RECOMMENDED LINE SIZEFor fish up to 1kg use 3 to 4kg line, gamefish 1 1/2 to 2 1/2kg use 5 or 6kg line, for larger fish use 7.5 to 10kg line. If fishingnear rocks or other hazards use heavier line tohelp avoid line breakage.FILLING THE SPOOL WITH LINEAlways take the line from the front of thedispenser, never the side.Wind on firmly and evenly onto thespool, spreading the line to give a smoothcasting base.Never stretch a nylon monofilament onto aspool, when it goes back to its original lengthit will exert strong enough crushing action todamage your spool. Never allow loose coilsto develop on your spool through carelessuneven winding. Adopt the habit of applyinglight finger tension while the line is spreadevenly over its bed.SELECTING A RODYour rod and reel outfit should be designedso you can hold it comfortably over longperiods. Most standard boat rods arecompatible with Alvey Deep Sea Reels. Usinga rod bucket around your waist also makesfishing easier. When fishing a reefy area which causesconstant fouling of the gear, the customary rigwould have the lead weight attached to theextreme end of the rig, with a line of lesser strainthan the mainline. This allows the weight tobreak free without large loss of costly line. The hooks can be joined to the mainline with aRIG FOR SNAPPER AND REEF FISHblood loop dropped knot, or double overhandloop knot, but we prefer to advise the use ofthree-way swivels which are as small aspracticable. Select the type which have a directworking action between two of the swivel eyes(‘T’ shape) and do not attach traces to the topeye of the swivel.RIGS & SWIVELSWhen used properly a brass swivel is a veryinexpensive and efficient way to keep afishing line in good condition.Curls and twists in a line can be caused bymany things, but can be kept to a minimum bya correct use of a swivel. All reels that cast from the side of a stationaryspool give maximum unrestricted casting, freefrom snarls or backlash, but it’s essential that asmall free running swivel is used as the last itemabove the rig. This is a very efficient rig, making use of three-way swivels. This allows the baits to spin freelyas the sinker takes them down and allows any twist in the line to adjust itself as the line slackenswith the rise and fall of the boat. The swivel mustbe above the weight.Whatever the rigalways use thesmallest practicalswivel above anyattachment to the line.DEEP WATER ANGLINGThe successful methods and rigs used inocean and bay fishing differ very greatly ineach area studied. Consequently there can beno hard and fast instructional rigs shown. There is no substitute for obtainingknowledge from someone who has regulargood results in the locality. We can assure you that your introduction torod and reel in this type of fishing will bringyou more proficient angling and greaterenjoyment from each fish caught. The size ofyour catch will always depend to a largedegree on the knowledge and ability of thehelmsman to correctly position the boat onSWIVEL SIZESSize No. 12 Lines 3 to 5kg breaking strain.Size No.10 Lines 6 to 7kg breaking strainSize No.8 Lines 10 to 12kg breaking strain.Size No.6 Lines 12 to 17kg breaking strain.good feeding grounds, some of which are noteasily located in ocean waters. However, there are some features which havebeen found to be advantageous in many areasand we list a few of your guidance. Before selecting a position on the boat, assuming it is a large charter vessel, enquirewhether the fishing will be done from ananchored boat, or if it is mainly while driftingwith the ocean swells. When lying at anchorthe prime position is undoubtedly at the stern.Yet when drift fishing you will be better placedin the centre side of the boat.ALVEY ‘A’ SERIESDIRECT WIND REEL - MODELS A1 & A5The ultimate in simplicity of construction, with the absolute minimum of wearing parts.‘A’ Series reels have no star drag action. Asthe fish makes its run, even-line tension ismaintained by the angler taking his or herfingers from the winding handle and puttingthem under the reel against the line still left inthe spool well.ALVEY ‘’C SERIESNON-REVERSING DRAG MODELS -C1 & C5Incorporating a multi-plate friction clutch onlarger models these reels give a wide range oftension settings which don’t vary once setwhile battling with the fish, but the dragcontrol star nut is positioned in such a way thatadjustments can be made while the fish isplayed. With the pawl knob engaged, thehandle locks in a stationary position while thespool continues to give line to the running fish.SETTING THE DRAGThe drag system allows line to be pulledfrom the reel under tension without breakingwhen a fish strikes, or makes a quick run whenhooked. Set the drag by turning the anti-reverse‘on’ then pull the line against a small handscale.Adjust the drag tension from one third to nomore than half the line’s ideal strength. It’sbetter to start fishing with the drag set too loosethan too tight, and tightening it when the fish ison. If too tight, the line may break. Alwaysloosen the drag completely after fishing.PLAYING THE FISHOnce the fish has been hooked always keep abend in the rod by holding it at an angle to thefish. With the power of an Alvey reel, you onlyneed to hold the rod up and wind in. If the fishis too strong, let go some line until it tires thenrewind. With large fish, pumping with the rodwill help in landing it.MAINTENANCEUse Alvey reel Lube for working spindlesetc. Then light machine oil on handles andindex mechanism. After each day’s fishingwash off salt and sand and lubricate as abovebefore storage. Unless major overhaul isrequired, there’s no need to strip the reelcompletely.
