Meaning that they are oblivious toeverything that is happening around them,at any given moment. If it’s true, then I have to wonderwhy and how it happens. Are they justtoo busy to notice the ‘real’ world aroundthem? Maybe, their minds are back atthe work place or maybe, they have theirhands full, just trying to handle their ownproblems.Nobody like a nosey, busy body, but being a concerned neighbor is usuallyappreciated. If you hadn’t been seen in thepast few days, wouldn’t you want someoneto come around checking on you, just tomake sure that you’re alright? Sure youwould!I recently read a news article thathas me questioning, how people can be soabsorbed in their own lives and jobs, notto notice when something around them isobviously wrong? In Warminster, Pa, the bodyTHE BIG SEARCHI am not really ahuge techno guy but I amjust as addicted as anybodyto email, the web, textingand basically anythingMac related. Sherlock Holmes calls thatdeductive reasoning.SEARCH ENGINESSo when I was a kid, an engine was something that made acar or an airplane move around. Today and engine is a search toolthat people all over the world use to find things on the internet. The largest search engine in the world is Google. Untoldnumbers of people go there everyday to find websites on anythingfrom movies, earthquakes or currency conversions to localweather reports and high definition maps of the entire globe. This weeks top 20 Google searches include Black Fridayads, Guy Fawkes day and the shuttle launch. People are searchingand searching more than ever before.A SEARCHING LEGACYAs a Christian, Dad, Pastor and a guy just trying to makeit through life like everybody else, I spend a lot of time thinkingof a 46 year old man was found in hisapartment. This man had died nearly threeyears earlier and was badly decomposed. No one had missed him, no one. Not hisneighbors, not his mailman (who hadstopped delivering his mail long ago),not even the condominium associationpresident, who had ordered the man’s cartowed away for expired registration.Sadly, it was not until a sheriff’sdeputy, who had come to tack up aforeclosure notice on the man’s front door, smelled the terrible odor that emanatedfrom the apartment. Here’s another news story thatdeserves a little thought. In Fairfax, Ohio, little six year old John Carpenter justwalked away from the ’little tots preschool’play ground where he had been playing.John walked across a busy citystreet to go to a children’s resale shop,‘reruns for wee ones’. What had caught hiseye was a bright red large plastic, batterypowered , riding pickup truck. The owner of the store, TrishaTaylor later claimed that she hadCome and Worship With UsSt. Raymond Catholic Church2 nd and Mountain St.P O Box 989Leakey, TX 78873830.232.5852Mass: 5:30pm Saturday8:30 pm 1 st and 3 rd WednesdaysPastor/Administrator:Fr. The deputies returnedJohn to the preschool and the toy truck tothe resale shop, where neither of them hadbeen missed.I have to ask, in a loving, caringsociety, how in the name of God Almighty, can things like this, ‘just happen‘? Isn’tany one watching? Doesn’t any one care? Here’s one last thought for theday, Paul writes in Romans, that the 10commandments can be summed up inone simple, easy to follow rule, “Loveyour neighbor as thy self. Love does noharm to it’s neighbor. Therefore love isthe fulfillment of the law”. Let’s obey thelaw………..about what I am searching for. To me, a big partof living a victorious life in Christ is knowingI must be dedicated to a life of contemplation. There are certain things I have to have adiscipline to think about. Intentional thinkingis a must if I don’t want to wander around likethe mental nomads of our day. Unless Iwant to end up like the buffalo who usedto be seen in this area by the millions, I cantbe a wanderer or a marauder in how I live life. So I crank up thesquirrel cage between my ears and serve God in my thinking.I think that while we are not wanderers we are certainlysearchers. All of us. I also think one of the greatest thingswe as Christians can hand down to the generation behindus is a legacy of searching after the deep things of God.We have to be people whoconstantly seek out the heart of the King.See, Google and search engines change the definition ofsearching to mean that instead of searching, you go to