Researchers at the University of
Oklahoma’s Department of Family and
Preventive Medicine, in collaboration with
clinician members of the Oklahoma
Physicians Resource/Research Network,
are carrying out a number of exciting
projects that could benefit all family
physicians.
The National Heart, Lung and Blood
Institute awarded the OU-DFPM a grant
to study ways to help primary care
practices implement the latest asthma
guidelines. Forty-eight practices from
Oklahoma and western New York have been chosen at
random to receive four different types of assistance. The results
will provide information for future quality improvement
initiatives throughout the country.
A similar project, funded by the Agency for Healthcare
Research and Quality, will investigate ways to help practices
implement chronic kidney disease guidelines and then spread
the lessons they learn to other practices in their communities.
Practices interested in participating will be recruited and
enrolled beginning in November 2010.
In addition, AHRQ, the Oklahoma Health Care Authority
and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services have
provided funding for a project designed to link primary care
practices to nutrition education programs offered by the
Oklahoma State University Cooperative Extension program.
Forty-eight practices in Oklahoma – 24 of them already have
been recruited – will be involved in this project over the next
two years. The other 24 will be recruited and enrolled in
mid-2011.
scholarship to help offset their travel and lodging expenses.
The Great Plains Family Medicine Residency Program, Saint
Anthony Family Medicine Residency Program, OU-OKC
Department of Family Medicine and OU Tulsa Department of
Family Medicine covered the expense of the students’
registration fees.
Researchers And Clinicians Collaborate On New Projects
Another AHRQ-funded project involves
connecting primary care practices in Norman to a
regional health information exchange organization,
SMRTNET, and to a preventive services reminder
system to see if the additional information improves
patient care. Norman was chosen because most of the
primary care practices there use the same electronic
health record, and they are connected to one another
through a community-based electronic hub.
Other DFPM-OKPRN initiatives are focused on
poison ivy, brown recluse spider bites and
prioritization of interventions for patients with
multiple risk factors and chronic medical problems.
