This research is aimed at solving fundamentalproblems of sedimentation that bear implications for engineering management ofriver channels. Ongoing projects include an investigation of bedload sedimentationduring the passage of flash floods in desert rivers in collaboration with Israeligeographers from Ben Gurion University of the Negev, Beer Sheva. The fieldstation deploys large automatic bedload sediment monitoring equipment designed byme while at Birkbeck College, London. In addition to these field-based projects,laboratory flume studies are investigating details of the flow structure with theexpectation of elucidating further the fundamental mechanics of sedimententrainment.Agricultural and Forest Hydrology. This research is of relevance to land-usemanagement and has implications for water resources. Emphases are on thehydrology of cracking clay soils and the efficiency of underdrainage systems, and theeffect of afforestation of the English countryside on groundwater recharge. The lastis in collaboration with the Forestry Commission and the University of Newcastle.Rift Sedimentation - Triassic North Sea, Pleistocene Dead Sea. These projectsevolved from my long association with palaeoanthropologists and archaeologists inthe East African Rift and the search for evidence of Early Man. They reflect mygeneral interest in deserts and have attempted to apply the lessons that can be1

learnt in today's drylands to those of the past. They have obvious connotations forhydrocarbon exploration, but the work in the Dead Sea Rift has also borneimplications for understanding the impact of future climatic change on the world'sdrylands by assessing the changing patterns of rainfall-runoff that have resulted fromprevious long-term changes in regional climate.Editorial Work:(Co-editor) 1985.
