We hope everyone manages to have some timeto relax over the holidays.ERO REPORTEarly in Term 2, BBI was audited by the Education Review Office.Details of the full report will be able to be read online atwww.ero.govt.nz.The report reads extremely well. It positively commends the actionsand outcomes of the board, staff and students. We are pleased toalso state that due to the strong history of the school, its effectivepresent self review process, and strong team leadership, ERO will beexpected to return to BBI in four to five years rather than the regularthree year cycle.STUDENT LED CONFERENCESStudent led conferences will take place on Wednesday 29 July - 1pm -8pm and Thursday 30 July 1pm - 5pm. Reports will go home onMonday of week 2 prior to the interview. A letter will be sent out in thefirst week of next term for parents to book a time to meet with theteacher. School will close at 12 noon on both these days. !Supervisionwill be offered for students until 3.00pm. !SCIENCE FAIR AND MID YEAR REPORTINGThe Science Fair Exhibition will be held from Tuesday 28th July toThursday 30th July in the school hall. This will allow teachers time toincorporate Science Fair assessments into the mid-year reports.Parent / teacher / student conferences are being held on Wednesday29 July and Thursday 30 July. A separate note will be sent out at thestart of term 3 to enable times to be booked. Reports will be sent hometo parents on Monday 31 July.SWINE FLU UPDATEWe have been reiterating health and safety in classes for any virusinfections. !Thank you to those parents who have kept any sick childrenhome. ! We would like to contain the spread of any infections. ! Forthose students who will be travelling overseas during the holidays,especially to Australia or the Americas, please be especially vigilant. !Please keep students home for three days after returning, and if theyshow signs of illness during this time have them checked at the doctorbefore they return to school. !ABSENCE REMINDERIf your child is away for any reason, please phone the office and leavea message and the reason.!This is for student safety as all unexplainedabsence is followed up by the school. !(We prefer not to be informed byemail, as there is no guarantee where the email originated from.)TEACHER ONLY DAY - Monday 24 AugustThere will be a Teacher Only day on Monday24 August. ! The Ministry has been updatingthe school curriculum and schools have twodays that they can take to run professionaldevelopment for all staff. ! We have awonderful opportunity to take all the staff offsite for this. !This is advance notice that theschool will be closed on that date andstudents will not be at school.BBI ENROLMENTS FOR 2010A number of people have been asking aboutenrolling their Year 6 child at BBI for next year.We will be taking both in zone and out of zoneenrolments from the second week of Term 3(Monday 27 July 2009). The closing date forin zone enrolments will be Friday 28th August,out of zone enrolments will be Friday 16thOctober. Should it be necessary, a ballot willbe held on the Friday 23rd October. Theenrolment packs will be sent out to PigeonMountain, Bucklands Beach, Macleans andMellons Bay Primary schools. They will beavailable from the school office, for otherstudents.COLLEGE ENROLMENTS FOR 2010Some colleges ask for the latest school reportwith their enrolment forms. We have informedour local colleges that reports will not beavailable until the end of July. They are happywith this, and in most cases (MacleansCollege) students can bring along the copy oftheir report when they attend their interview.KOREAN VISITORSWe are expecting some students from Korea inour school for 2 weeks. Thank you to all thefamilies who will be homestaying them.FUN RUNA flyer has recently been sent home regardingthe Fun Run series. Do get behind ourstudents for this. It is intended as a family funrun and fundraising event. Individuals andwhole families are welcome to take part. NEWSLETTER PAGE 2STUDENT UNIFORM AND TIMEKEEPINGWe are proud of our school and expect our students to take pride in themselves and their school. !Students should be inthe correct school uniform at all times. ! If students are out of school in uniform, they are representing our school andshould be dressed accordingly. !Please ensure that your child has the correct uniform. !School starts at 8.40am. ! Studentsshould arrive by 8.30am (at the latest) !each morning in order to be ready to begin classes as soon as the bell goes. !Anystudent who arrives after the bell has gone in the morning is to sign in at the office. !AFTER SCHOOL CLASSESMost of the After School classes have now finished for this semester except those classes which needed “makeupclasses”. I do hope that all the students who took part enjoyed their classes. The next semester will begin on Monday20th July (first day of next term). Students will have received a note