Medical and Engineering ProgramsIn the essay portion of this 2005 edition of TheTop American Research Universities, we build on thecontinuing effort to understand the impact of majorcomponents of research university activities on the keydeterminants of competitive research success.We have looked at a wide range of characteristicsincluding the impact of medical schools, the significanceof undergraduate student enrollment, theimpact of ownership (private or public), the organizationalstructure of public universities within theirsystems, the importance of disposable income in supportingresearch competition, and the role of intercollegiateathletics in research universities.In this year’sreport, we return to atopic of considerablecontinuing interestin the managementof research universitycompetition. Mostobservers of this competitionsee the roleof high performingmedical schools andcompetitive engineeringschools as criticaladvantages in thecompetition for federaland other researchfunding. They worrythat the comparisonsbetween institutionswith medical and engineeringschools andthose without distorttheir relative competitiveness.While thedata are very clear thatmedical schools vary dramatically in their researchproductivity, we thought it useful to place the contributionof medical schools to their campus’ researchproductivity into a clearer perspective. This editionincludes a discussion of the impact of medical schoolsand engineering schools on research university competitivenessand provides a set of data that reordersthe institutions with the medical school componentremoved. As is always our practice, we put the completetable used for this discussion on line in Excelformat so our colleagues can download it and reorderor reanalyze it as appropriate for their needs.“The role of highperforming medicalschools and competitiveengineering schoolsappears to give acritical advantagein the universitycompetition forresearch funding.”TheCenter at Six YearsA unique research enterprise, TheCenter focuses onthe competitive national context for major researchuniversities. As mentioned above, TheCenter’s annualreport, The Top American Research Universities, classifiesuniversities into groups according to their standingon nine measures: total research expenditures,federal research expenditures, endowment assets,annual giving, National Academy members, facultyawards, PhDs awarded, postdoctoral appointees, andSAT/ACT scores. The Top American Research Universitiesnot only provides data on various research universities,but also addresses a topic relevant to universityperformance as part of each year’s publication. Manyuniversities routinely request multiple copies of thereport each year to give to donors, trustees, and legislatures.The report provides a context for monitoringprogress from year to year, and serves as a benchmarkfor institutional comparisons. Universities also useour report as a means to complete strategic plans.Various other groups contact TheCenter for copies ofthe report or for permission to reproduce the parts ofthe report of interest to their institution. Agenciesand consulting firms request copies when taking onhigher education clients, and graduate students fromacross the country use TheCenter Web site and callseeking additional data for their research.Page TheCenter at Six Years
TheCenter also appears as a reference on variousWeb sites. These include the Association for AmericanUniversities (AAU; http://www.aau.edu) and theAssociation for American Universities Data Exchange(AAUDE; http://www.pb.illinois.edu/AAUDE/).Another site is the University of Illinois’ educationlibrary’s excellent site that references a wide range ofcollege rankings publications (http://www.library.uiuc.edu/edx/rankgrad.htm). Many institutions useTheCenter’s faculty awards and honors list as a standardizedsource for these difficult-to-compile data.Another feature of particular interest to institutionsis the focus on campus-specific data within the tablesof The Top American Research Universities. Manysources of university data report numbers for systemsin some states and for individual campuses in others,making comparisons difficult. TheCenter allocatessystem data to individual campuses using the bestinformation (usually from the campuses themselves)available. Indeed, it is this feature that prompted theCarnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teachingto use TheCenter’s methodology for allocatingsystem data to campuses for its new classifications.For R&D expenditures data, we used the allocationscheme developed by TheCenter at the University ofFlorida and used in their rankings of research universities(see http://thecenter.ufl.edu/DataNotesIntroText.html[accessed December 20, 2005]). The Carnegie Classificationof Institutions of Higher Education (http://carnegieclassification-preview.org/pdf/preview-basic2005.pdf),accessedDecember 30, 2005.The response includes an average of 6,300 hitswithin the four months immediately following its releaseeach year. On average, TheCenter mails approximately2,800 copies of the report each year, whichincludes foreign requests. Immediately following therelease of the report, newspapers across the countrycall TheCenter to get more information regarding theresults. National newspapers are often interested inthe content of the new essay presented in the frontsection of the report each year.In addition to the annual report and the separatelypublished studies mentioned above, TheCenter alsoproduces various other publications on issues importantto research universities, such as national rankingsand faculty data.