a place thatsearches for you. I think people are being trained today and we needto let our non Christians friends and family know that no one cansearch out God for us. It is the search that qualifies you for the find.So where ever you are at, I am here to tellyou, God himself is searching and He is searching forpeople who are searching for Him. You don’t need anengine, just a heart that is willing to seek after His Heart. And when he had removed him, he raised up unto themDavid to be their king; to whom also he gave their testimony, and said,I have found David the son of Jesse, a man after mine own heart...Acts 13:22“As we express our gratitude, we must never forgetthat the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them.” ~John Fitzgerald KennedyEvening Worship: 6:00pmWednesday Bible Study: 7:00pmFrio Canyon Baptist ChurchHwy 83 SouthLeakey, TX (830) 232-5883Sunday School: 9:45amWorship Service: 11:00amEvening Worship: 6:00pmWed. Page 10 Hill Country Herald November 9, 2011WELCOME TO GRANNY’S KITCHENBACK TO BASICS....NATIVE AMERICAN STYLE by Elaine Padgett CarnegieNovember is Native American Heritage Month and while we are paying tribute to our Native American Veterans, I thought it mightbe fun to try some Native American Recipes also.Alabama Coushatta-I raised my children in Deep East Texas not far from the Alabama Coushatta Indian Reservation. “Indian Tacos”made with Alabama Coushatta Fry Bread was fine cuisine at our house…at least as far as my growing children were concerned!Somewhere I have an old picture of my four boys and my baby girl circled round a high platter of Indian Tacos purchased from theAnnual Alabama Coushatta Pow-Wow. I copied this recipe from the Cherokee Origins Website. The author claimed it was the recipeof Eva Battise, wife of the Alabama-Coushatta Chief. I knew the Chief, but never had the pleasure of meeting his wife. I just knowthe Alabama Coushatta Fry Bread is something you have to experience before you can properly appreciate it! Recipe: Mix 3 Cupsflour, 1/2 t salt, 4 t baking powder, enough water to make a stiff dough. Pinch off small balls of dough, work them into circles about5″ around and fry them in deep fat until golden brown. They are best when served hot and dripping with butter. The Pima Indians used the bounty of the desert. Here is a traditional recipe for Prickly Pear Cactus, in recent years touted as a“health food.“Pima-Papago Cactus and EggsFrom Spirit of the Harvest: North American Indian Cooking (Stewart, Tabori & Chang; September 2011), by Beverly Cox and Martin JacobsRecipe: 2 to 3 5- to 7-inch fresh nopales (prickly pear cactus pads) with thorns removed Salt-4 strips bacon, diced1/2 cup chopped onion1/2 to 1 teaspoon ground New Mexican red chili or chili powder4 to 6 eggs-Ground pepper (optional)Rinse fresh nopales well under cold running water and examine carefully to make sure all tiny thorns have been removed. Trim around the edges with scissors to remove the base of thorns.Use a sharp knife or vegetable peeler to remove a thin layer of peel. Rinse again, cut into thin strips, and simmer in lightly salted water for 5 to 6 minutes, until tender. This is a Comanche Recipe for Fried Corn taught to Linda Ransome by her great grandmother who wasComanche. From the nativetech.org websiteRecipe: 1 large onion(white or yellow), Bacon,(half a pound), Corn(about 8 ears), Salt and black pepper to taste.First you shuck the corn and wash, then cut it with a real sharp knife, you want to skim the top of the kernelsoff. Then scrape the cob to get all the juice out of it. Then you fry the bacon real good, leave the grease in thepot(black pot works best). Cut and sauté the onion in the grease till it is clear Add the corn and the salt and pepper.Simmer over a low heat and stir often so it doesn’t stick. The Sioux used this recipe for Peppermint Tea, a refreshing tea that was also an aid for stomach problems. (I knowit works for colic) From the nativetech.org websiteAbout 1/2 cup dry Peppermint leaves. 