December 2007Page 17By Hannah DonadioBoth the boys’ and girls’ indoortrack teams have begun preparing for thewinter season and are planning on workinghard in order to make their mark in championships.Last year in Shorelines, bothteams placed second behind powerhousesin the division: Coginchaug on the boys’side and East Hampton on the girls’.This year looks promising for theboys. They are returning many talentedathletes, many of whom had recently becomestate champions after an exceptionallysuccessful cross country season. Andfor the first time in a while, a big group willgive the boys’ team depth as well as quality,which may be the key to coming out onBy Anna BrundageH-K Baseball Coach MarkBrookes was honored at the 31st annualinduction ceremony to the ConnecticutHigh School Coaches Association Hall ofFame. Along with one media member andfive other high school coaches fromaround the state, Coach Brookes was recognizedon Nov. 15 at the Aqua Turf Clubin Southington Connecticut.Mr. Brookes and the other inducteeswere also recognized at the halftime show of a UConn football game onSept. 29.Coach Brookes is the only coachin H-K history to be inducted into the Hallof Fame. Mr. Brookes has taught physicaleducation at H-K since it opened 32 yearsago and was Haddam-Killingworth’steacher of the year in 1990.SPORTSIndoor Track Gears Up for SeasonBoys’ and girls’ track teams during practicetop of the Shoreline Conference.Senior distance runner MikeWaterbury returns after placing third inthe 1,000 meters, second in the one mile,and third in the two mile in Shorelines, aswell as earning fifth place in Class S Championshipslast year. Leading the sprintersthis year is junior Matt O’Brien, whoplaced sixth in the 55 meter dash and secondin the 300 meters in Shorelines lastyear.The boys’ team will be ledby seniors Paul Massicott, WyattHaynosch, Dave Bartolotta, andthrower Derrick Weiss, junior KevinAllison, and sophomores Jason Funaro,Connor Walsh, and Ray Cerino.“The boys’ team is lookingH-K Coaching Legend Honored“I feel very honored to be chosen,”said Coach Brookes.Past awards he has received includefour times winning the MiddlesexBoard of Umpires’ Sportsmanship Award,the Shoreline Conference baseball coach ofthe year for two years, and nine ShorelineConference championships. He was namedCHSCA coach of the year in 2002 and theNHSACA coach of the year finalist in2004.“He’s a smart guy and knows hisstuff,” said junior Chris Bova who held aposition as a sophomore on Brookes’ 2007team.The plaque dedicated to him, andthose of the other coaches, hangs in theHall of Fame located at Rentschler Field inEast Hartford.“If we work hard, wecan have some greatperformances.”good this year,” says Massicott. “Ifwe work hard we can have somegreat performances.”Coach Matt Diglio, who hasrecently been named the ShorelineCoach of the Year, will not just befocusing on the boys, though. A verytalented and experienced group ofgirls are returning to the track thatalso has its eyes on gold medals.“Even though we have a smallgirls’ team,” says senior sprinter AbbyBaecker, “we have some very strong runners,so we should pull out some goodtimes and hopefully some wins.”Top performances at Shorelineslast year included a first place shot-putthrow for current senior Courtney Hannen;fourth place in the 55 meter dash forjunior Siobhan Blancaflor; second place anda school record for senior Gaby Haynoschin the 600 meters; third place for seniorAmy Chamberlain in the two mile as wellas sixth and seventh for sophomores SarahTischbein and Clair Helenek, respectively;and third place in the long jump for seniorHannah Donadio.Both the sprint medley and thefour by two hundred meter relays cameout in fifth place and the four-by-four hundredmeter relay in second, missing All-Conference status by less than half a second.The girls’ team also had a strongshowing in State Championships withfourth place finishes by Haynosch in the600 meters and Hannen in the shot put.The four-by-four hundred meter relaycomposed of returning runners Haynoschand Donadio placed second as well as thesprint medley relay made up of Blancaflor,Donadio, and McManus.The strong core of athletes islooking to do its best this season and makeall of their hard work pay off when itcomes time to capturing some championships.Coach Brookes