confirming their enrolment before the end of the termand the class lists will be displayed in the office window.PTA NEWSUniform shop – BBI has a small but dedicated group of mothers running the uniform shop and I would like to take thisopportunity to thank them. Shona Manak, Hilary McKee, Katheryn Tims, Paula Woodhead and Karen Xue share theMonday 8.00 – 8.30am and 3.00 – 3.30pm duties. Thank you ladies. The fundraiser and service to the school team also doa fabulous job. Many thanks to Gwin Ball, Jo Brandli and Yvonne Paitry. A thank you must also go to the PTA secretaryLianne Jago who does a fabulous job recording the minutes at our monthly meetings and helping with events. Our newtreasurer is Andrea Moore and we thank her for taking on that job.Entertainment Books are available through the school at a cost of $65.00. Great savings to be gained at many restaurants,coffee shops and much more.It was a shame to have to cancel the movie premier of Angels and Demons, but due to poor sales the venture could nottake place. Thank you to those parents who bought tickets.Our thanks to the parents who have supported the BBI PTA fundraisers. Money from these events has been donated to theschool to purchase a software program that will assist in teaching students with reading difficulties. SPORTS REPORT PAGE 3SPORTS NEWSBBI#s sport teams have recently been busy trailling, training and competing in many different sports codes.BBI#s Road Race/ Cross CountryThe school road race will be on the afternoon of Tuesday 6 August. All students will be encouraged to participate in thisevent, completing the race to the best of their ability. The course is 2-2.5 km around the vicinity of our school. Furtherdetails will be made available early next term. At this time I will be asking for assistance. If you are interested, please notethe date in your diary.From the beginning of term 3, students will begin training at school in their P.E and sport sessions. We recommend that thestudents wear running shoes for extra comfort, protection and safety.Some students may like to start their personal training over the July holidays. This is a perfect time to start getting fit!Students should start with a short 10-15 minute jog and build up their stamina and fitness slowly over the weeks to reach a30-minute training time.We will be having a cross country event the following week (Wednesday 12 August) for those students who qualify at theschool road event.How will this work?The top 20 students in each age group, to complete the road race, will be invited to participate in BBI#s cross country event,held on the Macleans College Reserve. We will select our best team to compete at the Eastern Zone cross country eventfrom these results. This course#s terrain will be similar to the Eastern Zone conditions.Lunchtime Sport (LTS)Term 2 has been a busy term on the sports calendar. Miss Callaghan will continue the lunchtime sports programme in Term3, focusing on a variety of sport codes and games.Eastern Zone Table TennisAfter a competitive trial, Miss Callaghan selected 8 students to compete at the St Kentigern#s Sport Stadium in Pakurangaon 15th June. The sportsmanship and skill level displayed by the team were a credit to our school during the 117 gamesplayed. The following are the results of the day:Boys Singles - 2nd - Ying Chi BaiGirls Singles - 2nd - Emily ZhengBoys Doubles - 3rd - Alex Pan and Adrial WooGirls Doubles - 2nd - Sarah Hughson and Olivia AthaEastern Zone HockeyThe boys# (11 June) and girls (10 June) teams competed in the Eastern Zone Tournaments that were held at Lloyd ElsmorePark. Both the teams gave it their best $hit#, displaying excellent $sportsmanship#, met new friends and developed new skills.The girls# team played exceptionally well and were FIRST. On the 29th July (term 3), the girl#s team will compete at theInter-zone tournament in Rosedale Park, Albany. Good luck! Congratulations to: Karen Lin, LucasBetts, Matt Wilson and Aiden Stachan who were 2 nd in the mixed teams event and the other team who were 4th. A specialthanks to parents: Mr Betts and Mrs Gleed for transport and managing the teams on the day.After school Water poloA water polo team has been formed again this year, playing on Friday evenings at the Sacred Heart Aquatic Centre. TheBBI student representatives are looking forward to their season. They have played over 3 weeks now. You may like to goalong one evening to support our team. Thank-you to Miss Callaghan (teacher) and Mrs Bowler (parent) for theorganisation of the team.Eastern Zone NetballThe Eastern Zone Netball tournament is being held on 22 July (first week of term 3) at the Auckland Netball Centre, MorrinRoad, Mount Wellington. We are sending two Year 7 and two Year 8 girls# teams. There will also be a Year 7 and two Year8 boys# teams. I know that there are many parents with umpiring and coaching skills in our community.
