may provide protection for up to6 months.Checking for TicksIf your pet’s fur is kept short, it will be easier to feel atick as you brush your fingers through their fur. Tickscan vary in size depending on how long they havebeen attached so it’s best to take your time to checkall around the legs, ears and tail. After feeding, a tickbecomes engorged and is usually a grey color. Try toget in the habit of checking your pet daily. In a single motion, pull the tickupwards and awayfrom the skinUse a pair oftweezers and graspthe tick very close tothe animal’s skinClean the skin with soapand warm water and checkto make sure the headand legs of the tick are nolonger in the skinSave the tick andbring it to your vetin case your dogbecomes ill
