Henoted that the <strong>College</strong>’sDivision of Student Affairshas been working since Juneto notify students of thechanges and to assist them infinding the financial meansto continue or to begin theirstudies.Dr. Gabert said <strong>Hudson</strong><strong>County</strong> <strong>Community</strong> <strong>College</strong>has one of the most proactiveand successful Financial AidDepartments, and that itsstaff is doing everythingpossible to reduce the effectsof these new regulations onHCCC students.“When we learned ofstudents who l ost eligibilityor were in danger of losingeligibility, we immediatelynotified them via phone,email and snail-mail so wecould begin the appeal processwith th em. We evenutilized an outside firm thatspecializes in outreach tocontact them. However, onlyabout 30% of those studentshave replied.” he said.As legislated, the newfederal financial aid rulesaffect who is eligible forfinancial aid as well as howmuch federal aid some studentsmay receive, how longthey will be able to receiveaid, and the interest rate atwhich loans h ave to b e repaid.The following are thechanges that ar e having/willhave the gr eatest impact onHCCC students:1.) The maximum PellGrant will re main at thecurrent level of $5,500 forthe <strong>2012</strong>-13 academic year.Currently, a family with anannual income of $32,000 orless automatically qualifiesfor the full amount. However,the new legislationlowers the an nual familyincome threshold for Pe llGrant eligibility to $23,000.90% of HCCC studentsreceive Pell Grants.(Continued on page 16)

They madeBig Bambú: You Can’t, YouDon’t, and Y ou Won’t Stop in2010.Big Bambú then becamethe official collateral exhibitionof the 54th Venice Bien nale in2011. During the exhibition,more than 600,000 visitors sawthe bamboo structure, whichmeasured 100 feet long, 50 feetwide and 50 feet high. It was inthe form of a cresting wavemade of 7,000 interconnected 30- and 40-foot-long fresh-cutbamboo poles, lashed together▲RECENTLY ACQUIRED artwork by Mike + Doug Starn. CelebratingDR. GLEN GABERTIn just two decades, Dr. Glen Gabert hastransformed <strong>Hudson</strong> <strong>County</strong> <strong>Community</strong><strong>College</strong> and expanded opportunities forthousands of <strong>Hudson</strong> <strong>County</strong> residents andbusinesses.The longest-serving President in <strong>Hudson</strong><strong>County</strong> <strong>Community</strong> <strong>College</strong>’s history, Dr.Gabert is a native of Chicago. He wasawarded his Ph.D. from Loyola University,where he was a Schmitt Fellow and memberof the Loyola Graduate School ofEducation adjunct faculty. In addition, heearned a post-doctoral M.B.A. in HumanResources from the Graduate School ofManagement at Rockhurst University. Dr.Gabert also holds a master’s degree fromNotre Dame University (where he was aHearst Fellow), and a bachelor’s degreefrom Benedictine University.Dr. Gabert began his community collegecareer at Moraine Valley <strong>Community</strong><strong>College</strong> (IL), first as the Assistant to theAcademic Vice President, and later asAssistant to the President. During his sixyears at Moraine Valley, he was also amember of the adjunct faculty. FromMoraine he went on to Johnson <strong>County</strong><strong>Community</strong> <strong>College</strong> (KS), where he servedas Dean and was responsible for humanresources, development, institutionalresearch and planning, and public relations/communications. While there he developedJohnson’s first set of comprehensive2020years@HCCCpersonnel policies, and provided leadershipfor a feasibility study which resulted in thedevelopment of the <strong>College</strong>’s acclaimedperforming arts center.When Dr. Gabert became President of<strong>Hudson</strong> <strong>County</strong> <strong>Community</strong> <strong>College</strong> in1992, he was the fifth person to have heldthat position in three years. At that time, the<strong>College</strong> had experienced interventions bythe New Jersey Secretary of HigherEducation and there were discussions aboutclosing the <strong>College</strong>. HCCC then had about3,000 students and owned one building.The <strong>College</strong>’s curriculum was largelyfocused on developmental education andlimited career programs. Dr. Gabertresolved to ensure that the residents of<strong>Hudson</strong> <strong>County</strong> were afforded acomprehensive, student-centered programthat included strong transfer and severalproductive signature programs as well asstate-of-the-art, beautiful places to studyand learn.Today, HCCC offers several courses ofstudy, including the nationally acclaimedCulinary Arts Institute and DevelopmentalEducation programs, a cutting-edgeESL/Bilingual program, Allied Health,Business, Criminal Justice, HospitalityManagement, Homeland Security, theSciences, and Studio Arts/Digital Graphics.Workforce development programs andcooperative alliances with private andgovernmental organizations have also beenforged to prepare area residents foremployment in nursing and other healthfields, and in hospitality management. The<strong>College</strong>’s Center for Business & Industry isthe area leader in developing and deliveringeducational classes and programs forbusinesses, organizations and individuals.In pursuing the <strong>College</strong>’s physicalexpansion, Dr. Gabert also became apioneer in the development of urbancampuses. HCCC now has a dozenbuildings on campuses in Jersey City andUnion City. Two of those buildings are new,from-the-ground-up construction andrecipients of New Jersey Business &Industry Association’s “New GoodNeighbor Awards.” The remainingbuildings are structures — some of whichwere on the brink of condemnation — thathave been repurposed and completelyrenovated. Additionally, a blacktop parkinglot was transformed into a pocket park forthe enjoyment of students, faculty, staff andarea residents. Most of the <strong>College</strong>’sbuildings are LEED-certified and outfittedwith the latest wireless technologies andsafety features. All were completed on-timeand under-budget with little disruption toneighboring residents and businesses.Dr. Gabert has said he does not want to beremembered for the buildings heconstructed, but rather for what goes on in

The studentmay appeal the revocation inwriting and with properdocumentation. However, thenew regulations place responsibilityfor the appeal onthe student, and failure to filean appeal without the requireddocumentation resultsin an automatic loss of aideligibility. When an appeal isgranted, the stu dent must sitwith a counselor and developa remedial academic plan inorder to continue to receiveaid.
