The significance of the table, however, is powerfully expressed in painting and poetry. Again, I vividlyrecall the heavy, unpainted wooden table of my farmer grandfather. Theretdembrance of the table is stronger than that of the room itself.Everyone had his or her place at the table, my grandfather sitting at theinner end. The opposite end of the long table, closer to the entrance, wasleft empty and was occupied only by the occasional guest. The table wasthe stage for eating, sewing, playing, doing homework, socializing withneighbours and strangers, ete. The table was the organizing centre of thefarmer's house. The table marked the difference between weekday andSunday, working day and feast day.We could similarly and extensively survey other focusing images of thehome, but we do not have the space on time on this occasion.17 18The bed as space and ashorisontal element17 Renaissance heds from Milan about 1540. 18 Unidentified illustration.http://www2.uiah.fi/esittely/historia/e_ident.htm (15 of 23)22/10/2550 16:34:02