3 or 4 cups very hot water.2 or 3 tablespoons of honey. Crush the leaves and preparelike any tea. Strain and add the honey while the mixture isstill hot.Cherokee Nation. Husband of Ketana. Recipe offeredby Ishtacota who learned it from great great grandfatherof Serenety. Tanka-me-a-lo or Buffalo Stew-From thenativetech.org website2 Stalks of celery, cut 1 inch long1 Can stewed tomatoes2 lbs of buffalo stew meat, cut into 1 inch cubes4 Qt water2 lbs of red or white potatoes... (not russets)1 Cup barleyBrown the buffalo cubes on high heat until seared about 3 min. Add 4 quarts of water, potatoes and carrots and boil until Veggies are tender. add stewed tomatoes and celery and barleycook An additional 5 minutes. Remove from fire and place into baking dish. Bake at 425 degrees for 30 minutes. Remove from oven and enjoy. Note: this stew tastes really great, you canuse elk or bear or even rabbit in place of buffalo. No Credit Cards AcceptedCROSSWORD PUZZLEDEF DAWG HAS RESCHEDULED AND WILL BE AT THE BUCKHORN IN JANUARYOR FEBRUARY.SATURDAY NOVEMBER 12THTRENTON CHANDLER BAND (FULL BAND)SATURDAY NOVEMBER 26THMIDNIGHT RYDER AND THEBUCKHORN HOUSE BANDSATURDAY DECEMBER 31STNEW YEAR’S EVE BLOWOUT!!MIKE RYAN BANDDon’t Miss the Incredible Band and PartyGRILL OPEN!! It had been ordered weeks earlierfrom Sears Roebuck and Co. and hadcome all the way from Chicago, Illinois.Along with the gun, was five boxes ofbullets, real bullets. My dad taught me everything that heknew about gun care and gun safety. Thefirst box of shells were shot at targets, all sizes and shapes of targets, from tincans to pictures of animals taken fromold magazines. The first few times, we hunted togetherand he not only taught me the manly artof hunting, he taught me sportsmanship,as well. It wasn’t just about the killingof animals. Mostly, we would eat whatwe killed, but I also learned that it wasok, to kill undesirable things like rats and rattlesnakes, just to make theworld a better place in which to live. One fall morning, after the first hard freeze, me and my dog Skipperwent hunting for cotton-tailed rabbits. I missed the first one, but hit thenext two. It’s not as easy as you might think, when you only have oneshot.I wanted to kill three, as that how many it took to make a good mess. Imean to feed the whole family, that is.At the same time, Skipper and I saw our next candidate run into hollowtree that had fallen down on the ground. Skipper got there first and stuckhis head in barking wildly.I ran to the other end, thinking that the rabbit would come running outand I could shoot it.All of a sudden Skipper let out the most hideous yelp. Continuing to yelpand cry at the top of his lungs, he was rolling all over the ground, then Ismelled the most pungent, stinging odor of my young life. With my eyesSTRANGERS ON A TRAINFour strangers traveled together in thesame compartment of a European train. Twomen and two women faced each other. Onewoman was a very wealthy and sophisticated70 year old lady who was decked out in thefinest of furs and jewelry. Next to her Sat abeautiful young woman, nineteen years old--who looked like something right off the coverof a fashion magazine. Across from the olderlady was a very mature looking man in his midfortieswho was a highly decorated SergeantMajor in the Army.Next to the Sergeant Major satReaction to Snakes• Civilian: Runs awayfrom the snake screaming.• Paratrooper: Lands onand kills the snake.• Armor: runs over snake, giggles, and looks formore snakes.• Infantry: “Look, aputty cat. He wouldget up and do it all over again. With his frontlegs, Skipper kept rubbing his eyes.I knew then, that he had taken that blast rightin the face. What I didn’t know was, that hewas blind and would be for the next two orthree days. Finally exhausted, he just laid there, moaning.I tried to pick him up and carry him, but Icouldn’t, as he weigh almost so much as Idid.Leaving him, I ran to the house as fast as Icould. Luckily, dad was there, first he heardme, then he saw me, then he smelled me. Iquickly explained what had happened andwe jumped into the pickup truck and went and got my best friend andbrought him home.We had a bunch of tomatoes, some about half rotten, dad took them all, smashed and made a sort of tomato juice and gave Skipper a tomato juicebath. It didn’t do a whole lot of good, mostly just turned Skipper from ablond to a redhead. Both Skipper and I receive several baths over the next 24 hours, bakingsoda and lye soap. Baking soda helped get rid of the odor and the lyesoap took a couple layers of skin off. Now, I know that skunk spray is an Sulphuric oil and water