SALES & MARKETING MARKET OVERVIEW
CONSUMER GOODS
This sector is performing strongly and we
predict positive employment conditions for
the remainder of 2006 and 2007. The retail
sector is buoyant because of high consumer
spending on luxury items and lifestyle
products. Global high-end fashion and luxury
product companies have responded to these
favourable conditions by strengthening their
brand presence and opening additional
retail outlets. This is driving demand for
management level professionals in retail
operations, visual merchandising, public
relations and marketing.
Sportswear and lifestyle product companies
have also been aggressively investing in the
region. European and US brands continue to
enter the Asian market with many companies
using Hong Kong as a base to expand
operations into the PRC.
Business confi dence in the FMCG sector is
positive and we have seen steady growth
during 2006. While demand at the junior level
remains stable, key account and marketing
managers are highly sought after with
attractive opportunities for proven performers.
Demand certainly exceeds supply and in many
instances this labour shortage has become
a major barrier to business growth and
expansion.
MANUFACTURING/ INDUSTRIAL
Manufacturing in Hong Kong and South China
continues to boom and this has driven record
levels of employment growth in 2006.
Electrical and semi-conductor manufacturers
have been recruiting marketing managers
for offi ces in Hong Kong as well as regional
locations. Candidates with strong CRM,
database management and e-commerce
marketing experience are highly sought after.
Due to the shortage of people with relevant
marketing skills, employers are targeting
candidates from a range of industries and
accepting they may have to invest in training
and development.
Logistics companies are focusing their
recruitment activities on the areas of business
development and sales. Demand is strongest
for business development and account
managers.
There has been a sharp increase in
demand for middle to senior level business
development and general management
professionals for South China-based
positions. While most employers are providing
accommodation in China, some Hong Kong
candidates prefer to commute on a daily basis
between Hong Kong and South China factory
locations.
