monogamists voted in <strong>the</strong> thous<strong>and</strong>s, Quisp carried <strong>the</strong> day, <strong>and</strong> Quake was banished to<br />

<strong>the</strong> br<strong>and</strong> ne<strong>the</strong>rworld, alongside Breck, Brylcreem, Burma Shave <strong>and</strong> similar marketing<br />

has beens. It was a pyrrhic victory, however, because Quisp too was slowly withdrawn<br />

from national distribution in 1977, when <strong>the</strong> kids who grew up with it grew out of it.<br />

Bowed but unbeaten, <strong>the</strong> bypassed br<strong>and</strong> languished in a limited number of<br />

regional markets for twentysomething years. Until such times, that is, as Quisp kids had<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir own kids to feed <strong>and</strong> br<strong>and</strong> revivals became <strong>the</strong> marketing maneuver of <strong>the</strong> moment.<br />

Spurred by <strong>the</strong> hyperconnectivity of <strong>the</strong> Internet, interest in <strong>the</strong> br<strong>and</strong> began to blossom<br />

online in <strong>the</strong> mid 1990s. Exchanges between Quisp have <strong>and</strong> have note regions became<br />

commonplace on commerce sites such as eBay <strong>and</strong> in newsgroups devoted to collectors<br />

of children’s cereals <strong>and</strong> toys. Responding to <strong>the</strong> resurgence in interest, in October 1999<br />

Quaker re-released <strong>the</strong> product in a bright new, cartoon-encrusted box, courtesy of South<br />

Park supremos, Trey Parker <strong>and</strong> Matt Stone. Although <strong>the</strong> premium priced comestible is<br />

carried by several leading supermarket chains ($3 for a tiny, nine-ounce box), it is mainly<br />

sold on-line, thanks to a dedicated website (www.quisp.com), which also serves as a<br />

rallying point for <strong>the</strong> community of consumers that is again accreting around <strong>the</strong> much-<br />

missed br<strong>and</strong>.<br />

With such significant Internet involvement, Quisp was a prime conadidate for a<br />

netnographic analysis that unobtrusively studied <strong>the</strong> interactions of online Quisp<br />

community members. When we examined this br<strong>and</strong> community, it became to us clear<br />

that one of <strong>the</strong> principal issues exercising Quisp fans is Au<strong>the</strong>nticity. Debates about <strong>the</strong><br />

genuineness—or lack <strong>the</strong>reof— of <strong>the</strong> reanimated cereal cause considerable consumer<br />

consternation <strong>and</strong> not a little controversy. For some aficionados, new Quisp is a pale<br />