just spreadsthe oil around. The best remedy is a mixture of 1 tsp of Dawn dishwashing detergent(to cut the oil) and 1 Qt. of 2% hydrogen peroxide and 1⁄2 cup of bakingsoda, mixed together.By the way, we did eat those rabbits, that night. The young woman, shaking her headand greatly puzzled, asked herself, “Why in theworld would any man in his right mind want tokiss an old fossil like that when I’m sitting here?”The Sergeant Major, rubbing his soreface, was outraged that any woman couldever think that a man in his positionwould try to sneak a kiss in the dark. The private, grinning from ear to ear,was thinking, “What a wonderful worldthis is when a private can kiss the backof his hand and then smack a SergeantMajor in the face and get away with it!”Treaty of 1999.• Navy SEAL: Expendsall ammunition, severalgrenades and calls fornaval gunfire in a failedattempt to kill the snake. The snake bites the SEALthen retreats to safety.• Artillery: Kills snake, but in the process killsseveral hundred civilianswith a massive TOTwith three FA BDEsin support. Here are some simple steps that will help reduce waste, conserve water andenergy, and help you Take Care of Texas during the holiday season.HOLIDAY PARTY GUIDE• When preparing food, compost leftover food scraps (other than meat and dairy).• Place left-over oil and grease in the garbage; never pour them down the drain.• Turn down the heat before guests arrive. You’ll save energy and the extra body heat warms upthe room.• Walk to neighborhood parties or carpool with friends and family.• Use cloth napkins and reusable dishes, glasses, and silverware.• After the party, don’t throw away the leftovers. Put them in reusable containers and send themhome with guests or donate them to a local meal kitchen.SHOPPING AND GIFT GIVING• Plan your shopping in advance. Combining your shopping trips saves fuel and reducesemissions.• Take reusable cloth bags for holiday gift-shopping.• Tell store clerks you don’t need a bag for small or oversized purchases.• Consider the durability of a product before you buy it as a gift. Cheaper, less durable itemsoften wear out quickly, creating waste and costing you money.• Use your own camera instead of a disposable one to reduce waste while capturing holidaymemories. Better yet, buy a digital camera, so that you don’t have to use film at all and onlyprint the pictures you want to keep.WRAPPING PAPER, GIFT BAGS, AND CARDS• Wrap gifts in recycled or reused paper or gift bags.• Remember to save or recycle used wrapping paper and gift bags.• Give gifts that don’t require much packaging, such as concert tickets, gasoline cards, gift cards,or gift certificates.• Send recycled-content greeting cards to reduce the amount of virgin paper used during theholidays.• To reduce paper waste, send electronic greeting cards.BATTERIES AND ELECTRICITY• According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) about 40 percent of all batterysales occur during the holiday season, and many of those batteries end up in landfills. Buyrechargeable batteries to accompany your electronic gifts, and consider giving a battery chargeras well.• Incredibly efficient strings of LED holiday lights are now available at most large retailers. These lights use only 0.04 watts per bulb, one-tenth the energy of standard mini-lights and11/100the energy of C-7, four-watt bulbs-and could save you $30 on your electric bill over theholiday season.• Turn off or unplug holiday lights during the day and when you go to bed, or set all your lightson timers. Doing so will not only save energy, but will also help your lights last longer.• Save energy while you’re away for the holidays by leaving your home thermostat turned down.TREES• The EPA reports that approximately 33 million non-artificial Christmas trees are sold in NorthAmerica every year. After the holidays, look for ways to recycle your tree and use the mulchfor your own yard. Check with your community solid waste department and find out if itcollects and mulches trees.• To help prevent waste created by cutting down and disposing of live trees, consider buying apotted tree and planting it after the holidays.CALL YOUR ORDER IN!!830-232-4771GOOSENECK GRILL448 Hwy. 83 Leakey, TexasCHECK OUT THE AD RATES ATTHE HILL COUNTRY HERALDYOU WILL BE GLAD YOU DID!!Superior Carport Dealer
