DEF STAN 00-23 Issue 4Infra Red Reflective (IRR) Requirements for Painting MilitaryEquipment1 ScopeThis standard defines the colour, colour tolerance and IRR requirements for a limited number of camouflagecolours.2 WarningThe Ministry of Defence (MOD), like its contractors, is subject to both United Kingdom and European lawsregarding Health and Safety at Work. All Defence Standards either directly or indirectly invoke the use ofprocesses and procedures that could be injurious to health if adequate precautions are not taken. DefenceStandards or their use in no way absolves users from complying with statutory and legal requirementsrelating to Health and Safety at Work.3 Normative References3.1 The publications shown below are referred to in the text of this standard. Publications are groupedand listed in alpha numeric order.BS 381CBS 3900Specification for Colours for Identification, Coding and SpecialPurposesMethods of Test for Paints3.2 Reference in this standard to any normative reference means in any invitation to tender or contractthe edition and all amendments current at the date of such tender or contract unless a specific edition isindicated.3.3 In consideration of 3.2 above, users shall be fully aware of the issue and amendment status of allnormative references, particularly when forming part of an invitation to tender or contract. Responsibility forthe correct application of standards rests with users.3.4 DStan can advise regarding where normative references are obtained from. Requests for suchinformation can be made to the DStan Helpdesk. How to contact the helpdesk is shown on the outside rearcover of Def Stans.4 Description4.1 The specified properties defined in this standard are to be used in conjunction with the appropriatematerial specification, as specified in the contract or order. Additional colours and their IRR properties maybe defined.4.2 The appropriate material specification will define the panel preparation required for determining thecolour and IRR together with the other film properties required of the coating.4.3 A limited range of camouflage colours is specified.

DEF STAN 00-23 Issue 45 Requirements5.1 Infra Red Reflectance (IRR) PropertiesThe IRR properties of the paint shall comply with the requirements of Table 1.5.2 Colour5.2.1 NATO GreenThe colour difference, determined in accordance with BS 3900: Parts D8, D9 and D10, against a new BS381C, Colour No 285 card (or the stored reflectance data for a new BS 381C, Colour No 285 card) shall beas follows:dE* ab < 1.0 unitda*< 0.5 unit5.2.2 Other ColoursColours other than NATO Green, shall match the colour specified by the purchaser in accordance with BS3900 Part D1 under diffuse daylight.Table 1 Reflectance RequirementsColoursBS381CColour No.RequirementMethodNATO Green 285 Annex B at all wavelengths between 400and 1200 nm. Annex ADetermination of Infra Red ReflectanceDEF STAN 00-23 Issue 4A.1 Test Sample PanelThe test panel shall be prepared and painted in accordance with the relevant material standard withparticular reference to the specified full paint scheme and dry film thickness. In the absence of a specificmaterial standard, the test panel shall be prepared and painted in accordance with the paint manufacturersinstructions and the agreement of the responsible Technical Authority named in the contract or order.A.2 ApparatusA.2.1 A recording spectrophotometer fitted with an integrating sphere. Illumination of the sample shall beat an angle not exceeding 10° from the normal. Measurements shall be made with the specular componentof reflection, included in the 8°/t geometry. The instrument shall meet the following requirements:Measuring rangeWavelength accuracy400 nm to 1200 nm± 5 nmMeasuring accuracy ± 2%A.2.2 The 100% baseline shall be calibrated using a reflectance standard that is traceable to a NationalStandard. Between the wavelengths 400 nm to 1200 nm the standard shall have an absolute reflectance atleast 98%. Reflectance grade PTFE, such as Spectralon, has been found to be suitable.A.3 ProcedureUsing the spectrophotometer in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions, obtain the reflectance ofthe painted panel surface at 10 nm intervals over the range specified in Table 1.3
