The experimental textile artist canmake fabric paints by combining the pigmentswith Jacquard Neopaque Extender (see page25) or Selectasine binder (see page 26).PAPER MAKINGSUNDRIESTitanium DioxideA strong white pigment which makes paperwhiter and more opaque, acting as a filler, andgiving a smoother surface to paper, resulting inless “pick”. The filling effect is much strongerthan with calcium carbonate, although it doesnot neutralise paper acids. The white pigmentcontent is also used to tint coloured pulps, tomake pastels. Use 5-10% to dry weight of fibre.Add to pulp and stir thoroughly.500g £8.15 KTDChina ClayA fine white powder, also known as opalgamma kaolin, which is used to make papermore opaque and smooth and reduceshrinkage. It is especially useful in paper castingand will appeal to paper makers and modelmakers alike. Add during the mixing processusing up to 10g per litre wet pulp, using considerablymore for modelling.500g £7.15 KCHCalcium CarbonateCalcium Carbonate (or chalk) provides an alkalinereserve in paper which promotes acid-freearchival qualities. It retards shrinkage in papercastings and makes for a smoother surface. Inpaper sheets it improves opacity and whiteness.Use 3-4% by weight of dry fibre, or 1%by weight of wet fibre. Add to water and mixfor several minutes. Stir evenly into pulp at thebeginning of the cycle and soak overnight.500g £5.10 KCCCationic Retention AidBinds pigments, dyes and other additives tofibres in the pulp. Make a stock solution of 25gto 1 litre of water in a blender and then diluteto 5 litres. Allow to stand for several hours anduse within 2–3 days. It has a refrigerated shelflife of around 9 months. Add pigment and otheradditives to the pulp, pigment first and then additives.Add the retention aid very slowly whilestirring the pulp until the pigment is retained inthe fibres. If you use too little or too much it willcause the additives to remain separate from thepulp. At this point your water should be fairlyclear if not completely clear.500g £9.20 KCAPaper CraftsDried rose petals in three colours. It ispossible to re-hydrate these petals bysoaking them for a short time in water. This allows you to flatten them withoutcracking the petal, ideal for paper makers.Small sachets, approx. one handful.sachet £2.90 see colours above500g £6.40 KPR3 colour500g £12.50 KPR3 colour*there’s even more online at: www.georgeweil.comSoda AshDissolves out the non-cellulose parts of barkand plant fibres without weakening the finishedpaper. Add 250g to each kg of fibre and boilfor 2-4 hours depending on the fibre.500g £4.60 FD15300Paper SizingAdd to pulp at anytime during the process, tomake paper less absorbent so that ink or paintdoes not run or feather. It improves paper stiffnessand helps protects the fibre from oily mediaas well as dirt and pollution. This alkyl ketenedimer emulsion has a neutral pH and meetsarchival standards. Essential if you are to useyour paper for screen printing or artwork. They can beintermixed, have a soft finish and outstandingwash fastness when fixed with heat. The large quantities of binder and smallerpots of pigment provide a cost effectivesolution for retaining the complete colourspectrum for workshops, schools, collegesand professional businesses. The pigments and binders can also be usedfor block printing, or thinned with water andused for painting or spraying. The fixing andfastening properties are diminished whenwater is added making decorated fabric lesswash fast, we therefore recommend testingon fabrics that will require cleaning. The binders are made wash fast by heatsetting. Once dry, iron on reverse of theprint with a hot iron for 5-10 minutes.1kg of Standard binder will cover approximately2.8 sq.m/30 sq.ft. of print area, butsome fabrics are more absorbent thanothers. The highly concentrated pigmentsshould be used at a rate of up to 50g per kgof binder. In practice, an average of 35g willgive full shade, except for Black, which mayrequire 50g (Luminous Colours should beused at a rate of 80-120g per kg).Selectasine Binder SF20Create screen printing inks for printing onto lightfabrics. The yarn shrinks by 40% on placingin water at 40°C, and dissolves completely at70°C. It can support a low strength warp orweft yarn, stabilise open weaves and createaccurately placed holes. The low temperaturefor dissolving means that even fine woven silkwill not lose lustre. For Shibori techniques, thereis no longer the need many hours of carefulunpicking.
