2 Oklahoma Family Physician Report Fall 2010 Fall Board Meeting (Continued from page 1) Launched in 2008, it is being considered for funding in 2011 by sanofi-aventis, and the goal is to take the program nationwide. GO! Diabetes continues to progress from a scientific program to focusing more on practice enhancement. Blackstock announced that the OAFP will host the AAFP Multi-State Meeting in Dallas Feb. 19 and Feb. 20, 2011. Eleven AAFP chapters participate in the meeting, which provides an excellent opportunity for members to network. Dr. McIntosh reviewed the OAFP membership report for the Membership Committee. He noted that the chapter currently has 1,233 members, and he stated that the committee will continue to promote membership benefits to the list of prospective members provided by the AAFP and to individuals Board Meeting attendees know personally. Dr. Kevin Steichen, reporting for the Patient Advocacy Committee, announced that members would be asked for written nominations for the OAFP annual awards: Legislator of the Year; Family Physician of the Year; Friend of Family Medicine; Partner of the Year (representative and physician); and Patient Advocate of the Year. All nominations must include a written recommendation, which can be e-mailed or mailed to the OAFP office. Nominations are due by March 15, 2011. Dr. Steve Crawford advised that the OAFP will work with Rep. Doug Cox, MD, and Rep. This Legislation will provide loan repayment to primary care physicians who commit to practice in underserved rural communities throughout Oklahoma. Collaborative support is provided by many state medical associations, The OSU Center for Rural Health, The University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center and the State Chamber of Commerce. Blackstock noted that press conferences are being held throughout the state with the assistance of community chambers of commerce and community hospitals that are adding their support to the coalition. Dr. Crawford said another legislative issue during the 2011 session will be Oklahoma’s pre-emption law. Oklahoma is one of two states in the nation that do not allow cities and local municipalities to provide restrictions on smoking or tobacco use in public. Jeff Wilson of the One Oklahoma Coalition presented information to the Board on State Question 744 and asked the OAFP leadership to take an official position and oppose the measure, which will be on the ballot Nov. 2. Wilson stated that although the initiative would bring educational funding in Oklahoma up to the regional average, there is no indication as to how the funds will be allocated. With no funding mechanism in place, this measure would not only lead to cuts in the state budget, including Medicaid funding, but would most likely result in tax increases for Oklahomans. Dr. Crawford noted that the OSMA Board is opposed to SQ 744. A motion was made and approved for the OAFP to oppose SQ 744, as well.
Fall 2010 Oklahoma Family Physician Report 3 FCMIG Holds Welcome Lunch The 2010 FCMIG annual Student Welcome Lunch was held Sept. 9 at the Basic Sciences Education Building - West Lecture Hall on the OUHSC campus. Family Physician of the Year: This physician provides his/her patients with compassionate, comprehensive and caring family medicine on a continuing basis; is directly and effectively involved in community affairs and activities that enhance the quality of his/her community; provides a credible role model professionally and personally to his/her community, to other health professionals, residents and medical students; can effectively represent the specialty of family medicine and the American Academy of Family Physicians in public speaking; is in good standing in his/her medical community; and is a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians. Friend of Family Medicine: This award recognizes a layperson for his/her commitment to family medicine in Oklahoma. Partner of the Year: This award acknowledges a Choice CME Partner representative and an OAFP physician who have shown an outstanding commitment and professionalism toward strengthening the ongoing partnership between family physicians and industry. Patient Advocate of the Year: This award is presented in recognition for outstanding commitment and the promotion of the specialty of family medicine for the betterment of the health of the people of Oklahoma.
