OverviewAs part of a Department of Health funded project, theUniversity of Central Lancashire (UCLan) – working withManchester Metropolitan University – was commissionedby the Royal Society for Public Health (RSPH), to: articulate a model for Healthy Universities whereby thehealthy settings approach is applied within the highereducation sector produce recommendations for the development andoperationalisation of a National Healthy UniversitiesFramework for England to ensure effective co-ordination of initiatives andpropose next steps for progressing the HealthyUniversities agenda.
Model“A Healthy University aspires to create a learning environmentand organisational culture that enhances the health, well-beingand sustainability of its community and enables people toachieve their full potential.”

Recommendations Advocate for cross-government policy commitment to HealthyUniversities that explicitly endorses ‘whole university’ model toensure a seamless and consistent whole system approachacross the spectrum of English education settings. Champion jointly-led National Healthy Universities Programme(incorporating a National Framework that builds on strengthsand experience National Network and Developing Leadershipand Governance for Healthy Universities Project. Develop sector-led multiple level framework, using mainlyprocess-based criteria and a combination of assessmentmechanisms. Explore how resources can be secured to enable a NationalHealthy Universities Programme and Framework to beeffectively developed and operationalised – thereby enablingpotential to be maximised and sustained over time.
