What do we do in OFAPD?• Establish and sustain a culture that promotes facultyvitality and diversity• Plan and implement faculty development activities thatensure effective and successful recruitment, appointment,retention, and promotion of faculty• Train and educate visionary, innovative leaders who arecapable of promoting the school's mission and capitalizingupon emerging challenges


What do we do in OFAPD?• Implement a life-cycle of learning experiences that enablefaculty to achieve their highest ambitions as educators,investigators, and clinicians• Ensure consistency with the school's strategic plan andcore beliefs, and ensure optimal use of limited resourcesby coordinating school and university-wide facultydevelopment offerings• Expand participation in national and international groupsthat assist or promote faculty affairs, leadership, andprofessional development• Assist our faculty to be the best they can be


<strong>Randy</strong> R. <strong>Brutkiewicz</strong>, Ph.D.Assistant Dean for Faculty Affairs and Professional DevelopmentProfessor, Department of Microbiology and Immunology(rbrutkie@iupui.edu)OFAPD Offerings for <strong>Research</strong> FacultyThe <strong>Research</strong> Faculty Development Seminarsare short (~1 hr) presentations are given by one ortwo senior faculty members, often giving a personalperspective on topics that are of great importance totenure-track and non-tenure track junior researchfaculty, such as recruiting laboratory personnel,balancing grants and kids, and other elements tofoster their success.The OFAPD website (http://faculty.medicine.iu.edu/ )has links to resources important for research facultythat include a guide to applying for grants at theIUSM, Sponsored <strong>Research</strong> Services, the Office ofthe Vice President for <strong>Research</strong> Administration, aswell as video files of previous presentations in the<strong>Research</strong> Faculty Development Seminar Series,among others.The research faculty workshops are more extensiveinteractive activities focused on areas of importantinterest to research faculty, such as scientific writing,mock study section grant reviews, navigating the P&Tprocess for research faculty, etc. These activitiescomplement those presentations given in the <strong>Research</strong>Faculty Development Seminar Series.A critical component of the development of juniorresearch faculty is mentoring. Our office works inconcert with efforts by the departments and divisionsto enhance the success of research faculty on bothsides: mentee AND mentor. These activities can beeither formal or informal. The important point is thatsuch relationships assist the faculty as they move upthrough the ranks.
