particular generation or cohort.<br />

summoning vivid experience from collective memory, <strong>and</strong> of encouraging<br />
consumers to embroider that experience with contemporary relevance.<br />
• Utopianism is perhaps <strong>the</strong> hallmark of <strong>the</strong> retro-br<strong>and</strong>. The br<strong>and</strong> must be<br />
capable of mobilizing an Elysian vision, of engendering a longing for an<br />
idealized past that is satisfied through consumption.<br />
• Solidarity is an important unifying quality of <strong>the</strong> retro-br<strong>and</strong>. Whe<strong>the</strong>r as<br />
extreme as a cargo cult or as moderate as fictive kinship, <strong>the</strong> br<strong>and</strong> must<br />
inspire among its users <strong>the</strong> sense of belonging to a community.<br />
• Perfectibility is <strong>the</strong> final trait a retro-br<strong>and</strong> encompasses. The br<strong>and</strong> must<br />
be indefinitely updateable, both technologically <strong>and</strong> ideologically, to<br />
assure its perpetual relevance to consumers who are constantly revising<br />
