Part IIIThe Top 200 InstitutionsThe following tables list the top 200 universitiesand colleges on each of the nine performance measures, along with National Merit and AchievementScholars. (The Source Notes section provides detailedinformation on each of the 10 data elements.) Unlikethe previous tables in Parts I and II, this sectionincludes data for all academic institutions regardless oftheir federal research activity level.TheCenter provides each institution’s rank nationallyamong all universities as well as its rank by institutionalcontrol (i.e., rank among private or publicpeers). In cases where several institutions tie for lastplace, we use a different cutoff point. For NationalAcademy members, we list all institutions with atleast one National Academy member among theirfaculty (a total of 195 institutions). In the case offaculty awards, we limit institutions to those with atleast three faculty awards (a total of 202 institutions).Tables in this section include:• 2003 Total Research Expenditures• 2003 Federal Research Expenditures• 2004 Endowment Assets• 2004 Annual Giving• 2004 National Academy Membership• 2004 Faculty Awards• 2004 Doctorates Granted• 2003 Postdoctoral Appointees• 2003 SAT Scores(Source: the Annual Survey of Colleges of theCollege Board and Data Base, 2003-2004.Copyright © 2004 College Entrance ExaminationBoard. All rights reserved.)• 2004 National Merit and AchievementScholarsData found in these tables may not always matchthe figures published by the original source. TheCentermakes adjustments, when necessary, to ensure thatthe data reflect the activity at a single campus ratherthan that of a multiple-campus institution or stateuniversity system. When data are missing from theoriginal source, TheCenter may substitute anotherfigure if available. A full discussion of this subject, aswell as the various adjustments or substitutions madeto the original data, is in the Data Notes section ofthis report.TheCenter presents these tables, along with theprior years’ top 200, as Microsoft Excel spreadsheetson-line at [http://thecenter.ufl.edu].The Top American Research Universities 2005 Page 187
